Whether the RG DDS can run particular 3DS games—and whether it is worth buying—cannot yet be answered from its launch specifications alone: price, release date, software configuration, compatibility, performance and runtime have not been established.
What is the RG DDS, and how does it differ from a 3DS?
The RG DDS is a newly announced two-screen handheld from Anbernic. Its October 10, 2026 announcement describes modern IPS panels and a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip. The Nintendo 3DS is a Nintendo system built around its own software and hardware, with a Game Card slot and a distinctive glasses-free 3D effect on its upper screen.

That makes this a comparison between two different propositions, not a straightforward upgrade. Anbernic’s announcement provides specifications, not independent tests or a complete list of supported games. Anbernic’s RG DDS announcement is the source for the device’s announced specifications; Nintendo’s original Nintendo 3DS specifications describe the original model, not every system in the 3DS family.
How do the screens compare?
On the announced figures, the RG DDS has larger, higher-resolution displays. Anbernic specifies an approximately 4.7-inch upper IPS panel at 1200 × 720 and an approximately 4-inch lower IPS panel at 960 × 720. It lists both at 300 PPI and 500 nits. These are manufacturer-reported specifications, not independently measured results.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Nintendo’s original 3DS specifications list a 3.53-inch upper display at 800 × 240 pixels, with 400 pixels per eye when displaying 3D, and a 3.02-inch lower display at 320 × 240. Anbernic says each RG DDS screen triples the pixel dimensions of the corresponding original 3DS display while preserving its aspect ratio. That scaling comparison is Anbernic’s claim.
Resolution and screen size do not capture the defining difference: the original 3DS’s upper display can present different images to the left and right eyes to create stereoscopic depth. Nintendo says users can adjust the 3D effect or turn it off. The RG DDS announcement describes conventional IPS screens, and launch coverage reports that the device lacks the 3DS-style 3D feature. The RG DDS is not a native stereoscopic replacement. See Nintendo’s explanation of the 3D feature and GamesRadar’s launch coverage.

Can the RG DDS play 3DS games or use 3DS cartridges?
The available launch information does not establish which 3DS games, if any, the RG DDS can run. A Snapdragon chip and two screens are hardware specifications, not proof of software compatibility or playable performance. There is no complete compatibility list or performance result in the cited announcement, so it would be premature to promise that a particular game works.

What do the announced hardware and battery details show?
Anbernic lists a Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip, active cooling and a 6000mAh battery for the RG DDS. Those specifications suggest a more modern hardware profile than the original 3DS, but they do not establish sustained frame rates, game compatibility or battery hours. The announcement does not provide an RG DDS runtime estimate.
Nintendo’s support figures give approximate runtimes for three 3DS-family models. They are estimates, not directly comparable test results against the RG DDS, and Nintendo says actual duration varies with functions, screen brightness, wireless use and temperature.

Consider the RG DDS for sharper announced displays and newer hardware
The RG DDS has the stronger announced figures for screen size and pixel resolution, alongside a modern chip, active cooling and a 6000mAh battery. Those facts may make it appealing if you are interested in a newer dual-screen handheld, but they do not yet show how well it runs games or how long it lasts away from a charger.
Wait for the missing purchase details if compatibility is decisive
Anbernic’s first-look article does not state a price, release date, RAM or storage, operating system, supported software list or RG DDS battery runtime. The launch report also says there is no cartridge slot. If your decision depends on a specific game, cost or real-world battery life, those unknowns make a firm buying recommendation premature. Current pricing and availability for 3DS-family hardware are not established by the cited sources.
