Antihero vs. Villain Protagonists: How Games Make Players Root for Them

Games can align players with morally compromised protagonists through shared goals, direct control, and perspective shifts. Sympathy, identification, and approval are not the same.

Games can draw you toward a morally compromised protagonist by aligning your actions with their immediate goals, keeping you in control, and revealing motives that complicate your first judgment. That can invite sympathy without making you identify with the character—or approve of what they do.

What is the difference between an antihero and a villain protagonist?

An antihero is a central protagonist who lacks conventional heroic virtues. A villain protagonist is a central viewpoint character whose goals or conduct put them in opposition to the moral or social order the work presents. These are useful working definitions, not fixed categories: a character’s label can change with the viewpoint and with what the player knows.

The distinction is not simply whether a character does bad things. An antihero might be selfish, ruthless, or deeply flawed while still pursuing a goal the story frames as defensible. A villain protagonist’s aims or actions may instead place them in direct conflict with the values the story foregrounds. Either way, being the playable lead does not make someone a conventional hero.

Keep three reactions separate: sympathy means understanding or feeling for a character; identification means feeling aligned with or represented by them; moral approval means judging their choices as right. A game can encourage the first while complicating the second and withholding the third.

Why do players root for a villain in a game?

Games can align the player with a character before the player has settled what to think of them. When the immediate goal is shared—survive this encounter, reach the next objective, protect someone—the player’s attention is on completing the task. A larger moral judgment may come later.

Control makes actions feel personal

Unlike a film, a game can ask the player to perform the protagonist’s actions directly. Analysis of Spec Ops: The Line connects that control, the impulse to keep an avatar alive, and a sense of responsibility for events. Performing an action can make it feel more personally compromising than watching it happen, though players will not all experience it the same way.

Motives can make a character legible without excusing them

Access to a protagonist’s experiences, relationships, and reasons can make their behavior easier to understand. That does not settle whether the behavior is justified. The useful distinction is between “I understand why this character did it” and “I think this character was right.”

Another viewpoint can change the frame

A game can give substantial control to someone first framed as an opponent. That shift exposes the character’s perspective directly rather than asking the player to infer it from a distance. It can invite empathy, but it cannot guarantee sympathy or approval.

How Spec Ops: The Line turns control into complicity

The 2012 shooter uses familiar military-shooter expectations as part of its setup, then challenges the player’s heroic assumptions through disturbing actions, constrained choices, and consequences. Its design team described an intention to make gameplay and combat contribute to character and story, not leave that work only to cutscenes and dialogue. Narrative designer Richard Pearsey made that aim explicit in his 2012 development account; lead designer Cory Davis also discussed putting players in control during scenes that other games might present as cutscenes.

Those comments describe design intent, not proof that every player reacted as intended. The game’s force comes partly from the gap between the familiar role of the heroic soldier and what the player is asked to do while inhabiting that role. Henrik Andergard’s analysis treats the game as a deliberate subversion of the military-hero narrative.

Choice is not the same as control over outcomes

Lead writer Walt Williams argued that the larger narrative continues toward chaos despite some major explicit choices. In an Ars Technica interview, he rejected the idea that a game must validate a player’s preferred “good guy” role to provide agency:

“The concept we currently have of player agency [in most video games] is that since I’m the player and I’m the hero and this world revolves around me, it has to react however I want it to react.”

That tension matters: choosing among actions does not necessarily mean being able to make the world produce a preferred outcome. A 2024 study by Wright and Denisova discusses the game’s “stop sign” framing as a meta-choice: the ethical question can shift from what the playable character chooses to whether the person playing will continue. A constrained or ambiguous choice can therefore make responsibility part of the experience even when the player cannot rewrite the story.

How The Last of Us Part II asks players to reconsider an antagonist

The Last of Us Part II takes a different route. After Abby is introduced as an antagonist to Ellie and kills Joel, the game shifts from Ellie’s perspective to Abby’s for a substantial section. Ferrari and Soraci’s 2022 analysis describes this as an attempt to create empathy for a character initially presented as a villain. Director Neil Druckmann discussed the game’s story and Ellie’s development in a 2019 PlayStation Blog interview.

A perspective shift can make an opponent’s motives and relationships more immediate, but an empathy-seeking structure is not proof that the audience will empathize. Ferrari and Soraci examined six highly viewed commented gameplay videos; in five of them, the observed players expressed dissent with the climactic attempt to make them harm Ellie. That is a finding about six selected videos, not a representative estimate of player opinion. The available studies do not establish a broad cross-game statistic for how often players root for villain protagonists.

What to look for when a game wants your allegiance

These questions help distinguish a game’s invitation from the response it can actually guarantee:

Design axis Question to ask
Player control Do you directly perform the protagonist’s actions, or mainly observe them?
Choice structure Are moral choices explicit, constrained, ambiguous, or implied by continuing to play?
Consequences Does the game show who is harmed and how, or leave the consequences abstract?
Viewpoint Does the story stay with one protagonist, or grant substantial control of an opposing character?
Player refusal Can you choose a different outcome, refuse an action, or stop? What does the limit communicate?
Moral framing Does the story endorse the protagonist, criticize them, or leave room for conflicting readings?

These axes describe different ways a game can shape allegiance; none, by itself, proves how a particular player will respond. The studies of control and complicity in Spec Ops: The Line, the viewpoint shift in The Last of Us Part II, and the 2024 analysis of meta-choice offer examples of how those design questions matter.
