EA shut down the game’s servers on January 12, 2026, and keeping the game installed would not have preserved access: Anthem requires those servers and has no offline mode.
Can you still play Anthem?
No—not through the official game service. EA described Anthem as an online-only title and said it would no longer be playable once its servers went offline. Post-shutdown coverage reported that the servers went offline on January 12, 2026.

EA’s FAQ put the reason plainly: “Anthem was designed as an online-only title so once the servers go offline, the game will no longer be playable.” The statement is from the BioWare Team on EA’s Anthem update page. The shutdown has now happened.
Would keeping Anthem installed have let you keep playing?
No. The installed files are not a substitute for the online service Anthem requires. An installed copy and a newly installed copy face the same barrier after shutdown: the official servers are unavailable. Reinstalling the game cannot restore them.

Can you reinstall Anthem if you bought it?
EA said in its July 3, 2025 announcement that people who had previously purchased Anthem could download it from their digital library and play until January 12, 2026. That was a time-limited assurance, and the play period has ended. EA’s announcement does not establish whether a particular account, platform, or region still displays a download option, so library availability may vary and should not be mistaken for access to playable servers.
What happened to EA Play access?
EA announced that Anthem would be removed from the EA Play playlist on August 15, 2025. That date has passed, as has the January 12, 2026 server shutdown. EA’s announcement also contains one FAQ answer referring to January 13, 2026 for spending remaining premium currency; its stated sunset date is January 12, which post-shutdown reporting identifies as the day service ended.

Are there unofficial ways to play?
The official shutdown establishes that ordinary official play is unavailable. It does not establish whether unofficial servers, fan modifications, or preservation projects currently work, or whether they are safe or lawful. No verified workaround is established here.
