The Anbernic RG34XX is a real Linux-based retro handheld with a shell inspired by the original Game Boy Advance. Its December 16, 2024 release date and introductory pricing were reported before launch rather than officially confirmed by Anbernic at the time. The device has since launched and remains available through Anbernic’s regional stores.
Its main appeal is unusually specific: a 3.4-inch 3:2 display, a GBA-style horizontal design, and enough power for Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, 16-bit consoles, arcade games and PlayStation 1. It is less convincing as a general-purpose 3D handheld because it has no analog sticks, only 1GB of RAM, and variable performance on PSP, Dreamcast and Nintendo DS.

What is the Anbernic RG34XX?
The RG34XX is a conventional horizontal handheld in Anbernic’s budget RG XX family. Its proportions and button layout are deliberately reminiscent of the Game Boy Advance, but it is not a Nintendo product or a licensed GBA replica. “RG34XX” refers broadly to the device’s approximately 3.4-inch screen size, not to an official continuation of Nintendo’s naming system.
Unlike the RG35XX SP, the RG34XX is not a clamshell. It has a fixed, open design and no analog sticks. That makes it a natural fit for 2D games and older systems controlled primarily with a D-pad, while making it a weaker choice for games designed around dual analog input.

This appears to be a change in retail configuration rather than a different core model, but buyers should check the exact option selected at checkout. A larger bundled card also does not automatically mean better or more reliable storage.
Why the screen is the RG34XX’s biggest selling point
The 3.4-inch display uses a 3:2 aspect ratio, which closely matches the native shape of Game Boy Advance games. On a general-purpose 4:3 retro handheld, GBA software normally appears with unused space or requires scaling compromises. The RG34XX’s screen makes that library feel more purpose-built, while still providing enough resolution for older systems.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe 720×480 resolution can work well with integer or near-integer scaling depending on the emulator and selected display mode. Games from 4:3 systems will not fill the panel in the same way as GBA games, and borders or scaling behavior depend on the software configuration.
The horizontal shell should feel familiar to anyone who likes the original GBA layout. The trade-off is that the device lacks analog sticks. That is no serious limitation for Game Boy, NES, SNES, Mega Drive, arcade or most PS1 games, but it matters for titles that expect analog movement or camera control.
Supported systems and realistic performance
Anbernic lists support for ported games, PSP, PlayStation 1, Dreamcast, Nintendo DS, arcade platforms, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Color, Game Boy, Super Famicom/SNES, NES/Famicom, MAME, Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Gear, PC Engine, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Master System, WonderSwan Color and other formats.

That list describes platform capability, not a promise that every game runs perfectly. Performance depends on the emulator, game, settings and operating-system version. The H700 and 1GB of RAM make the RG34XX primarily a classic 2D and early-3D machine:
- Best fit: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Mega Drive, arcade, PC Engine, Neo Geo Pocket, Master System and WonderSwan Color.
- Generally suitable: PlayStation 1, although individual games and settings can still matter.
- Variable: Dreamcast, PSP, Nintendo DS and ports. Some software may be playable, but the manufacturer’s list should not be read as universal full-speed compatibility.
- Not the target use case: demanding modern 3D emulation or games that require analog controls.
Retro Game Corps’ RG34XX coverage examines the display, controls, software, HDMI output, gameplay and internal hardware, making it more useful for judging the device’s practical limits than a platform checklist alone.
Software, storage and setup
The RG34XX uses a 64-bit Linux-based interface rather than Android. That generally keeps the device focused and efficient for emulation, but it also means fewer options for modern apps, storefronts and general-purpose software than an Android handheld.
The two-card arrangement can be useful for separating system files from games. Nevertheless, bundled microSD cards should not automatically be treated as archival-quality media. A sensible first step is to back up the supplied card and consider moving to a reliable branded microSD card, particularly if the device becomes the main home for a large game library. Retro Game Corps’ RG35XX-family guide covers operating-system options, card replacement and practical setup considerations.
Users should add only games they are legally entitled to use, such as homebrew, public-domain software or personal backups where local law permits. Support for a file format does not mean that commercial ROM downloads are supplied, licensed or automatically lawful.

Charging caution
Anbernic lists 5V/1.5A charging and claims C-to-C charging support. Retro Game Corps’ broader RG-family guidance recommends using a simple 5V/1.5A setup and avoiding the assumption that every modern high-power USB-C charger is appropriate. That is practical guidance, not a formal recall or evidence that every RG34XX has the same charging problem.
Connectivity and living-room use
Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 4.2 and HDMI output give the RG34XX more flexibility than a purely offline pocket console. Wi-Fi can support multiplayer features and software functions listed by Anbernic, while Bluetooth and 2.4GHz controller support make the device usable as a basic living-room retro system.
HDMI output is best viewed as a useful extra rather than the reason to buy the device. The RG34XX’s strongest experience remains handheld GBA and classic-console play. A compatible HDMI cable or adapter and an external controller may be required, and the final display behavior depends on the television and software settings.

Reasons to consider it
- The 3:2 screen is a particularly strong match for Game Boy Advance games.
- The GBA-inspired horizontal shape is compact and familiar.
- The H700 platform is well suited to 8-bit, 16-bit, arcade, GBA and PS1 emulation.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI and dual microSD slots add useful flexibility.
- The official regular price remains around the $70 mark before region-specific shipping, taxes and bundle changes.
Reasons to avoid it
- There are no analog sticks.
- Only 1GB of RAM limits its usefulness as a higher-end emulation handheld.
- PSP, Dreamcast and DS performance is game-dependent rather than guaranteed across each library.
- Linux is simpler for emulation but less flexible than Android for broader applications.
- Bundled microSD cards may be less dependable than branded replacements.
- A larger storage bundle can make the final price less attractive than the headline configuration.
- Existing owners of an H700-based RG35XX-family handheld should not expect a major performance upgrade.
How it compares with the main alternatives
The RG34XX SP is the more natural alternative for buyers who specifically want a clamshell, screen protection and sleep-on-close behavior. The RG34XX is better for players who prefer a conventional open handheld and do not need that folding design.

Miyoo-style handhelds can appeal to buyers who value a simple software ecosystem and compact designs, although their hardware, controls and performance profiles differ. Exact comparisons depend on the model.
More powerful Android handhelds are the better direction for demanding PSP, Dreamcast, newer systems and Android applications. They generally cost more and introduce more software complexity, so they are not direct substitutes for the RG34XX’s inexpensive, focused design.
Who should buy the RG34XX?
Choose the RG34XX if your priority is Game Boy Advance, you want a low-cost horizontal handheld, and you prefer physical controls without a clamshell. It is also a sensible fit for classic-console and PS1 libraries, especially if the screen aspect ratio and GBA-inspired shape matter more than maximum emulation range.

In those cases, the RG34XX changes the form factor more than it changes the underlying performance.
Before ordering, check the regional Anbernic product page for the exact currency, color, storage capacity, shipping origin, taxes and delivery charge. The official store pages list variants and prices differently by market, so there is no single universal current price.
Verdict
The Anbernic RG34XX is best understood as a GBA-focused retro handheld, not a miniature all-purpose gaming PC. Its H700 processor, 3:2 720×480 screen and familiar horizontal shell make it a strong proposition for Game Boy Advance and classic 2D libraries. Its missing analog sticks, limited RAM and uneven higher-end emulation keep it from being a serious PSP or Dreamcast specialist.
The original pre-release price information was broadly borne out by the product’s subsequent launch and continued official availability. The important buying details today are the selected storage bundle and regional checkout price—not just the old $64 introductory figure.
