Happy Home Paradise is worth considering if you enjoy designing themed homes and spaces and want a repeatable creative activity alongside Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It is a weaker fit if you want a broad new adventure or don’t enjoy decorating. The decision mainly comes down to whether its design-focused play appeals to you and whether you want access tied to a subscription or a separate purchase.
What Happy Home Paradise adds
The DLC sends you to an archipelago where you design vacation homes for clients. You can also decorate island facilities, work on gardens and exteriors, and earn and spend Poki on furniture. Nintendo says design techniques and items you redeem can carry over to your main island. Nintendo’s overview of Happy Home Paradise describes these activities.
Vacation-home designs use a built-in furnishing inventory, so you are not restricted to the items, DIY recipes, or resources in your own inventory. Compatible amiibo cards and figures can invite characters, but they are optional and sold separately.
How much it costs and how access works
Nintendo Support’s U.S. FAQ lists the standalone DLC at US$24.99. Nintendo also includes access at no additional cost with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. That access lasts only while the membership is active; a separately purchased copy can be played indefinitely. The US price is not a global price, so check your local Nintendo eShop for regional pricing. Nintendo Support’s Happy Home Paradise and Version 2.0.0 FAQ explains the purchase and subscription options.

#1 Best Overall
- Brand New in box. The product ships with all relevant accessories
The full Animal Crossing: New Horizons game is required. Nintendo says some features become available only after you make certain progress in the game. DLC save data is stored on the console, and you can continue from that data if you restore membership or purchase the DLC separately. Some items and content already unlocked may remain usable on your main island while DLC access is suspended.
| Access route | What you pay | How long access lasts | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone DLC | US$24.99 in Nintendo Support’s U.S. FAQ; check your local eShop for regional pricing | Indefinite access | You want to return to the archipelago without relying on an active membership |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack | No additional DLC charge while the membership is active; membership price depends on the plan and region | Only while membership is active | You already have access through the membership and are comfortable with that limit |
Who is likely to enjoy it?
Consider it if you like design prompts
The core activity is creating spaces to suit themes and clients, including homes, gardens, exteriors, and facilities. If you enjoy experimenting with layouts and furniture, the DLC offers a separate place to keep doing that. This recommendation is based on Nintendo’s description of the activities, not on measured player satisfaction or a personal playtime test.

Defer it if you want a broad new adventure
Nintendo’s feature descriptions center on designing and furnishing spaces. They do not establish that the DLC adds the kind of broad adventure some buyers may expect, so it is a poor match if that is your main reason to buy.
Choose a purchase route that matches how you play
- Already have Expansion Pack access? If you are happy for access to end with your membership, you can try the DLC through that membership before deciding whether to buy it separately.
- Want to keep returning after a membership ends? The standalone purchase is the route for lasting access to the archipelago.
- Compare your actual costs. Weigh the U.S. standalone price—or your local eShop price—against your existing membership and how long you expect to play. Membership prices and regional DLC prices vary, so there is no universal cost-saving claim.
What carries back to your main island?
Nintendo says you can bring design techniques and redeemed items back to your main island. It also says certain items and content already unlocked can remain usable there if DLC access is suspended. These carryover benefits may matter if you want the design activity to influence your home island, but they do not change the fact that archipelago access through a membership ends when the membership does.

Do you need amiibo?
No. Compatible amiibo cards and figures provide an option for inviting characters, but they are sold separately and are not required to use the DLC.
