Among Us version 17.0.0, released September 9, 2025, added two opposing roles: the crewmate Detective, who records case details and questions players, and the impostor Viper, whose kills leave bodies that dissolve over time. Hosts can adjust Viper’s dissolve speed and the Detective’s interrogation count in advanced role settings in the Dropship.

The release post described the game as having nine roles at the time. That is a contemporaneous count, not a current total.

What the Detective can do
Notes
The Detective can record where a dead crewmate was found, possible suspects, and the type of impostor they believe they are investigating. The notes help organize a case; they do not automatically identify the killer.
Interrogate
The Detective can ask other crewmates where they were when a murder happened. Interrogation applies to one active case at a time, and the host sets the number of available interrogations in the Dropship’s advanced role settings.

In a September 16, 2025 design retrospective, Innersloth said it moved away from early concepts that risked giving the Detective an overly powerful or overloaded suspect-finding tool. The final design instead relies on manually recording the murder location and asking questions, making discussion central and allowing an impostor to challenge a false report. The developers framed the role as a way to make emergency-meeting discussions more engaging, not as a guaranteed way to solve a case.
How Viper’s acid kill works
Viper’s Acid ability kills, after which the body passes through three visual stages: slightly dissolved, very dissolved, and a bone. It then disappears. The body does not vanish immediately in every situation; how quickly it decays depends on the configured dissolve speed and elapsed time.

In a September 23, 2025 design post, Innersloth principal game designer Dave described Viper’s decisions in terms of kill location and timing: a player must consider whether a body has time to dissolve and how others might enter or leave the area. That is design commentary about the role’s tactical choices, not evidence of a particular strategy’s success rate.

What version 17.0.0 changed beyond the roles
The September 9, 2025 update also revised the in-game How to Play guide, made role settings scrollable, reorganized role selection in Practice mode, and included fixes involving tasks, inventory, the wardrobe, and player identification.

Version 17.0.0 is a historical release, not the current version. Innersloth’s news index, crawled in October 2026, lists later releases and says players should update to v17.4.0 to continue playing. That notice does not establish the latest version separately for every platform.

Innersloth published v17.0.1 on October 14, 2025. Its fix list included Detective interface and map issues, selection-menu behavior, and changes to the Detective and Viper role-reveal sound effects. The available update information does not establish whether every issue described as known at the 17.0.0 launch was resolved in later releases.
