On Debian and Ubuntu, Apache2 logs normally live in /var/log/apache2/. The usual secure file setting is ownership root:adm with mode 0640. To inspect a protected log without changing its permissions, use a permitted, read-only command such as sudo less /var/log/apache2/error.log. Start with error.log when diagnosing a failure, then check access.log to confirm which requests reached the server.

Where Apache2 keeps its logs
Debian- and Ubuntu-based systems conventionally place Apache2 logs in /var/log/apache2/. Two files are central:

These are defaults, not guarantees. Apache chooses the paths through the ErrorLog and CustomLog directives. Virtual hosts can define their own files, and a local administrator can use a different directory or filename. If a file is missing from /var/log/apache2/, discover the active configuration instead of creating a replacement file or changing permissions on the directory.
What permissions should Apache2 logs have?
Debian security guidance documents the usual ownership and mode for Apache log files as root:adm and 0640. In symbolic form, mode 0640 gives the owner read and write permission, the group read permission, and everyone else no permission. With the customary ownership, root can read and modify the file, members of the adm group can read it, and users outside those classes normally cannot.

| Property | Usual value | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Owner | root |
The privileged account owns the file. |
| Group | adm |
Approved system administrators may receive read access through group membership. |
| Mode | 0640 |
Owner can read and write; group can read; other users have no permissions. |
Check the live machine rather than assuming those values. Log rotation, virtual-host configuration, package updates, access-control lists, and local policy can change ownership or mode. The directory and each rotated file also need to be checked separately.
Check the directory and files without opening their contents
- Inspect the directory itself:
sudo ls -ld /var/log/apache2This shows the directory’s mode, owner, group, and timestamps.
- Inspect the files beneath it:
sudo ls -l /var/log/apache2Look for the owner, group, mode, and whether a file has been compressed or renamed by rotation.
The sudo prefix is useful here because it elevates only the requested listing operation under the account’s sudoers policy. It does not permanently change your identity or the log permissions.
Find the configured access and error-log paths
Before reading a default filename, inspect the enabled virtual-host files and search for the directives that set logging:
ErrorLogselects the error-log name and location.CustomLogselects the access-log name and location.
On a conventional Debian or Ubuntu installation, enabled virtual hosts are commonly maintained under the Apache configuration tree’s enabled-sites directory. Use the configuration files that are actually enabled on your host, and search for both directive names. The result may show one global log, a per-site log, an absolute path elsewhere, or a relative path resolved by Apache’s configuration.
Do not infer that a virtual host is logging to /var/log/apache2/access.log merely because that file exists. A request can be written to a site-specific file while the default file remains quiet. Conversely, an error may be recorded in the global error log even when access logging is split by site.

Read Apache2 logs with sudo
sudo runs an allowed command as root, or as another account permitted by sudoers. Depending on policy, it may ask you to authenticate or reject the command entirely. For routine investigation, use viewers and filters that do not modify the file.
| Command | Use it when | What it does |
|---|---|---|
sudo less /var/log/apache2/error.log |
You need to inspect a large file interactively. | Opens a scrollable, read-only view. Search within less, then press q to exit. |
sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/apache2/error.log |
You need the latest 100 lines. | Prints a bounded recent section and returns to the shell. |
sudo tail -f /var/log/apache2/error.log |
You are reproducing a live problem. | Follows new entries as Apache writes them. Stop with Ctrl-C. |
sudo cat /var/log/apache2/access.log |
The file is small and you need all of it in standard output. | Prints the complete file; it can overwhelm a terminal for an active server. |
Use the exact path discovered from the configuration if it differs from the defaults. You can also filter a specific file rather than dumping it:
sudo grep -n "pattern" /var/log/apache2/error.log
Replace pattern with a meaningful term from the failure you are investigating. Filtering a single file limits exposure and makes the result easier to audit than copying every log to a temporary, broadly readable location.
Why start with error.log?
Apache HTTP Server documentation calls the server error log “the most important log file.” It records what went wrong and often contains the clue needed to repair the configuration, permissions, module, upstream connection, or request-handling problem. Start there when a site returns an error, fails to start, or behaves unexpectedly.
Use access.log as the request-side record. It can confirm whether a browser or client reached Apache, which URL was requested, and whether traffic is arriving at all. Reading the two files together separates an application or upstream problem from a request-routing problem: an access entry proves a request reached the logging layer, while a nearby error entry may explain how Apache handled it.

Reading logs when sudo is not available
The normal root:adm and 0640 arrangement can allow an approved administrator to read logs through group access without invoking sudo. Whether that works depends on the host’s group membership, access-control lists, and local policy.
- If your account is an approved member of
adm, group read permission may be sufficient. - If you are not in that group, a regular read usually fails with “Permission denied.”
- Membership and ACL behavior are host-specific; do not assume that every Debian or Ubuntu account has the same access.
Do not copy a log into a home directory merely to bypass a denied read. That can expose client addresses, URLs, credentials accidentally included in requests, and other operational data. Request the least privilege needed: a narrowly scoped sudo rule, approved group membership, or an administrator-provided excerpt.
Choosing an access method
The practical choices differ in privilege scope, auditability, operational safety, and portability.
| Approach | Privilege scope | Auditability | Operational safety | Portability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
One read command with sudo |
Single command; no lasting permission change. | Subject to the host’s sudo policy and logging. | High when using less, tail, or a targeted filter. |
Works wherever sudo and the configured path are available. |
Membership in adm |
Ongoing read access to files granted to that group. | Governed by group administration and host policy rather than each command. | Convenient, but access remains available after the immediate incident. | Typical of Debian/Ubuntu defaults; not universal on custom layouts. |
| Reading a custom log path | Depends on the owner, group, ACL, and mode of that path. | Depends on the access mechanism used. | Safe only when the path and file permissions are verified. | Most portable because it follows Apache’s actual configuration, not a distro default. |
| Editing or changing permissions to read | Changes persistent access or file state. | Creates a configuration change that must be tracked separately. | Riskier than a read-only viewer and usually unnecessary. | Can conflict with package defaults and log rotation. |
For a one-time investigation, a read-only sudo command is usually the narrowest option. For a team that routinely handles server incidents, approved adm membership may be more convenient, but it should be granted deliberately.

A safe permission-and-reading workflow
- Locate the real files. Inspect enabled virtual-host configuration and identify every
ErrorLogandCustomLogpath relevant to the site. - Inspect metadata first. Run
sudo ls -ld /var/log/apache2andsudo ls -l /var/log/apache2, or use the corresponding custom directory. Confirm that the file exists and note ownership, group, mode, and rotation suffixes. - Start with the error log. Use
sudo lessfor a broad review orsudo tail -n 100for the current incident. - Reproduce and follow. If the failure is intermittent, run
sudo tail -fon the relevant error log while reproducing it. Stop the follower withCtrl-C. - Confirm request arrival. Check the matching access log, using a targeted
sudo grepor a recenttailrather than printing an unbounded file. - Preserve the configured security model. Do not make the directory world-writable, assign it to the web-service account, or loosen modes simply because one user cannot read it.
Troubleshooting common failures
The default file does not exist
Check ErrorLog and CustomLog in the enabled virtual-host configuration. A custom path, a per-site filename, or a rotated and compressed file may explain the absence. Reading the wrong path with more privilege will not reveal the relevant event.

sudo asks for a password or rejects the command
Authentication prompts and command denials are controlled by sudoers policy. A rejected command is an authorization issue, not proof that the log is damaged. Ask an administrator for an approved read rule or use an authorized adm group account; do not work around policy by changing file ownership.
The file exists but the read is denied
Verify the file’s mode, owner, and group with sudo ls -l. Check whether your account has the approved group access and whether an ACL or parent-directory permission blocks traversal. A directory that is readable but not searchable, or a rotated file with different ownership, can produce a denial even when the main file looks correct.
tail -f stops showing new entries after rotation
Log rotation can move, compress, and expire files. A process following the old inode may continue watching a file that Apache no longer writes. After external rotation, Apache must be signaled to reopen its logs. The documented pattern is apachectl graceful, or an equivalent systemctl reload action in the rotation procedure’s postrotate step. Use the service-management command appropriate to the host and then follow the newly opened file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPermissions change again after rotation
Rotation creates or renames files according to its own rules, so the mode and ownership of the current file may differ from an older one. Recheck the live directory and rotated files after the rotation event. Correct the rotation policy or package configuration rather than repeatedly applying a manual chmod that will be lost at the next cycle.
Security rules for Apache log directories
Log files contain operational and potentially identifying information. More importantly, Apache warns that anyone able to write to the log directory may be able to obtain the user ID that started Apache, normally root. Directory write access is therefore a privilege boundary, not a convenience setting.

- Keep directory ownership and write permissions restricted to trusted administrators.
- Protect Apache’s
ServerRootfiles and parent directories from non-root modification. - Prefer read-only viewers and narrowly scoped filters for investigations.
- Do not make
/var/log/apache2/world-writable. - Do not change ownership to the web-service account just to solve a read error.
- Do not assume a mode copied from one host is correct for another; verify the running system and its rotation policy.
A permission fix that lets an analyst read a file but grants an attacker the ability to write the directory is not a fix. Preserve the separation between the account that runs Apache, the account that owns protected configuration, and the accounts that receive read-only diagnostic access.
How rotation affects what you see
Rotation prevents an active log from growing without limit by moving old files, compressing them, and expiring older copies. Consequently, yesterday’s entry may be in a suffixed or compressed file while the current access.log or error.log contains only newer events. The directory listing is the quickest way to see this history, but each file still needs its own permission check.
External rotation must be coordinated with Apache. Once a file is moved, Apache needs a graceful reopen or an equivalent service reload so new messages go to the intended current file. If that reopen step is missing, administrators may inspect an apparently quiet file while Apache is still holding an older descriptor.
Practical examples
Diagnosing a site that returns a server error
- Locate the site’s
ErrorLogdirective. - Run
sudo tail -n 100against that exact file. - Reproduce the failing request.
- Run
sudo tail -fwhile reproducing it again and note the new diagnostic entry. - Check the corresponding
CustomLogfile to verify the request and compare timestamps.
Checking whether traffic reaches Apache
- Identify the relevant
CustomLogpath. - Use
sudo tail -n 100or a targetedsudo grepfor the request. - If no access entry appears, inspect routing, the listener, or an upstream component before changing Apache log permissions.
- If an access entry appears, inspect the nearby error-log entries for Apache-side diagnostics.
Granting temporary administrative access
Use the existing sudoers and group-governance process to grant the smallest necessary read capability. A one-command sudo rule limits scope to the incident; adm membership provides continuing read access and should be treated as a durable privilege. In either case, retain the normal restricted ownership and mode on the logs and directory.
