WordPress Multisite lets one WordPress installation run several separate websites. The sites share WordPress core files, and can share themes and plugins, while each site keeps its own content in separate database tables. A shared user table and network-level administration make it useful for related sites that need common governance, but those same connections create a larger blast radius for configuration changes, upgrades and failures.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Use Multisite when a group of sites should be managed centrally and can follow common code and operational rules. Use separate WordPress installations when sites need independent release schedules, strong isolation, or extensive data interconnection.

What WordPress Multisite actually is
A Multisite network is a collection of WordPress sites that all use the same installation core files. Instead of maintaining a complete WordPress codebase for every site, an administrator maintains one installation and creates multiple sites inside it.
Each site still behaves as a distinct website for publishing. Its posts, pages and other site content are stored in that site’s own database tables. The sites do not automatically share content with one another. WordPress also maintains a shared user table for the network, so one user account can exist across sites, but that account needs a role assignment on each site before the user can work there.

The arrangement is therefore neither a single site with several visual skins nor a set of completely isolated installations. It is a network: content is separated by site, while core infrastructure, user records and much of the operational governance are shared.
What is shared
- WordPress core files are shared by every site in the network.
- The network can provide common themes and plugins.
- User records are held in shared tables.
- Network administrators control network-wide settings and installation-level resources.
What remains separate
- Each site has its own content tables and publishing area.
- A site does not automatically see another site’s posts, pages or other content.
- User access is assigned per site, even though the account record is shared.
This distinction matters when planning integrations. A network can centralize administration without creating a shared content database. If your project depends on sites constantly exchanging records, Multisite does not provide that interconnection by default.

Related regional websites
Multisite is well suited to an organization that publishes several regional versions of a common site. A business might operate country or language sites with different local content while keeping a common set of themes, plugins and technical policies. The same pattern can work for a game publisher with distinct regional editorial sites, provided each region can operate within the network’s shared infrastructure.
Departmental or organizational sites
Departments, campuses, branches or teams can each have a site while a central group maintains the WordPress installation. Local editors receive roles on their own site, and the network administrator handles the common platform. This avoids repeating the same core, theme and plugin maintenance for every department.
A portfolio of sites with common technical governance
Choose Multisite when the sites should use a coordinated set of approved themes and plugins. Installing a component once at network level can make it available to the individual sites, subject to the network’s activation and permission rules. Central governance is valuable when consistency and predictable maintenance matter more than complete local autonomy.

Projects that can tolerate shared operational decisions
Every site in a network is affected by decisions made at network level. If the owners agree that common upgrades, security policies and server configuration are acceptable, the administrative savings can outweigh the coupling. Make that agreement explicit before creating the network rather than discovering it during the first major upgrade.
When Multisite is the wrong choice
Sites need strong data interconnection
WordPress’s guidance cautions against Multisite when sites are strongly interconnected or need to share data or users in a way that the network does not provide by default. Shared user tables do not turn separate site content into one common application database. If the primary requirement is a unified catalogue, shared records or tightly coupled workflows, evaluate a single site with suitable plugins or another architecture instead.
Sites require independent release schedules
A network shares core infrastructure and commonly managed extensions. That makes it difficult for one site to follow a completely different upgrade timetable from the others. Separate installations are a better fit when one site must remain on a different release, use a different plugin version or undergo a change without exposing the rest of the group.
Isolation is a hard requirement
Network-level permissions and configuration create a shared blast radius. A mistake in a network-wide setting, an incompatible extension or a failed upgrade can affect multiple sites. If each site must be operationally isolated, including its administration and maintenance decisions, independent installations provide a clearer boundary.
The only difference is presentation
Do not create a Multisite network merely because several pages need different designs or permissions. A single WordPress site with appropriate plugins may solve a presentation or access-control requirement without introducing network configuration, DNS and migration complexity.

Subdirectories, subdomains and mapped domains
When you create a network, choose how its sites will be addressed. The two native URL models are path-based (subdirectories) and domain-based (subdomains). A site can also be reached through another domain using domain mapping.
| URL model | Example | Infrastructure implications |
|---|---|---|
| Path-based network | example.com/site1 |
Depends on working pretty permalinks and correct rewrite rules. |
| Domain-based network | site1.example.com |
Requires DNS and web-server mapping, commonly wildcard subdomains or virtual hosts. |
Path-based networks
Each site appears as a path below the main domain. This can simplify DNS because the sites use the same host name, but the web server must correctly rewrite those paths to WordPress. Pretty permalinks must work before you rely on this model; a broken rewrite configuration can make the network’s URLs fail even when WordPress itself is installed correctly.
Domain-based networks
Each site uses a subdomain, such as site1.example.com, or another host name configured in the server. DNS must direct those host names to the installation, and the web server must know how to serve them. Wildcard subdomains or explicit virtual-host mappings are common ways to implement this model.
Using a separate domain for a site
Since WordPress 4.5, domain mapping is native. The documented process is to point the chosen domain in DNS, install an SSL certificate for it, and then enter the mapped URL in Network Admin. Older WordPress versions required a domain-mapping plugin, so confirm the version of any legacy network before planning the work.

- You have administrator control of the existing WordPress installation.
- You can edit
wp-config.phpand the relevant server files. - Pretty permalinks already work reliably.
- Your web server can apply the required rewrite rules.
- For Apache deployments,
mod_rewriteand suitable.htaccesssupport are available. Other servers need their equivalent rewrite configuration. - You have a tested backup of the existing site and database before conversion.
Also decide whether the network will use paths or subdomains, who will be the network administrators, and which sites are allowed to activate common themes and plugins. These decisions affect DNS, permissions and day-to-day support.
How to plan and create a network
- Confirm the architecture. List the sites, their owners, their URL model and any data they must share. Reject Multisite if the list depends on strong cross-site data coupling or strict operational independence.
- Back up the existing installation. Keep a restorable copy of the files and database before changing configuration. A Multisite move or rollback is more complicated than moving a single site.
- Verify server prerequisites. Test pretty permalinks and confirm the required rewrite support. On Apache, check
mod_rewriteand.htaccesshandling; on another server, configure the equivalent rules. - Choose the URL structure. Select subdirectories if the sites should live under one host name and your rewrite setup supports them. Select subdomains if each site should have its own host name and you can provide the necessary DNS and server mappings.
- Enable the network in the existing installation. Use your administrator access to make the required changes to
wp-config.phpand the server configuration. Apply the rewrite rules WordPress requires for the selected URL model. - Create sites and assign access. Add each site to the network, then assign users a role on the specific site where they will publish or administer content. Being present in the shared user table does not, by itself, grant site access.
- Govern themes and plugins centrally. Install common extensions at network level and activate them for individual sites according to your policy. Document which components are mandatory, optional or prohibited.
- Configure mapped domains when needed. For a site using its own domain, point that domain in DNS, install its SSL certificate, and enter the mapped URL in Network Admin.
- Test every site and URL. Check login roles, permalinks, front-end pages, media and mapped domains before inviting editors to publish. Test a representative upgrade and backup restoration procedure as part of the launch plan.
How administration works after launch
Network administrators
Network administrators manage the network as a whole. They control installation-level resources and the common operating rules that individual site administrators cannot override. This role should be limited to people responsible for the platform, because a network-level change can affect every site.
Site-level users and roles
The shared user table makes account management reusable, but permissions remain site-specific. Give an editor access on the particular regional, departmental or project site they maintain. Remove that site role when responsibilities change; deleting or retaining the shared account is a separate network decision.
Themes and plugins
The network can make themes and plugins available centrally and then permit activation for selected sites. This is efficient for common functionality, but it also means a compatibility decision may have consequences beyond one site. Maintain a written inventory of shared extensions and test changes against all affected sites.

| Decision axis | Multisite network | Separate installations |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | Central network administration for multiple sites. | Each installation is administered independently. |
| Code and extensions | Core files are shared; themes and plugins can be governed centrally. | Each installation can maintain its own core, theme and plugin choices. |
| Content | Each site stores content in separate tables and does not share it by default. | Each installation has its own database and content boundary. |
| Users and permissions | User records are shared, with roles assigned per site. | Accounts and roles are managed within each installation unless an external system connects them. |
| URL flexibility | Uses subdirectories, subdomains or mapped domains, with corresponding DNS and rewrite requirements. | Each installation can use its own domain and server arrangement. |
| Release independence | Common infrastructure couples sites to network-level upgrades and configuration. | Sites can follow independent release schedules. |
| Failure and upgrade impact | A network-wide problem can affect multiple sites. | An issue is normally confined to the affected installation. |
| Migration | Moving the network is more complicated than moving a single site. | A single-site move is the simpler baseline. |
The practical choice is centralization versus independence. Multisite reduces duplicated platform administration when the sites are related. Separate installations cost more to govern collectively but provide clearer boundaries for releases, configuration and recovery.

A decision checklist
Choose Multisite when most answers below are yes:
- Are the sites related by organization, region, department or purpose?
- Will a central team administer the WordPress installation?
- Can the sites share core files and a governed set of themes and plugins?
- Can every site accept common operational decisions and upgrade windows?
- Are you prepared to configure DNS, SSL and rewrite rules for the chosen URL model?
- Can you maintain network-level backups and a migration plan?
Choose separate installations when any of these are decisive:
- Sites require strong data sharing that is not provided by default.
- Each site needs an independent release schedule or plugin governance.
- A network-wide configuration or upgrade must not affect other sites.
- The sites are unrelated and gain little from centralized administration.
- You need a simpler migration and recovery boundary for each site.
Common planning mistakes
Confusing shared users with shared content
A user can exist once in the network and receive roles on several sites, but posts and pages remain site-specific. Plan explicit integration if editors or applications must move data between sites.

Path-based networks depend on permalinks and rewrites; domain-based networks depend on DNS and server mappings. Treat those as launch prerequisites, not troubleshooting tasks after the sites are live.
Underestimating the shared blast radius
Central administration is the benefit and the risk. Test themes, plugins and upgrades across the network, and define who can approve network-level changes.
Converting without a recovery plan
Back up before conversion and document how you would restore the original installation. WordPress explicitly notes that moving Multisite is more complicated than moving a single site, so migration should be planned before the network grows.
