1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe practical way to self-host imgproxy is to run the official Docker image on a Linux VPS, keep its HTTP port private, and put a TLS-terminating reverse proxy in front of it. Start with the project’s Docker quick start, then add signed URLs, a source allowlist, SSRF protections, resource limits, and monitoring before exposing the service to applications or the public internet.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
This setup gives your applications an on-demand image transformation endpoint without sending source images through a third-party service. The trade-off is operational responsibility: you choose the VPS, pay its hosting and bandwidth costs, maintain the container, and measure capacity for your own transformations.

What imgproxy does in a self-hosted architecture
imgproxy is a standalone HTTP server. Your application creates a specially crafted URL containing a source image URL and processing options. imgproxy fetches the source, applies those options, and returns the transformed image for use in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, APIs, or downstream storage.
The request path normally looks like this:
- A browser or application requests an image URL from your public hostname.
- A reverse proxy terminates HTTPS and forwards the request over a private Docker network or to a loopback-bound port.
- imgproxy validates the URL signature and policy, fetches an allowed source, transforms it, and streams the result back.
- Your reverse proxy returns the response to the client and can apply its own access, timeout, and caching policy.
The official project describes Docker as the easiest and recommended way to run imgproxy. A VPS is sufficient for many deployments, but capacity depends on source-image size, transformations, output formats, concurrency, and network conditions.

Prerequisites and a safe topology
VPS requirements
- A supported Linux distribution with Docker Engine installed and permission to run containers.
- A DNS name pointing to the VPS.
- A reverse proxy or gateway that can terminate TLS certificates.
- Firewall rules allowing only the ports you actually publish, normally HTTPS and administrative SSH.
- A plan for logs, updates, monitoring, and outbound bandwidth.
The official material does not specify a universal minimum RAM, CPU count, or guaranteed throughput. Treat the VPS size as a measurement decision rather than a fixed recommendation.
Keep imgproxy off the public interface
The default service bind is :8080. Do not publish that port broadly once the container is in production. Either place the reverse proxy and imgproxy on the same dedicated Docker network and publish no host port for imgproxy, or bind the host port to loopback only:
docker network create imgproxy-net
docker run --name imgproxy --network imgproxy-net --restart unless-stopped -p 127.0.0.1:8080:8080 ghcr.io/imgproxy/imgproxy:latest
When the reverse proxy runs in Docker, it can reach the container by its network name without exposing port 8080 on the VPS. When the reverse proxy runs directly on the host, the loopback binding means only local processes can reach imgproxy.
Separate public and private responsibilities
Let the reverse proxy own the public DNS name, certificate issuance and renewal, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, client timeouts, and any edge rate limiting. Let imgproxy own image fetching and transformation. This separation makes it harder for a client to bypass TLS policy or reach an unprotected administration path.
Run the official image for a first test
The project’s quick-start command exposes the service on port 8080:
- Pull the image from GitHub Container Registry:
docker pull ghcr.io/imgproxy/imgproxy:latest
- Start a test container:
docker run -p 8080:8080 -it ghcr.io/imgproxy/imgproxy:latest
At this point imgproxy is listening on port 8080. Use this mode only to verify that Docker can start the service and that your application can reach it. It is intentionally missing the production controls discussed below, and the -it foreground invocation is not a durable service arrangement.
Convert the test into a production container
Pin what you deploy
Use the :latest tag for the initial smoke test, then select a reviewed, immutable image tag or digest for production. Record that value in your deployment configuration so an unattended restart cannot silently change the binary. Pull the selected image before replacing the running container and keep a rollback value available.
Use restart and network policies
Run the container with a restart policy such as unless-stopped, attach it to a dedicated network, and avoid publishing a public host port. A host-level reverse proxy can use -p 127.0.0.1:8080:8080; a containerized proxy can use the network name and omit -p entirely.

The example keeps the image tag visible for readability. In a real deployment, replace it with the pinned value you selected and reviewed.
Protect configuration files and secrets
imgproxy reads configuration from environment variables. Store them in a root-readable environment file or a secret manager, restrict file permissions, and do not commit the file to source control. Keep signing material and bearer-token secrets separate from non-sensitive deployment settings where your platform permits.
Terminate TLS before imgproxy
Point DNS at the reverse proxy, obtain a certificate, and forward only HTTPS traffic to the private imgproxy endpoint. The certificate and public hostname belong at the edge; imgproxy can continue serving HTTP on the private Docker network or loopback interface. Verify that the proxy preserves the request path and does not rewrite signed URLs.
Configuration that prevents abuse
Sign every URL in production
URL signing is disabled by default, but the official documentation highly recommends enabling it in production. Set IMGPROXY_KEY and IMGPROXY_SALT, keep both values secret, and have your trusted application generate the signed processing URLs. A client that can freely alter processing options or source URLs can turn an image endpoint into an uncontrolled fetch-and-transform service.
Rotate signing material as an application change, not as an ad hoc container edit. Plan how old URLs will expire or be regenerated before changing keys, because existing signatures may no longer validate after rotation.
Require an application credential when needed
Set IMGPROXY_SECRET when the proxy or application must authenticate requests with an Authorization: Bearer ... header. Use this when network location alone is not an adequate trust boundary, such as a shared internal network or a multi-tenant application.

Set IMGPROXY_ALLOWED_SOURCES to the host prefixes your service is supposed to fetch. Include a trailing slash in every host prefix. The documentation warns that omitting the slash can let a crafted user-info URL match the wrong host. Start with the smallest set of storage domains and paths that your application needs; do not allow arbitrary HTTP or HTTPS sources.
When you add a source domain, test both an allowed URL and a look-alike hostname. A source policy is only useful if the matching rule cannot be confused by user-info syntax, alternate ports, redirects, or an unexpected path.

Close SSRF routes
Review the controls for private, loopback, and link-local source addresses: IMGPROXY_ALLOW_PRIVATE_SOURCE_ADDRESSES, IMGPROXY_ALLOW_LOOPBACK_SOURCE_ADDRESSES, and IMGPROXY_ALLOW_LINK_LOCAL_SOURCE_ADDRESSES. Keep access to these address classes disabled unless your architecture has a documented reason to fetch them and you have isolated the network accordingly.
Blocking private addresses protects more than the VPS itself. It also reduces the chance that a malicious source URL can probe cloud metadata services, internal dashboards, Docker endpoints, or other machines reachable from the container.
Limit expensive work
Set limits appropriate to your workload for source resolution, source file size, redirects, animation frames, and result dimensions. imgproxy checks image type and dimensions to reduce unwanted resource use and image-bomb risk. Tight limits are especially important when clients can submit URLs directly or when source storage is user-controlled.
- Use a source file-size ceiling that covers legitimate originals but rejects unexpectedly large downloads.
- Restrict source resolution and output dimensions to the largest images your product actually displays.
- Cap redirects so a source cannot bounce through an unbounded chain.
- Limit animation frames when accepting GIF or other animated inputs.
- Set result-dimension limits so a small source cannot request an enormous decoded or rendered canvas.
Change one limit at a time and observe rejection rates, memory use, and transformation latency. A limit that is too low appears to users as a broken image; a limit that is too high becomes a resource-exhaustion opportunity.
Do not expose dangerous processing controls
Leave IMGPROXY_ALLOW_SECURITY_OPTIONS disabled unless callers cannot tamper with processing URLs and you have reviewed the consequences. The documentation warns that these options can bypass restrictions or enable denial-of-service behavior. Apply the same caution to Pro cache-bypass controls: enable them only when the caller is trusted and the operational effect is understood.
Keep SVG sanitization on
SVG sanitization defaults to true. Keep it enabled unless you have a reviewed, tested reason to change it. SVG files can contain active or unexpected content, so accepting unsanitized SVGs should be an explicit security decision rather than an accidental default.

Your application, not the browser, should decide which source URL and transformations are permitted. Generate URLs from a controlled set of resize, crop, format, and quality options, then sign them before placing them in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or API responses.
Keep source URLs stable and transformations deterministic where possible. Stable URLs improve cache reuse at the reverse proxy or CDN. If you change a source image in place, use versioned source paths or another cache-invalidation strategy so clients do not receive an older transformed result.
Test URL generation with representative originals: a large photograph, a transparent PNG, an animated image, an SVG, and any format your product promises to support. Confirm that each request is signed, fetched only from an allowlisted host, and rejected when a caller modifies the source or processing options.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How much CPU and RAM does a VPS need?
There is no authoritative universal sizing figure or guaranteed throughput number for this deployment in the official material. A tiny thumbnail service and a workload that decodes large animated originals have radically different memory and CPU profiles, so a single “minimum VPS” claim would be misleading.
Measure your own workload
- List the transformations your application actually requests, including source formats, maximum source dimensions, output dimensions, animation use, and quality settings.
- Create a representative sample set that includes ordinary, worst-case, and malformed or rejected inputs.
- Run the pinned container on a candidate VPS while generating the expected concurrent request level.
- Record CPU, resident memory, latency percentiles, upstream download time, output size, and error rates.
- Repeat with a higher concurrency level and with the largest legitimate source images to identify the point where latency or memory becomes unacceptable.
- Leave headroom for the reverse proxy, Docker, logging, kernel activity, and traffic bursts instead of sizing to the exact observed peak.
Compare VPS plans using the right axes
| Axis | What to examine |
|---|---|
| CPU architecture | Confirm that the provider’s architecture is supported by the image and matches any native dependencies in your deployment. |
| Memory under peak transformation load | Measure decoded image and animation workloads, not just idle container usage. |
| Bandwidth and egress | Account for source downloads, transformed responses, cache misses, and provider egress charges. |
| Cache location | Compare local disk, attached storage, and object-storage caching for latency and durability. |
| Network latency to source storage | Place the VPS near the bucket, origin server, or database-backed media service that imgproxy fetches. |
| Operational limits | Check connection limits, burst CPU behavior, disk performance, snapshots, and recovery options. |
If memory pressure appears before CPU saturation, reduce source and result limits or move to a plan with more RAM. If CPU is the bottleneck, inspect expensive filters, large resizes, animation, and output encoding before simply adding concurrency.

Common failure modes and fixes
The container starts, but clients cannot connect
Check whether port 8080 is intentionally private. A reverse proxy on another Docker network cannot reach the container until both services share a network. A host-level proxy must target the loopback address and port you bound. Also verify the VPS firewall and the proxy’s upstream timeout.
Recommended Free Tools
Every request fails signature validation
Confirm that the application and container use the same key and salt, that the application signs the exact path it sends, and that the reverse proxy does not rewrite the path, encoding, or trailing slash. After rotating credentials, regenerate URLs rather than retrying old signatures.
An allowed source is rejected
Inspect the exact source host, scheme, port, and path against IMGPROXY_ALLOWED_SOURCES. Ensure the configured host prefix ends with a slash and that the container can resolve and reach the origin. Redirects may lead to a host that is not allowlisted or exceed your redirect limit.
A source request is blocked as private
This is expected when the source resolves to a private, loopback, or link-local address and the corresponding allow control is disabled. Prefer a publicly routable, allowlisted media origin. Only enable private-address access after documenting the trust boundary and isolating the network.
Large or animated images cause slowdowns
Use the source file-size, source-resolution, animation-frame, and result-dimension limits to reject work your product does not need. Then measure again under expected concurrency. Do not compensate for uncontrolled inputs by exposing security options or cache-bypass controls.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Memory usage grows or the container restarts
Correlate restarts with source dimensions, animation, output format, and concurrency. Tighten limits, reduce concurrent work at the reverse proxy, and move to a larger VPS if representative traffic still exceeds the available memory. Keep the restart policy enabled so transient failures recover, but investigate the cause rather than relying on restarts as a capacity plan.
A production readiness checklist
- Docker image is pinned to a reviewed tag or digest.
- Container uses a restart policy and a dedicated Docker network.
- Port 8080 is private to the network or bound to loopback.
- HTTPS terminates at a reverse proxy with DNS configured correctly.
IMGPROXY_KEYandIMGPROXY_SALTare set and protected.IMGPROXY_SECRETis set when bearer-token authentication is required.IMGPROXY_ALLOWED_SOURCEScontains only required hosts, with trailing slashes.- Private, loopback, and link-local source-address policies have been reviewed.
- Source-size, resolution, redirect, animation, and result-dimension limits match the workload.
- Security options and Pro cache-bypass controls remain disabled unless explicitly justified.
- SVG sanitization remains enabled.
- Logs use a parseable format and exclude secrets.
- Alerts cover restarts, latency, memory, CPU, and upstream fetch errors.
- A representative load test has established practical CPU, memory, and bandwidth headroom.
Bottom line
For most teams, the right starting point is the OSS Docker image on a modest Linux VPS, fronted by a TLS reverse proxy and isolated from the public network. Add signed URLs, strict source allowlists, SSRF address controls, resource ceilings, and observable logs before production traffic arrives. Move to Pro only when its document previews, detection, advanced compression, specialized conversions, or other listed capabilities solve a requirement the OSS feature set cannot.
