Dual-screen emulators show the handheld’s two displays in layouts such as stacked or side by side, and map host input—such as a finger tap or mouse click—to the emulated touchscreen. Screen placement, render scale, and touch input are separate controls; whether a particular game works depends on its requirements and the emulator, frontend, and platform you use.
How touchscreen controls work
A game that asks you to touch the lower screen needs the emulator to receive both a pointer position and a press or tap. On a compatible touchscreen host, that may be a finger tap. On a computer, it can be a mouse; some setups also support a virtual cursor controlled with a gamepad.

In the Libretro Citra core, the documented mouse mapping uses the cursor as the touchscreen pointer and mouse button 1 as the touch action. Its pointer-device mapping also provides position and pressed inputs. The melonDS DS core documents virtual cursor movement and virtual cursor touch as controller inputs. These are core-specific mappings, not universal controls for every emulator app or frontend. See Libretro’s Citra core documentation and the melonDS DS project documentation.
If touch is not working, check that the frontend has a pointer device assigned and that the game is receiving a press as well as pointer movement. The setting names and calibration options vary, so identify the emulator and frontend before following a menu path. A stylus may make precise taps easier on a compatible touchscreen, but it is optional; supported mouse and virtual-cursor mappings offer alternatives.

How to show both screens and adjust their size
Screen layout controls where the display panels appear in the emulator window. It is different from render scale, which controls how many pixels the emulator renders for the game image. The Libretro Citra core documents four layout choices, while melonDS DS documents additional layout and rotation options.

The exact choices depend on the emulator and frontend. Libretro’s Citra documentation lists top-bottom, single-screen, large-screen/small-screen, and side-by-side layouts; melonDS DS documents rotation and a control for cycling through configured layouts. What resolution scale means
“Resolution” can refer to the handheld’s original pixel output, an emulator’s render-scale multiplier, or the size of the screen panels in the host window. These are not interchangeable. In the Libretro Citra core, the documented “Resolution scale factor” runs from “1x (Native)” through “10x.” That option changes the emulator’s rendering scale; it does not change the game’s original artwork or make the lower screen physically larger in the layout.

A higher render scale can make the rendered image larger or sharper on a high-resolution display, but it is not a compatibility fix and does not guarantee better performance. Higher scales can demand more from the host hardware; the cited documentation does not provide a benchmark for that effect. Adjust layout when you want to change screen placement or relative size, and render scale when you want to change the rendered image resolution.

Why game compatibility varies
Compatibility is title- and setup-specific. A game may depend on features the emulator does not yet implement, input or rendering support exposed by the frontend, or system files that are not included with the emulator. The result can differ between emulator builds, platforms, and frontends.
- Check the exact game: Consult compatibility information for the emulator and version you are using. A compatibility label is not a guarantee that touch, sound, graphics, saves, and performance will all behave perfectly.
- Check required system data: Citra’s archived compatibility page notes that some titles require system files dumped from a 3DS. Its archive disclaimer is dated March 4, 2024, so it is historical context rather than a live guarantee of current development or compatibility. See the archived Citra compatibility list.
- Check platform and frontend support: melonDS DS says its game support follows melonDS subject to missing features, and that available features vary by platform and frontend. See the melonDS DS documentation.
- Test the needed interaction: If a game relies on frequent taps, rotation, or a particular screen layout, confirm those functions work in your specific setup rather than relying on a broad compatibility category.
Nintendo’s guidance about DS and DSi games on 3DS family hardware describes a separate, real-console behavior: those games display at lower resolution than 3DS games, and holding START or SELECT while loading displays them at their original resolution.
