apex_legacy_x64.dll is a game or application file from NVIDIA APEX middleware, not a Windows system file. If apex_legacy_x64.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the game or application that installed it instead of copying a replacement into System32.
The name is also unrelated to Apex Legends. “APEX” refers to an older NVIDIA physics and asset framework associated with PhysX. The exact game cannot be identified from the filename alone, because several applications can bundle similar runtime files.

Fix apex_legacy_x64.dll errors in order
1. Identify the application that owns the file
Time needed: 2 to 5 minutes
Start with the complete error message. Common examples include:
- “The program can’t start because apex_legacy_x64.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because apex_legacy_x64.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting apex_legacy_x64.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “apex_legacy_x64.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The filename alone is not enough to identify the affected program. Look at the title bar and the executable named in the error, then check where that program is installed.

For an Unreal Engine-based game, the file may be under a path similar to:
EngineBinariesThirdPartyPhysX3Win64VS2015
It may also sit beside the game executable or inside another third-party runtime directory.
Write down these details before changing anything:
- The game or application name.
- The full error text.
- The installation folder.
- Whether the error began after an update, reinstall, disk cleanup, antivirus alert, or moving the game.
- Whether the message names another file, such as
VCRUNTIME140.dll,MSVCP140.dll, orPxFoundation_x64.dll.
If the application was recently moved, check that its launcher still points to the correct folder. A launcher configured for an incomplete or old directory can report a missing DLL even when another copy exists elsewhere.

Time needed: 5 to 20 minutes
This is the safest and most likely fix. The launcher can restore the exact build, architecture, dependencies, and directory layout required by the game.
Steam
- Restart Steam.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the affected game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Start the game again from Steam.
If Steam reports that files were replaced, test the game before making any manual changes. If the same DLL disappears again, continue to the antivirus and storage checks below.
EA app
- Open the EA app.
- Select Library.
- Find the affected game.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Repair.
- Wait for the repair to complete.
- Launch the game again.
Other launchers use similar commands, usually called Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair. Use the launcher associated with the installation rather than downloading the DLL separately.
If verification fails, stops repeatedly, or restores the file only for it to vanish again, do not copy a file from another game. Reinstall the affected application from its official launcher instead.

3. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine a game DLL after an update, especially when the file was newly extracted or modified. Do not automatically assume that every detection is a false positive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an item whose path matches the affected game folder.
- Note the detection name and the original file location.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- The game came from a trusted official launcher.
- The quarantined path is inside that game’s installation directory.
- The detection has been assessed and is known to be incorrect or resolved.
- You are prepared to verify the game files again afterward.
After restoring a trusted file, run the launcher’s verification process. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the same file, investigate the exact detection before adding an exclusion. An exclusion should cover only the trusted game folder and should not be used to ignore an unknown executable or a DLL found in a temporary folder.
If the DLL appears in a location unrelated to the game, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and do not replace it manually.

Time needed: 10 to 15 minutes
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that apex_legacy_x64.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load it because a dependency is missing.
First, check the game folder. If apex_legacy_x64.dll is present but the application still fails, inspect the rest of the error for names such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dllMSVCP140.dllMSVCP140_1.dllapi-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dllPxFoundation_x64.dll

- Download the official
vc_redist.x64.exe. - Run it.
- Choose Repair if that option appears.
- Restart Windows.
- Verify the game files again.
- Launch the application.
Install the x86 package only when a separate 32-bit application needs it. Installing x86 does not make a 32-bit DLL compatible with a 64-bit process, and installing x64 does not repair a 32-bit program’s dependencies.
Several Visual C++ runtime versions can legitimately coexist. Do not remove older redistributables simply because a newer one is installed.
5. Install legacy PhysX only when the game requires it
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
Older games may depend on NVIDIA’s legacy PhysX System Software. That package supports previously released PhysX content, but it is not a universal replacement for the private APEX files bundled with a particular game.
Use this step only when:
- The game’s documentation or installer specifically requires legacy PhysX.
- The launcher repair completed but reports a PhysX-related dependency.
- The game is an older title known to use PhysX components.
- The error names a PhysX runtime rather than only
apex_legacy_x64.dll.
Download the legacy PhysX package only from NVIDIA’s official driver or PhysX pages. Install it, restart Windows, and run the game launcher’s file verification again.
Do not expect installing PhysX to restore every copy of apex_legacy_x64.dll. The correct copy normally comes from the affected game’s own installation files.

6. Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
Time needed: 1 minute
regsvr32 is normally used for COM and ActiveX components that provide a self-registration entry point. APEX is a game-runtime DLL, not normally a self-registering Windows component.
Do not run commands such as:
regsvr32 apex_legacy_x64.dll
They usually produce another error, such as an entry-point or module-load failure, and do not repair the game. Registering the file also does not solve a missing dependency.

Do not copy the DLL into either of these folders:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those folders are not the correct home for a game-private APEX runtime. Copying files there can create DLL search-order conflicts and can cause another application to load the wrong build.
7. Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus restart time
DISM and System File Checker repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party game DLL, so use them after repairing the application rather than instead of it.
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete. Test the application and verify its files again if necessary.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, that addresses Windows components, not necessarily apex_legacy_x64.dll. If both commands complete without fixing the application, return to the game launcher and reinstall the affected program.

8. Update drivers only for a broader graphics or launch problem
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
A missing APEX DLL is usually a game-file problem, not a graphics-driver problem. Driver updates become relevant when the game also crashes, shows graphics initialization errors, or fails after a Windows or GPU change.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Also check System devices for chipset-related warnings. Do not uninstall a working driver merely because the game reports a missing DLL.

9. Reinstall the affected game or application
Time needed: 20 minutes to several hours
Reinstall when verification cannot restore the file, the installation was interrupted, or every repair removes the DLL again.

- Uninstall the affected game or application.
- Restart Windows.
- Check that the old installation folder is gone or contains no damaged leftover files.
- Install again using the official launcher.
- Start the application once before adding mods.
- Install updates.
- Test the application again.
If the error returns after adding a mod, unofficial repack, custom executable, or third-party patch, remove that modification and verify the installation. Mixed files from different releases can cause invalid-DLL and entry-point errors.

Common questions
Is apex_legacy_x64.dll part of Apex Legends?
No. The name refers to NVIDIA APEX middleware. It does not identify EA’s Apex Legends game.
Is it a Windows file?
No. It is third-party application middleware and normally belongs inside a game or application directory. It should not be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I download the DLL by itself?
Do not use random DLL download sites sites. A loose file can contain malware, be the wrong architecture, belong to another build, or leave the actual dependency problem unresolved. Use the affected game’s official launcher or installer.
Should I install NVIDIA PhysX?
Only when the affected game requires the legacy PhysX runtime or names a PhysX dependency. PhysX is not a guaranteed replacement for the game’s bundled APEX DLL.

Check the complete error for a missing dependency, especially a Visual C++ runtime or PhysX file. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency required by the named DLL.
Does the x64 name matter?
Yes. x64 indicates a 64-bit build. A 64-bit DLL cannot satisfy a 32-bit process, and an x86 DLL cannot replace the required x64 build.
What information should I give the developer?
Provide the game name, launcher, complete error text, Windows version, installation path, whether the file exists, verification results, antivirus detection details, and whether the problem began after an update or mod. If every clean repair and reinstall fails, those details help the developer investigate a broken package or compatibility issue.
