To run an Ancient Kingdoms 3 server, match one client release with its corresponding serverfiles.zip, use Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, and run it on a 64-bit Java 17 installation. Extract the server files into a clean directory, install Forge there if the archive requires it, accept the EULA, then start the generated run.bat or run.sh. Every player must use the same pack release, Minecraft version, and Forge loader.

What Ancient Kingdoms 3 uses

Ancient Kingdoms 3 is a medieval-themed modpack by chickon98. Its premise is kingdom building, magic progression and hero-style exploration. CurseForge identifies the current compatibility target as Minecraft 1.20.1 running on Forge. The stable release listed for September 9, 2026 is Ancient Kingdoms 3-stable-1.11.4.zip; the project page reported 260,832 downloads in 2026.

Choose and preserve a matched release

Start with one client release

Write down the complete client-pack filename, its Minecraft version and its Forge version before creating a server. Do not let a launcher silently update the client while you are preparing the server. A server built for one pack revision can fail when clients bring newer or older mod jars, configuration files or scripts.

Download the corresponding server archive

CurseForge publishes serverfiles.zip releases for Ancient Kingdoms 3 on Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge. The project’s listed server archives are approximately 798.16 MB and 799.92 MB. Those sizes demonstrate that multiple server archives exist; they are not interchangeable labels. Select the archive associated with the exact client release you recorded.

Keep the client pack and dedicated server archive together as a release pair. Preserve the manifest, overrides, configuration files and mod versions supplied with that pair. Do not upload a normal client instance blindly: client-only files can create startup errors, and omitting server overrides can produce a world that behaves differently from the intended pack.

Create a clean server directory

Use a new directory dedicated to this server rather than mixing it with another Forge installation. A clean location makes it easier to identify which files belong to Ancient Kingdoms 3, replace a damaged installation and restore a backup. Extract the selected serverfiles.zip into that directory without renaming individual mods or configuration files.

Self-hosted installation, step by step

  1. Record the release. Note the exact Ancient Kingdoms 3 client filename, Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge version shown for that release.
  2. Obtain the matching archive. Download the corresponding serverfiles.zip from the Ancient Kingdoms 3 CurseForge project. Check that the archive belongs to the same release rather than choosing only by a similar file size.
  3. Extract into the server directory. Unzip the archive into the empty directory you created. Keep the supplied manifest, overrides, configuration and mod files together.
  4. Install Java. Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. Forge 1.20.1 documentation identifies both the Java version and 64-bit JVM requirement; a 32-bit runtime is not an equivalent substitute.
  5. Install Forge when required. If the archive does not already contain the needed Forge installation, download the installer for the matching Minecraft/Forge pair. Run it, choose Install server, and select the Ancient Kingdoms 3 server directory. Forge’s support documentation describes this installer workflow.
  6. Use the generated launch files. Forge generates run.bat for Windows and run.sh for Linux or macOS. These scripts are the intended launch entry points and work with the generated JVM argument file.
  7. Complete first startup. Start the appropriate script once. When the server creates eula.txt and stops, review the agreement, change the EULA setting to accept it, save the file, and launch the script again.
  8. Set memory in the right place. Adjust the values in user_jvm_args.txt, or use the equivalent memory controls supplied by your hosting panel. Avoid editing generated command lines when the installation expects arguments in this file, because updates can overwrite manual changes elsewhere.
  9. Let the world finish initializing. The first launch can perform mod discovery and world-generation work. Wait for a clean server-ready state before asking players to connect, and watch the console for missing dependencies or repeated errors.
  10. Test with a matching client. Install the same Ancient Kingdoms 3 release, Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge loader on a test client. Connect locally or through the server’s configured address and port before sharing access with a larger group.
  11. Publish connection details. Give players the server address and configured port. Tell them to use the identical pack release; changing only the launcher profile or adding an extra mod can make the handshake fail.

Java and Forge details that commonly decide success

Why Java 17 matters

Forge’s 1.20.1 documentation specifies Java 17 on a 64-bit JVM. If the server reports an unsupported class version, exits immediately or appears to use a different Java installation than the one you installed, check which runtime the launch script or hosting panel is actually calling. Point the service at the 64-bit Java 17 executable instead of assuming the operating system’s default Java is correct.

Use the installer’s server option

The Forge installer has separate installation modes. Selecting Install server and targeting the dedicated directory creates the libraries, loader files and launch scripts needed by a headless server. Installing Forge only into a client profile does not prepare that directory for server use.

Keep generated files intact

The generated scripts and user_jvm_args.txt are designed to work together. Keep them with the Forge installation, and make a backup before changing JVM arguments. If an update regenerates a script, recheck the argument file rather than copying an old command line that may reference obsolete libraries.

How much RAM to assign

There is no universal pack minimum

Archive size and mod count do not provide a reliable RAM prescription. Memory demand changes with concurrent players, exploration, world-generation activity and the particular server software configuration. Begin conservatively, then observe garbage-collection pauses, server tick time, player count and the load caused by new-world generation.

Increase the allocation only when monitoring shows memory pressure or instability and the machine has physical RAM to spare for the operating system and other services. Giving Java every available gigabyte can make the host less responsive and does not automatically improve tick performance.

The hosted starting figure

PLAYNHOST’s Ancient Kingdoms 3 page recommends starting at 6 GB of RAM for its hosted deployment. That is the provider’s starting guidance, not a universal minimum for self-hosting or for every player count. Treat it as an initial panel setting, then validate the server under the actual number of players and the world-generation workload you expect.

What to monitor

  • Garbage-collection pauses that coincide with freezes or delayed block and entity updates.
  • Server tick time while players are exploring or generating new terrain.
  • Concurrent player count and whether lag begins only after a particular group size.
  • World-generation load during a fresh map compared with an established area.
  • Repeated out-of-memory, allocation or mod-initialization errors in the console.

Self-hosting versus a managed panel

Both approaches can run the same Forge pack, but they transfer different responsibilities. Self-hosting gives you direct access to files and JVM arguments; a managed panel trades some low-level control for guided installation and provider-operated infrastructure.

Decision axis Self-hosted server Managed hosting
Cost pattern Uses your own hardware, electricity and network; expenses are primarily upfront or ongoing infrastructure costs you already carry. Uses a recurring hosting plan; verify current price, resource limits and renewal terms with the provider.
Files and JVM flags Full control over the server directory, backups, Forge files and user_jvm_args.txt. Control depends on the panel; some settings are exposed while provider-managed layers remain abstracted.
Installing the matched pack You download, extract and maintain the correct serverfiles.zip yourself. The panel may provide a CurseForge search and version selector that installs the pack for you.
Latency Depends on the location and upload quality of your own machine and network. Depends on the provider’s available region and the distance to your players.
Support and monitoring You diagnose Java, Forge, mod and network failures. The provider may supply panel monitoring and support, subject to its service scope.
Scaling You add hardware or move the installation when player count and world size grow. You can usually change the plan, subject to the provider’s available resources and limits.
Operations You are responsible for firewalling, backups, updates and recovery. Some infrastructure tasks may be included, but confirm exactly what is backed up and who performs recovery.

Installing through PLAYNHOST

Its documented panel flow is: order a server, open the Modpacks tab, choose CurseForge, search for Ancient Kingdoms 3, select the desired version and install it. Confirm that the panel selected the same release your players will install, and review the resulting Java and memory settings before starting the instance.

Using VeryGames as another lead

VeryGames advertises Ancient Kingdoms 3 with a control-panel installation flow. Treat that page as a provider option rather than proof of a particular price, RAM allocation, uptime level or support package. Check those terms directly before ordering, and verify that the panel exposes the exact pack release and server files you intend to use.

Connecting players without version conflicts

Give every player a short compatibility checklist:

  • Ancient Kingdoms 3 is the same release on the client and server.
  • Minecraft is 1.20.1.
  • The Forge loader matches the release.
  • No extra client mod, replacement configuration or manually updated jar has been introduced.
  • The address and configured port are entered exactly as provided by the administrator.

A mismatch can appear as a failed handshake, missing-mod message, rejected registry entry or a disconnect during login. The fastest diagnosis is to compare the complete pack filename and loader version before changing server files.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The server exits before creating a world

  • Confirm that the launch process is using 64-bit Java 17.
  • Verify that Forge was installed with Install server into this directory, not a different folder.
  • Check that the selected server archive belongs to the same client release.
  • Read the first meaningful error in the console rather than the final shutdown line; a missing library or incompatible mod often appears earlier.

The EULA file keeps reappearing

Stop the server, edit the generated eula.txt as required by the agreement, save it in the server directory and launch the same generated script again. Editing a similarly named file in another directory has no effect.

Players cannot join, but the server is running

  • Test locally with a client that has the exact pack, Minecraft and Forge versions.
  • Check the address and configured port supplied to players.
  • Review the host firewall and router rules if the service is self-hosted; managed providers may expose these controls in their panel.
  • Compare the client’s mod and configuration set with the matched release instead of copying random files from another installation.

Players disconnect during exploration

Watch tick time, garbage-collection pauses and world-generation load while reproducing the problem. If the issue occurs only when several players generate new terrain, reduce simultaneous exploration or increase memory within the machine’s safe capacity, then test again. Do not infer the required allocation from the ZIP file’s size alone.

An update broke an otherwise working world

Stop the server and restore the last known-good server directory and world backup. Keep the old client release available for rollback, and never overwrite a working installation before verifying that the new client archive, server archive and Forge version are a matched set.

Backups, updates and recovery

Back up before changes

Stop the server cleanly before copying its world and configuration data. Keep at least one backup outside the live directory so a failed update, disk problem or accidental deletion does not destroy both the active world and its recovery copy. Record which Ancient Kingdoms 3 release and Forge version produced each backup.

Stage an update

  1. Choose the new client release and obtain its matching serverfiles.zip.
  2. Copy the current server directory and world to a separate backup location.
  3. Install the new files in a fresh directory instead of overwriting the working one.
  4. Apply only deliberate configuration changes, preserving the new release’s manifest, overrides and mod versions.
  5. Start the new server with Java 17, accept any newly generated EULA file as required, and test with a matching client.
  6. Keep the old directory until players have confirmed that the world loads and essential gameplay systems work.

Plan for responsibility boundaries

With self-hosting, firewall rules, backups, updates and recovery are yours. With a provider, read the backup schedule, retention, restore procedure, monitoring coverage and support limits; a panel’s presence does not by itself guarantee that your world can be recovered after a failed update.
