The official US store listed it at $99.99 when checked, but this dual-screen Android/Linux handheld is best viewed as a Nintendo DS-focused emulator—not an affordable Nintendo 3DS replacement. Some 3DS games may boot, but the RK3568 hardware is generally too limited for comfortable, consistent 3DS play.
What the Anbernic RG DS is
The RG DS is a clamshell emulation handheld with two 4-inch IPS touchscreens, each running at 640×480. It includes stylus support, physical controls, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and an Android 14 installation; Anbernic also provides official 64-bit Linux firmware.

It is not Nintendo hardware and does not provide original cartridge support, Nintendo eShop access, cameras, glasses-free 3D, or every feature of a DS or 3DS. Its appeal is more specific: it gives emulated Nintendo DS games a physical two-screen layout instead of squeezing both displays onto one handheld screen.
Anbernic lists the device’s specifications on its official technical page.

Price and availability
Anbernic’s official US storefront listed the RG DS at a $99.99 sale price when checked. That is a listed product price, not a guaranteed delivered cost: shipping, tax, currency conversion, region, storage bundle, and promotions can change the final amount.
The base specification includes 32GB of internal storage, while some configurations may include a larger microSD card. Check the exact variant before ordering. Buying directly from Anbernic may also involve different delivery times, return procedures, and warranty support than buying from a local reseller. Start with the official RG DS product page rather than assuming that every $99.99 listing has the same storage or shipping terms.

The important specification is not simply the number of systems Anbernic advertises. The RK3568 is a modest platform: suitable for older 2D consoles and DS emulation, but with limited headroom for demanding 3D systems. Much of the RG DS’s cost and size goes toward its dual-screen design rather than high-end processing power.
How good is Nintendo DS emulation?
Nintendo DS is the RG DS’s strongest use case. Two physical screens make menus, maps, inventory panels, and other DS interfaces substantially more natural than a single-screen layout. Capacitive touch input and the included stylus are also useful for games built around drawing, tapping, or dragging.

Android’s DraStic-based setup has generally received better performance reports than the early Linux implementation. Review coverage describes DS play as comfortable overall, although that should not be read as a guarantee that every title, accessory feature, or control scheme will work perfectly.
Games that depend heavily on precise touch input may need calibration or mapping. Microphone, camera, local wireless, cartridge, and unusual peripheral features may require workarounds or may not translate fully to emulation. Use legally obtained game files and backups where permitted by local law; bundled ROM collections should not be assumed to be licensed.
Older systems are a bonus, not the whole story
Anbernic advertises support for systems including Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, Master System, PC Engine, arcade platforms, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, PSP, and Saturn.

That list describes available emulators, not uniform library-wide performance. Game Boy, GBA, NES, SNES, and other older 2D systems are a sensible fit. N64, Dreamcast, Saturn, and PSP performance becomes increasingly dependent on the individual game, emulator, resolution, and settings. The most accurate description is that the RG DS is primarily a DS and older-retro machine, with some higher-end systems working on a title-by-title basis.

Why the RG DS is a poor 3DS buy
A dual-screen clamshell can look like a 3DS, but the physical resemblance says little about emulation performance. Nintendo 3DS emulation is considerably more demanding than ordinary DS emulation, particularly in games with complex 3D scenes and effects.
The RG DS’s RK3568 processor, Mali-G52 GPU, and 3GB of RAM leave limited room for that workload. One reported Citra test of Story of Seasons: A New Beginning reached roughly 15–25 frames per second at 1× resolution, with visible slowdowns in busy scenes. That is one test result, not a universal benchmark: emulator builds, drivers, settings, and individual games can change the outcome.
Some 3DS software may launch through Android emulators such as Citra or Lime3DS. But “boots” is not the same as “plays well.” Buyers should not expect smooth Mario Kart 7, Pokémon X/Y, Monster Hunter, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, or similar 3D titles across the board.

Android versus Linux
Android
Android is the more flexible choice. It offers easier access to Android applications, emulators, front ends, and experimentation with Citra or Lime3DS. It can also make the RG DS useful for tasks beyond retro emulation. The trade-off is a less appliance-like experience, with more manual setup and configuration.
Official Linux
Anbernic’s official Linux firmware version 1.0 was released in May 2026, according to firmware coverage. It provides a more traditional game-console interface, with DS games using DraStic and other systems running through RetroArch.
Linux is not automatically the better option. Reports describe a less polished interface, inconsistent cover scraping, limited scaling options, weaker performance in some tests, and problems such as audio, shutdown, touch, or control mapping issues in early firmware testing. It may suit readers who want a simpler front end, while Android remains preferable for flexibility and generally stronger DS results.
If you change operating systems, back up the microSD card and verify that the firmware image is specifically for the RG DS. Do not flash a generic RK3566 or RK3568 image: similar chip families do not make firmware interchangeable, and an incorrect image can create recovery problems.

Battery life and physical compromises
Anbernic claims about six hours from the 4,000mAh battery. Independent reports have varied from roughly four to six hours depending on the game, screen brightness, Wi-Fi use, operating system, and whether both displays are active.
At approximately 490g, the RG DS is heavy compared with many conventional budget handhelds. The two-screen hinge layout is its main advantage, but it also makes the device larger and less pocket-friendly. Reviews have reported slow charging, noticeable warmth, and faster-than-expected idle drain. Turning off the upper screen can reduce power use for single-screen applications. These are review observations rather than standardized laboratory measurements.
Who should buy the RG DS?
- Buy it if Nintendo DS is your main target and a genuine two-screen layout matters.
- Buy it if you want a new clamshell device with stylus input for around $100.
- Buy it if you are comfortable configuring Android emulators, organizing your own legally obtained game files, and adjusting controls.
- Skip it if 3DS is the main reason you are shopping.
- Skip it if you want GameCube, PlayStation 2, or modern Android performance.
- Skip it if you need original Nintendo features, physical cartridges, cameras, native wireless functions, or a light pocketable system.
Alternatives worth considering
An original Nintendo DS or DSi remains the more authentic choice for native DS cartridges and hardware behavior. Used units bring their own risks, including aging batteries, worn hinges, damaged screens, and condition-dependent pricing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAn original or modified Nintendo 3DS is a better fit for authentic 3DS software, cameras, StreetPass-era features, and the stereoscopic display. It is secondhand hardware, however, and availability and condition vary.
For demanding 3DS emulation, a substantially more powerful Android handheld is the more sensible direction. Such devices may offer better performance, but they can cost more and usually will not reproduce the RG DS’s compact physical dual-screen experience. The choice is therefore between DS ergonomics and greater emulation power, not simply between two similarly shaped handhelds.
Verdict
The Anbernic RG DS is a real, available sub-$100 handheld with a distinctive purpose. Its dual touchscreens, clamshell design, and stylus make it unusually appealing for Nintendo DS emulation. Android offers the broadest flexibility, while Linux provides an alternative console-style interface with notable early compromises.
But the device should not be treated as a cheap 3DS. The hardware can launch some 3DS software, yet reported performance is often too slow or inconsistent for comfortable play. Buy the RG DS for DS and older retro systems; choose original Nintendo hardware for native features or a more powerful handheld for serious 3DS emulation.
