Yes—Cheat Engine now has an official native Linux build. The official download page lists Cheat Engine 7.7.1 for Linux as a ZIP archive. Download it, extract it, make the included executable runnable, and launch it from a terminal. You do not need Wine merely to run the native Linux version.
The correct method depends on the process you want to inspect: use the native build for a native Linux application, use the Proton/Wine method for a Windows game running through Proton, or use ceserver when a Wine-hosted Cheat Engine needs to access Linux processes.

Before you begin
Use Cheat Engine only with software you own or are authorized to analyze—preferably an offline, single-player game, a test program, or educational software. Do not use it to gain an unfair advantage in multiplayer games or to bypass anti-cheat and anti-tamper systems. Cheat Engine’s official FAQ also warns users to respect the target application’s EULA and terms of service.
Back up important save files before changing memory. Successful installation does not guarantee that every process can be opened: permissions, sandboxing, architecture, kernel security settings, compatibility layers, and anti-tamper software can all prevent attachment.

Choose the right method

These are separate setups. Installing the native Linux binary will not automatically make it see a Windows process inside a Proton prefix.
Method 1: Install the official native Linux build
1. Download Cheat Engine 7.7.1
Open the official Cheat Engine downloads page and choose Cheat Engine 7.7.1 for Linux. The direct archive linked by the official page is CheatEngineLinux771.zip.
The Linux release is an archive, not a Debian package, RPM, Flatpak, or Snap. Avoid repacked binaries from unofficial download sites. The official page notes that some antivirus products may incorrectly flag parts of Cheat Engine; that warning does not make arbitrary third-party mirrors or repacks trustworthy.

2. Extract the archive
For example, extract it into a user-owned Applications directory:
mkdir -p "$HOME/Applications/cheat-engine-7.7.1"

cd "$HOME/Applications/cheat-engine-7.7.1"If unzip is not installed, use the package manager for your distribution:
Debian, Ubuntu, or Linux Mint

sudo pacman -S unzipThese commands install the generic archive utility; they are not Cheat Engine packages. The official download does not provide a complete distribution-by-distribution compatibility matrix, so do not assume that every Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, SteamOS, or immutable Linux release is officially supported.
3. Find the Linux executable
Inspect the extracted directory instead of assuming that its layout or filename will never change:
find . -maxdepth 3 -type f -printf '%M %pn'The current archive is commonly associated with an x86-64 executable named cheatengine-x86_64. Use the filename actually present in your archive.
4. Make it executable and launch it
For the commonly used filename:
chmod +x ./cheatengine-x86_64
./cheatengine-x86_64If the name differs, substitute the actual file:
chmod +x ./<actual-linux-executable>
./<actual-linux-executable>The Cheat Engine graphical interface should open. Run it from the terminal the first time so you can see startup diagnostics. A desktop or Qt warning is not necessarily fatal if the interface opens and remains usable.

Do not launch the native GUI with sudo by default. Running it as root can create ownership problems in your home directory and is not a general requirement for installation.
5. Create an optional application-menu shortcut
A local desktop entry lets you launch Cheat Engine without a terminal:

Using the native build with a Linux process
- Start the authorized native Linux application.
- Start Cheat Engine.
- Open the process-selection interface.
- Select the target process and confirm that it appears.
- Only then begin your scan or debugging work.
For scanning concepts, use Cheat Engine’s own tutorial or a small offline test program before troubleshooting a commercial game. Installation alone does not guarantee access. The process may belong to another user, be sandboxed, be protected by kernel settings, use a different architecture, or be guarded by anti-tamper software.
Method 2: Use Cheat Engine with a Proton game
When this method applies
Use the Proton/Wine route when the target is a Windows game running inside Steam Proton. Proton is Valve’s Wine-based compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux; most users should use the Proton version supplied through Steam rather than building Proton themselves. The native Linux Cheat Engine executable and the Windows Cheat Engine executable are not interchangeable in this scenario. A Windows game may be visible only to Cheat Engine running in the corresponding Wine/Proton environment.
Official Proton launch-option method
Cheat Engine’s official Proton instructions use this pattern:
PROTON_REMOTE_DEBUG_CMD="/absolute/path/to/cheatengine.exe" %command%The path must point to the Windows Cheat Engine executable, not the native Linux binary. The documentation’s example uses an older 7.5 path; treat that as historical and replace it with your actual current path.

- Install or extract Cheat Engine in a stable location.
- Start the Proton game once so Steam creates its compatibility prefix.
- In Steam, open the game’s Properties.
- Find Launch Options.
- Add the launch option, replacing the example path:
PROTON_REMOTE_DEBUG_CMD="/home/USERNAME/path/to/cheatengine.exe" %command%- Launch the game.
- Check whether Cheat Engine opens and whether the correct Proton process is listed.
Use an absolute path. Quote paths containing spaces, preserve %command%, and check capitalization. If Cheat Engine crashes, the official documentation says to restart the program.

The official download page also provides CEProtonLauncher.zip, a utility intended to launch Cheat Engine under the appropriate Proton environment. It can be useful when manually rebuilding the launch command is inconvenient. It is not needed for the native Linux build and may not support every third-party launcher or custom Wine setup.
Why a normal Wine prefix often fails
A Cheat Engine installation in ~/.wine is not automatically connected to a game running in a Steam Proton prefix. The game and tool may therefore be using different runners, environments, and process namespaces. For Steam games, use the Proton-specific method. For Lutris, Bottles, Heroic, or another manager, identify that manager’s actual runner and prefix instead of randomly combining system Wine, Proton, and unrelated prefixes.
Method 3: Use ceserver
When to use it
ceserver is useful when Cheat Engine is running through Wine but needs to enumerate or inspect a native Linux process. It provides a Linux-side process server that Cheat Engine can contact over the network interface. It can also support other-host or virtual-machine arrangements, but those require careful authorization and network configuration.
The official download page lists ceserver files for several Cheat Engine versions and architectures. The official README documents building and connecting to the server.

Locate the repository’s ceserver/gcc directory. The exact path depends on how the source was cloned or extracted:
cd /path/to/cheat-engine/Cheat Engine/ceserver/gcc
makeIf that path does not exist, find the directory containing ceserver and then enter its gcc subdirectory.
Run and connect to the server
The official usage instructions start the server with elevated privileges:
sudo ./ceserverThe default listening port is 52736. To select another port:

- Start Cheat Engine through Wine.
- Open its process list.
- Choose the Network tab.
- Enter
localhostin the Host field when both programs run on the same machine. - Connect and select the authorized Linux process.
Changing the port does not fix a permission problem, an incorrect Wine prefix, or a process that is protected for another reason.

“Permission denied” when launching
Make the executable runnable:
chmod +x ./cheatengine-x86_64
./cheatengine-x86_64If the extracted directory is on a noexec filesystem, move it into your home directory or another filesystem that permits execution. Do not use a blanket command such as chmod -R 777.
“No such file or directory” although the file exists
Check the filename, nested extraction directories, architecture, and dynamic libraries:
file ./cheatengine-x86_64
ldd ./cheatengine-x86_64
uname -mfile identifies the binary architecture, while ldd can reveal missing shared libraries. Do not download random DLLs or replace system libraries to make the program start.

Capture terminal output:
./cheatengine-x86_64 2>&1 | tee cheat-engine-startup.logCheck the architecture, required Qt or graphics libraries, whether the archive is intact, and whether your desktop session uses Wayland or X11. Reports on the official forum have included Wayland/Qt window-activation messages; such a message is not automatically a crash if the interface opens normally.
Cheat Engine cannot see the game
- For a native Linux process, try the native build or
ceserver. - For a Proton game, use the Proton launch option or CE Proton Launcher.
- For Lutris, Bottles, Heroic, or another manager, use its actual runner and prefix.
- For a Flatpak game, check whether sandbox permissions prevent process visibility.
Do not assume that changing the port or launching the GUI as root will solve a runner or prefix mismatch.
The wrong process is listed
Proton games can create launchers, helpers, crash handlers, and multiple game processes. Verify the executable name and process ID, select the actual game rather than its launcher, and check whether the game restarted after you selected it. Also account for 32-bit versus 64-bit processes.
The Proton launch option breaks the game
Remove the launch option and start the game normally. Then verify this syntax:

Memory changes immediately revert
This is usually not an installation problem. The value may be recalculated, stored in multiple locations, tied to the wrong process, reset after a process restart, controlled by a server, or protected by anti-tamper behavior. Test the installation with Cheat Engine’s tutorial or a small offline program first.
Alternatives on Linux
ceserver: best suited to exposing Linux processes to a Cheat Engine interface running through Wine.
Pince: a Linux-oriented memory scanner and debugger for users who do not need the Windows Cheat Engine interface. Check its current maintenance and package availability before relying on it.
scanmem and GameConqueror: useful for simpler Linux value scanning, but generally aimed at a narrower workflow than Cheat Engine’s tables, scripting, debugging, and trainer features. Exact differences depend on the current versions and target.
wleeaf/cheat-engine-linux: a community native C++/Qt6 reimplementation. Its README describes it as early and immature, with missing features and bugs. Its benchmark figures are project-reported rather than independent testing, so it should not replace the official build for most readers.

- Choose Cheat Engine 7.7.1 for Linux for a native Linux process.
- Choose Proton launch options or CE Proton Launcher for a Windows game running through Steam Proton.
- Choose

The most important troubleshooting question is not “Which Linux distribution am I using?” but “What kind of process am I trying to access, and which compatibility environment owns it?”

No—not for the official native Linux build. Wine or Proton is relevant when the target itself is a Windows process, or when you specifically need the Windows Cheat Engine executable.
Do I need root privileges?
Not for ordinary installation or launching of the native GUI. The documented ceserver workflow uses sudo because the server may need elevated process access.
Can Windows .CT tables work on Linux?
They may work when the table matches the target process and Cheat Engine environment, but compatibility is not guaranteed. Architecture, addresses, signatures, scripts, and whether the game is native or running through Proton all matter.
Does Cheat Engine work with online games?
Do not use it to gain an unfair advantage online. Anti-cheat systems may detect memory inspection, debugging, injection, or modified processes, and you must follow the game’s EULA and platform rules.
