Once your friendship is high enough, they may give you their framed photo directly or send it by mail. It is a chance-based reward, not one tied to a guaranteed number of days or gifts.
How to earn a villager’s framed photo
- Talk to the villager regularly. Speaking to them once a day is one way to build friendship, according to Nintendo Life’s guide.
- Give appropriate gifts when the game allows it. The guide recommends wrapping gifts for an additional positive effect. Avoid trash and gifts likely to harm the relationship.
- Complete requests successfully and send letters. Villagers may reply to letters, which can also help build friendship.
- Continue after the relationship is strong. The photo may come in person or by letter, and it is not guaranteed on the first eligible gift or interaction.
The game does not show a friendship meter, and the cited sources do not establish a guaranteed timetable or number of gifts. Nintendo Life describes the framed photo as something a player eventually receives by reaching maximum friendship; that is guidance from the publication, not a statement from Nintendo.

What counts as an eligible gift?
The community-maintained Animal Crossing: New Horizons FAQ at Bell Tree Forums reports that gifts need a sell-back value of at least 750 Bells and that, once the friendship requirement is met, the photo chance is 6–10%. These are secondary-source gameplay figures, not an official Nintendo guarantee. The practical takeaway is to give suitable gifts and keep building the relationship rather than relying on a particular gift count or a promised drop rate.
Framed photo, poster, and Photopia picture are different
A villager’s framed photo is a furniture item earned through the friendship system. It is not a screenshot or a portrait made at Photopia. Nintendo Support explains that amiibo can invite a character to the Photopia photo studio, but that feature is separate from earning a villager’s framed photo: Nintendo Support’s amiibo and Photopia instructions.

The Bell Tree Forums FAQ reports that in version 2.0.4, a player must speak to the villager for 10 days after receiving the first photo before a duplicate may be given. This is a community-reported, version-specific rule, not a detail corroborated by Nintendo. Treat it as tentative rather than a definitive description of how every current game version handles duplicates.
