vmwarebase.dll Missing: Repair VMware Without DLL Downloads

By VGSources Team 9 min read

vmwarebase.dll is a VMware application library, not a Windows system file. If Windows says vmwarebase.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair the VMware Workstation or legacy Player installation that owns the file instead of downloading a loose DLL.

The safest fix is to reinstall the complete matching VMware product from the official Broadcom Support Portal. Do not copy vmwarebase.dll into System32 or SysWOW64.

What vmwarebase.dll belongs to

File inventories commonly describe vmwarebase.dll as the “VMware base library.” VMware desktop products, including Workstation and older Player installations, use it as an application-private component. VMware utilities such as vmnetcfg.exe may also depend on it.

It normally stays beside the VMware executable that loads it, in a path similar to:

#1 Best Overall
Sale
VMware vSphere For Dummies
  • Used Book in Good Condition
C:Program FilesVMwareVMware Workstationvmwarebase.dll
C:Program Files (x86)VMwareVMware Playervmwarebase.dll

Your path may differ. The correct location depends on the installed product, release, and executable.

What you find What it means
vmwarebase.dll beside VMware executables The file is in the expected application directory
VMware starts but vmnetcfg.exe fails A utility may be from a different release or incomplete installation
The file is present but an entry-point error appears The DLL and its loader probably come from mismatched builds
The file is quarantined Security software removed it and VMware may now be incomplete
Several unrelated programs show bad-image errors Windows or storage corruption becomes more plausible

Public catalogues contain historical 32-bit VMware builds, but they are not a complete official VMware version list. Do not select a replacement by file size, bitness, or catalogue version alone. The DLL must match the complete VMware installation and the executable loading it.

What the error message means

The wording varies with Windows and the VMware executable:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • “The program can’t start because vmwarebase.dll is missing from your computer” means the loader could not find the expected file.
  • “vmwarebase.dll was not found” usually means the application directory is incomplete or the executable is looking in the wrong installation.
  • “The code execution cannot proceed” has the same general meaning, although a dependency may also be missing.
  • “The procedure entry point could not be located” usually indicates mismatched VMware files.
  • “Not designed to run on Windows,” “Bad Image,” 0xc000012f, or 0xc000007b means Windows rejected the DLL or one of its dependencies. It does not mean that vmwarebase.dll is a Windows component.

These messages can follow an interrupted upgrade, failed uninstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup, or copying a VMware utility from another release. Installing Player files over Workstation files can create the same problem.

Fix 1: Identify the VMware installation that owns the file

Before changing anything, identify the exact executable that fails.

Check the shortcut

  1. Right-click the VMware shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, read Target.
  4. Note the folder containing the executable.
  5. Select Open File Location if available.

Look in that same folder for vmwarebase.dll. Also check the VMware installation folder one level above the executable.

Check installed applications

  1. Press Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for VMware.
  5. Record whether the entry is Workstation Pro, Player, or another VMware product.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it and choose Modify, Repair, or Uninstall if offered.

On older Windows layouts:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:

text
appwiz.cpl

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select the VMware entry.
  3. Choose Change or Uninstall.

Do not delete virtual-machine folders during this process. Common VM files include .vmx, .vmdk, .nvram, and snapshot files. Back up the entire VM folder before uninstalling VMware.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall VMware

This is the most likely solution when VMware alone reports the error.

  1. Close VMware Workstation, Player, and related utilities.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Download the required Workstation Pro installer from Broadcom Support Portal → My Downloads → Free Software Downloads → VMware Workstation Pro.
  4. Choose the release that matches your existing installation or the release you intend to use.
  5. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  6. Follow the setup wizard.
  7. If the installer offers Repair, choose it first.
  8. Restart Windows after the repair completes.
  9. Open VMware and test the affected virtual machine or utility.

If no repair option is available:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find VMware Workstation or Player.
  3. Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Run the official VMware installer as administrator.
  6. Reinstall the complete product.
  7. Reopen VMware and browse to your existing VM folder if it is not detected automatically.

A normal uninstall should not require deleting your virtual machines. Confirm the VM folders are backed up before proceeding, and do not select an option that removes user data unless you deliberately want to remove those machines.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if:

  • VMware opens without the DLL dialog.
  • The affected utility starts.
  • Existing virtual machines appear in the library.
  • VMware can power on a test VM without a bad-image or entry-point error.

If the same error returns immediately, stop replacing individual files. The installation may contain mixed releases, or antivirus software may be removing the file again.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Windows Defender or another endpoint security product can quarantine a VMware DLL. A quarantined file should not simply be restored without checking its origin.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Look for an event mentioning vmwarebase.dll or a VMware executable.
  5. Expand the event and record the file path and detection name.
  6. Confirm that the VMware installer came from the official Broadcom Support Portal.
  7. If the installer is verified, reinstall VMware instead of restoring a loose DLL.
  8. Only use Restore or Allow on device after confirming the detection is a false positive and your security team or vendor guidance supports that action.

If the file is quarantined again after reinstalling, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. A security product repeatedly blocking the file may indicate a modified installer, a damaged file, or a genuine detection.

Fix 4: Check for a mismatched build or architecture

A DLL can exist in the expected folder and still fail. This happens when files were copied between Workstation and Player, when an old utility was retained after an upgrade, or when only one DLL was replaced.

Do not mix:

  • Workstation files with Player files
  • Files from different VMware releases
  • A copied vmnetcfg.exe with unrelated VMware libraries
  • A 32-bit utility with an incompatible component set

A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit VMware component, but the DLL must match the executable and VMware release. The practical fix is to reinstall the complete product rather than trying to determine compatibility from the DLL alone.

To find the failing executable:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter:

text
eventvwr.msc

  1. Press Enter.
  2. Open Windows Logs → Application.
  3. Look for an error at the time of the crash.
  4. Record Faulting application name and Faulting module name.

If the faulting application is a VMware utility from a different folder than Workstation, remove the copied utility and reinstall the VMware product that supplies it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Repair a named Microsoft runtime dependency

Visual C++ is not a general fix for a missing vmwarebase.dll. Install or repair a runtime only when the error specifically names a dependency such as:

MSVCP*.dll
VCRUNTIME*.dll
MSVCR*.dll

Use Microsoft’s official Latest Supported Visual C++ Redistributable Downloads page. Install the architecture required by the failing VMware executable. On 64-bit Windows, some older 32-bit applications require the x86 package even when Windows itself is 64-bit.

Older applications may require older redistributables alongside newer ones. Do not remove existing runtime packages simply because a newer package is installed.

After installing the required runtime:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Launch VMware again.
  3. If vmwarebase.dll is still reported as missing, repair VMware itself. The runtime did not replace the application-owned DLL.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components when many programs fail

Use Windows repair commands when unrelated applications also show missing-DLL, bad-image, or startup errors. They are less likely to fix a VMware-only problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:

text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:

text
sfc /scannow

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Test VMware again.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair Windows components; they do not download or reconstruct a VMware-owned DLL.

Running these commands manually can mean repeating scans without knowing which component changed. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan finds, while repair actions are handled by the full version; VMware’s official reinstall remains the definitive fix for this application-owned file.

If SFC reports files it could not repair, or many applications still fail, review the CBS and Event Viewer results, run a full Windows Security scan, and consider Microsoft’s recovery options or System Restore.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when the evidence points there

vmwarebase.dll is not normally repaired through Device Manager. However, a VMware networking or virtualization problem can involve drivers after a Windows or VMware update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check them as follows:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Network adapters and System devices.
  4. Look for a warning icon or a device that appeared immediately after the VMware failure.
  5. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  6. Read the General and Driver tabs.
  7. Use Update driver only for the device implicated by the error.
  8. Restart Windows and test VMware.

Do not uninstall random devices or disable virtualization drivers as a general DLL repair. If VMware’s installer includes a repair option for its networking components, use that instead.

Manually hunting through Device Manager for stale drivers can mean guessing between many similarly named entries. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; reinstalling VMware remains the definitive fix for vmwarebase.dll.

What not to do

Do not download a loose DLL

Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong VMware build, wrong architecture, altered contents, or malware. A replacement may remove the first message while leaving the installation mismatched.

Use the official Broadcom Support Portal installer and reinstall the complete product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64

Windows normally searches the application directory before system locations. VMware expects its private DLLs to remain with its own executable. System-wide copying can create version conflicts and DLL-loading risks.

Do not run regsvr32 on this file

regsvr32 applies to self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. vmwarebase.dll is an application library, not a normal registration component.

Running:

regsvr32 vmwarebase.dll

will likely produce a message that the registration entry point was not found. It does not repair the VMware installation.

Do not delete VMware folders before backing up VMs

Uninstalling the program is different from deleting virtual-machine data. Back up the VM folders first, then repair or reinstall VMware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If reinstalling VMware does not help

Record the following before seeking further support:

  • Exact VMware product name and build
  • Full path of the failing executable
  • Full path where vmwarebase.dll is expected
  • Exact error text and status code
  • Faulting application and module from Event Viewer
  • Windows edition and build
  • Antivirus detection and action
  • Whether other applications show similar errors

Then run a full Windows Security scan and check the disk for errors. If the problem began directly after a known system change, review Settings → System → Recovery for an appropriate recovery option.

FAQ

Is vmwarebase.dll part of Windows?

No. It is a VMware application DLL and should normally remain in the VMware installation directory.

Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?

Not automatically. Install or repair Visual C++ only when the error names an MSVCP, VCRUNTIME, or MSVCR dependency. DirectX and .NET are not general solutions for a missing VMware base library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is VMware Workstation the only product involved?

Workstation is the current relevant Windows desktop product. Older Player installations and VMware utilities may also contain or load this library. Use the owning executable and installed-product entry to identify the correct installation.

Can I restore the quarantined file?

Only after verifying the installer and the detection. Reinstalling from the official VMware source is safer than restoring an unverified standalone DLL.

Why does VMware start while one utility does not?

The utility may have been copied from another release, or its adjacent VMware libraries may be incomplete. Reinstall the complete matching VMware product rather than replacing only vmwarebase.dll.

Will DISM or SFC replace this DLL?

No. They repair Windows components. They are appropriate when broader Windows corruption is suspected, not as the primary fix for a VMware-only error.
