Android 5.0 Lollipop included a playable Easter egg built around the same tap-to-fly obstacle formula as Flappy Bird. You guided Android’s Bugdroid through gaps between lollipop-shaped obstacles, but it was a hidden system mini-game—not the original Flappy Bird app and not an officially identified licensed version.
What the Lollipop Easter egg was
The Easter egg had two stages. Repeatedly tapping the Android-version entry in Settings revealed a Lollipop graphic. Tapping that graphic could change its colors or advance the screen; pressing and holding the logo then opened the game.
Inside the game, Bugdroid moved automatically. Each tap lifted it upward, while pauses between taps let it fall. The objective was to pass through the openings between vertically arranged lollipop obstacles. Hitting an obstacle ended the run and required a restart. Contemporary coverage described the mechanics as deliberately close to Flappy Bird.Ars Technica
How it compares with Flappy Bird
| Original Flappy Bird | Android Lollipop Easter egg |
|---|---|
| Bird | Android Bugdroid |
| Green pipes | Lollipop-shaped obstacles |
| Standalone mobile-game app | Hidden feature in the Android system |
| Title associated with Dong Nguyen | Android/Lollipop-themed presentation |
| Tap or repeatedly tap to control vertical movement | Tap or repeatedly tap to control vertical movement |
| Failure on collision and progress through obstacle gaps | Failure on collision and progress through obstacle gaps |
That shared control loop—automatic forward motion, tap-driven vertical movement, narrow gaps, collision failure and score progression—is why “Flappy Bird-style clone” is accurate. Calling it the Flappy Bird game is not: the Android feature used different characters, art, branding and distribution.

How to launch it on Android 5.0
- Open Settings.
- Open About phone, About tablet or a similarly named About-device page.
- Find Android version. Do not use Build number; that entry is associated with Developer options.
- Tap Android version repeatedly until the Lollipop logo appears. Guides sometimes gave a fixed count, but repeated tapping until the graphic appears is more reliable across builds.
- Tap the Lollipop graphic if necessary to reach its interactive screen.
- Press and hold the logo’s head or main body. The playable mini-game should open.
Once it starts, tap to make Bugdroid rise and release between taps so it descends through the openings. A collision ends that attempt.

Does it work on Android 6.0 or newer?
Not as the same Lollipop game. Android 6.0 Marshmallow kept the idea of a hidden obstacle game but replaced lollipops with marshmallows and added a related multiplayer feature. Later Android releases used different Easter eggs altogether.Android Authority A phone running Android 10 through Android 16 therefore should not be expected to reveal this game by tapping its Android-version entry.

Why people call it a clone
Android Easter eggs were already a release tradition, and Lollipop turned its branding into a playable joke. Flappy Bird was a widely recognizable, famously difficult mobile-game reference in 2014, making its tap-and-dodge structure easy to recognize. The available reporting establishes the resemblance and the Android-themed substitutions; it does not establish a particular developer’s private motivation, licensing arrangement or legal conclusion.

If the game does not appear
- Verify that the device is actually running Android 5.0-era software, not a later version with a different Easter egg.
- Use the Android version entry, not Build number.
- Tap repeatedly until the Lollipop graphic appears; one tap normally is not enough.
- Long-press the logo. Tapping it alone may only change its color or advance the first stage.
- Check alternate labels such as About device or About tablet.
- Allow for manufacturer customization or a vendor build that changed or omitted the standard screen.

The Bottom Line
It is fair to call Android 5.0 Lollipop’s hidden game a Flappy Bird clone or Flappy Bird-style homage. It copied the recognizable tap-to-fly obstacle mechanic, substituted Bugdroid and lollipops, and lived inside Android rather than shipping as the original game.
