amsiext.dll is a McAfee component, not a Windows system DLL. If Windows says amsiext.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair or remove the McAfee installation that owns it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The filename is associated with McAfee Cloud AV ThirdParty Ext. It works alongside Microsoft’s Antimalware Scan Interface, but it is separate from Windows’ own amsi.dll and does not normally belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

What the error messages mean
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because amsiext.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading amsiext.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because amsiext.dll was not found.”
- “amsiext.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Failed to load AMSIExt.dll.”
- “Cannot register AMSIExt.dll.”
The wording gives you a useful clue, but it does not identify the cause by itself.
A missing-file message can mean that:
- McAfee is damaged or only partly updated.
- McAfee was uninstalled incompletely.
- Windows Security quarantined the file.
- A required dependency is missing, even though
AMSIExt.dllis present. - A 32-bit or 64-bit component does not match the program loading it.
- A game, launcher, or startup entry still points to an old McAfee installation.
- The file is in an unexpected location or has been replaced.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall McAfee first
This is the most likely solution when McAfee is still installed or the error began after a McAfee update.
Try McAfee’s own repair or update option
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for McAfee and open the installed McAfee application.
- Look for Settings, Help, Update, Repair, or Reinstall.
- Install any available McAfee update.
- Restart Windows.
- Repeat the action that produced the error.
If McAfee opens normally afterward and the error does not return, the repair worked.
Reinstall McAfee from its official installer
If McAfee does not offer a repair option, or the repair fails:
- Save your work and close McAfee and other applications.
- Open Settings with
Windows+I. - Select Apps and then Installed apps.
- Find the McAfee product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the McAfee product again from McAfee’s official Protection Center, not from a DLL repository.
- Install it and restart once more.
If you use a work, school, or bundled McAfee subscription, sign in through the account or installation portal that supplied it. Installing a different McAfee product may not restore the same component layout.
Check whether the error has disappeared before making further Windows changes.
Fix 2: Remove McAfee completely if you no longer want it
If you intentionally removed McAfee, restoring amsiext.dll may be the wrong objective. The remaining problem may be a startup entry, service, scheduled task, or application reference left behind after an incomplete uninstall.

Do not manually delete random McAfee folders, services, or registry entries. Removing one folder can leave other components in a less repairable state.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
A security product may have quarantined the file, causing McAfee or another application to report it as missing.
In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
AMSIExt.dll. - Inspect the complete path and detection details.
- Compare the path with the McAfee installation folder.
- Check the file’s digital signature before restoring it.
Restore the file only when it is in the expected McAfee directory and has a valid McAfee signature. Microsoft documents quarantine handling and restoration in its guide to restoring quarantined files.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If the detection is unresolved, do not create a broad antivirus exclusion. Reinstalling McAfee is safer because it restores a complete, matching set of files.
Fix 4: Check the path and digital signature
A file named amsiext.dll is not automatically trustworthy.
To inspect it:
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the path shown in the error.
- Right-click
AMSIExt.dlland select Properties. - Select the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signer and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and that the signer is McAfee.
- On the General or Details tab, note the file version and location.
A legitimate installation commonly places the file under a McAfee program directory such as:
C:Program FilesMcAfeeMfeAVAMSIExt.dll
A copy in C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated game directory deserves additional investigation. Scan it with your security software and avoid launching the program that loads it until the file is verified.

Fix 5: Resolve an architecture or mixed-version problem
McAfee installations can contain 32-bit or 64-bit components. A 32-bit DLL is not interchangeable with a 64-bit DLL.
The correct fix is to reinstall the McAfee product so its installer selects the matching files. Do not copy a 32-bit file from one computer into a 64-bit installation, and do not combine files from different McAfee releases.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System and then About.
- Read System type under device specifications.
This does not always tell you whether the affected application is 32-bit. A 32-bit game or launcher can run on 64-bit Windows, so the application, McAfee build, and DLL must still be a compatible set.
Fix 6: Repair the application or game that reports the error
If only one game or application shows the message, McAfee may not be the only relevant installation.
Try these steps:
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Find Repair, Verify files, or Scan and repair.
- Run that function.
- Restart Windows.
- If the error remains, uninstall and reinstall the application from its official installer.
A game crash report may list AMSIExt.dll simply because McAfee’s module was loaded in the process. That does not prove the DLL caused the crash.
If BattlEye or another anti-cheat system blocks the file, update the game, launcher, anti-cheat component, and McAfee. Do not replace the DLL or weaken security controls to bypass the block. If the publisher documents a compatibility issue, follow its supported workaround.
Fix 7: Repair broader Windows corruption
Windows repair tools are relevant when other Windows features are also failing, not just when a McAfee DLL is missing. SFC and DISM normally repair protected Windows components; they do not usually recreate a third-party McAfee file.

Restart Windows after both commands complete and test the affected program.

If you are repeatedly hunting through Windows components and cannot tell which repair changed the system, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for issues and show what it finds; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling McAfee remains the definitive fix for a McAfee-owned DLL.
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart and test again.
Windows Update will not normally supply amsiext.dll, but keeping Windows current can resolve unrelated compatibility problems that make an application fail.
Fix 8: Update related drivers only when evidence points there
A graphics, storage, or security-driver problem can cause a game or application to fail, but it does not make amsiext.dll a Windows driver. Use Device Manager only when the error began with a hardware or driver change:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not uninstall random devices to fix a McAfee DLL error. If the problem is clearly tied to a driver and manually checking many vendors is impractical, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and reinstalling the application that owns the DLL remains the definitive fix.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Use System Restore only as a fallback
System Restore can help if the error began immediately after a software, antivirus, or driver change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Windows+R. - Enter
rstrui.exe. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
System Restore does not guarantee that the correct current McAfee version will return. Repairing or removing McAfee is normally more precise.

What not to do
Do not download amsiext.dll separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an outdated file, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched McAfee build. Copying the file into these folders is especially unsafe:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
It may also hide the real problem, such as a broken McAfee installation or a missing dependency.
Use the official McAfee installer instead.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified reason to manually register AMSIExt.dll.

Running:
regsvr32 AMSIExt.dll
may produce an error saying that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not repair McAfee. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose and syntax in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do not use Windows Features for this file
Turn Windows features on or off manages Windows components such as optional platform features. It does not reinstall McAfee’s AMSIExt.dll. Changing unrelated features can introduce a second problem without addressing the first.
If the error continues
Record these details before contacting McAfee support or the affected application’s support team:
- The complete error message.
- The program, game, launcher, or service displaying it.
- The full path shown in the message.
- Whether McAfee is installed, partly removed, or intentionally uninstalled.
- Your Windows edition and system type.
- The McAfee product and version.
- The DLL’s path, file version, size, and digital-signature result.
- Whether the error appears at startup, login, McAfee launch, or game launch.
- Whether antivirus quarantine lists the file.
This information distinguishes a missing file from a blocked dependency, incompatible architecture, stale McAfee remnant, or suspicious replacement.
FAQ
Is amsiext.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with McAfee. Windows has its own Antimalware Scan Interface components, including amsi.dll, but that does not make amsiext.dll a Windows system DLL.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is amsiext.dll safe?
It is legitimate when it is in the expected McAfee directory and has a valid McAfee digital signature. The filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. Those folders are not the correct general destination for this McAfee component. Reinstall McAfee so the installer places the matching file correctly.
Why does a game or BattlEye mention it?
The game may have loaded McAfee’s module, listed it in a crash report, or blocked it for compatibility or policy reasons. Its presence does not prove that it caused the crash or is malware.
Can SFC restore the file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files. A missing McAfee DLL normally requires McAfee repair or reinstallation.
What if McAfee is already gone?
Complete the uninstall, restart, and use MCPR if remnants remain. A stale startup entry or service may still be requesting the file.
What is the safest fix?
Repair or reinstall the McAfee product from its official installer. If you no longer want McAfee, remove it completely instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
