“Connection to server timed out” means Apex Legends did not receive a response from an EA service quickly enough. That does not automatically mean your internet is offline. The cause may be an EA or platform outage, a busy data center, packet loss, Wi-Fi or router instability, an outdated game, or a stuck platform session.
Start by checking the EA server-status page and your platform’s service status. If Apex or the platform is down, waiting is the correct fix. If services are operating, work through the local checks below in order.

Check whether Apex Legends is down first
- Open EA’s server-status page and check Apex Legends.
- Check the relevant service: Xbox, PlayStation Network, Nintendo services, or Steam.
- Check official Apex communications, especially @PlayApex, for maintenance or a widespread incident.
If Apex is reported offline, do not reinstall the game, change DNS, or forward ports. Those steps cannot repair an EA outage. If everything says “online” but players across different platforms and networks are reporting the same timeout, a partial, regional, or newly developing incident is still possible. Status pages do not always expose every regional problem immediately.

Any statement about Apex’s live status should include the exact date and time checked. Without a current check, the responsible conclusion is that an outage is unconfirmed—not that the game is definitely up or down.

What the error codes mean
EA describes several related Apex connection failures. These descriptions identify the stage of the failure broadly; they do not prove whether EA, your ISP, router, or device is ultimately responsible.
| Error | EA’s description | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
code:net |
An EA server stopped answering the game. | Check status, restart Apex and your router, then test another data center or connection. |
code:leaf |
EA servers are not responding, so you cannot connect to a match. | Check for an outage before changing local settings. |
code:clock |
Apex servers stopped waiting for the player to connect. | Check status, packet loss, the router, and the selected data center. |
| No code | A general connection timeout. | Follow the full server, platform, client, and network checklist. |
See EA’s current Apex error-code guidance for the official descriptions.
Quick fixes in the right order
1. Fully close and restart Apex
Exit the game rather than simply returning to the console dashboard or minimizing it on PC. Reopen Apex and try again. This clears a temporary game or authentication session.
2. Restart the device
Restart Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch. A restart can clear a stuck platform login, cached game session, or local network state.
3. Restart the modem and router
Power off the modem and router, wait briefly, then turn them back on. Wait for the internet connection to return before launching Apex. This may clear a transient NAT or routing problem, but it will not fix an EA-side outage.
4. Test Ethernet
If possible, connect the device directly to the router with Ethernet. Wired networking removes weak Wi-Fi signal, interference, access-point roaming, and some household congestion from the test. It is not a guaranteed fix, but it helps determine whether Wi-Fi is involved. EA’s connection-quality guide also identifies wireless conditions, background traffic, router placement, and packet loss as possible contributors.

5. Change Apex’s data center
At the Apex launch screen, before entering the lobby, select Data Center near the bottom of the screen. Choose a nearby center with low ping and zero or minimal packet loss.

6. Check for updates
Make sure both Apex and the system have finished updating. A client on an older patch may fail to connect to players or services using a newer version.
- Steam: Check Apex’s download and update queue.
- EA app: Open Library, select Apex Legends, and check the game-management menu for an update.
- Xbox: Go to My Games & apps → Apex Legends → Menu → Manage All → Updates.
- PlayStation: Open the game’s options menu and select Check for Update.
- Nintendo Switch: Open the game’s options and check for a software update.
Repair Apex on PC
Repair files when the timeout affects only one PC, began after an update, or appears alongside crashes or startup problems. Do this after checking for updates.
- EA app: Open Library → Apex Legends → the game-management menu → Repair.
- Steam: Library → right-click Apex Legends → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
Launcher labels can vary slightly by version. Restart both Steam and the EA app completely if a launcher session appears stuck. Also disable unnecessary overlays and background downloads while testing, and check that Apex, the launcher, and anti-cheat components are permitted by your firewall or security software.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not launch Apex simultaneously through Steam and the EA app with the same linked account; EA warns that this can cause account and progression issues. Steam players also need a linked EA account.

Platform-specific checks
PlayStation
- Check PlayStation Network status.
- Install Apex and system updates.
- Restart the console and test a wired connection.
- If EA’s platform guidance calls for it, use PlayStation Safe Mode to clear cache. Select only the cache-related option described by the console guidance; do not choose a destructive reset.
- Confirm the account can use online multiplayer under the applicable PlayStation conditions.
Xbox
- Check Xbox service status and install pending updates.
- Restart the console to clear its cached session.
- Check the console’s NAT type.
- Test Ethernet and restart the router.
- Confirm the account has the applicable online-multiplayer entitlement.
Nintendo Switch
- Check Nintendo service status and required Nintendo Switch Online access.
- Install Apex and system updates.
- Restart the Switch and, where appropriate, clear its cache using Nintendo’s platform guidance.
- Test a closer or less congested network connection if available.
Apex is listed by EA for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, the EA app for PC, and Steam for PC. Platform menus and availability can change.
Test the network instead of assuming it is fine
Other online games working does not completely rule out a network problem. Games can use different servers, routes, authentication systems, and UDP traffic. A normal download speed also does not prove that the route to Apex has no packet loss.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, video streams, VPNs, and large uploads.
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet.
- Test another device on the same network.
- Try Apex briefly through a phone hotspot as a diagnostic.
- Check whether every Apex data center fails or only one.
If a hotspot works while your home connection fails, investigate the home router, ISP route, NAT, DNS, or Wi-Fi. If the hotspot fails in the same way, an Apex, account, platform, or client problem becomes more likely. Mobile data is not a practical permanent gaming solution because of latency, data limits, and carrier-grade NAT.
Advanced fixes: DNS, NAT, firewall, and VPNs
DNS
DNS resolves service names; it does not repair an overloaded Apex server, packet loss after connection, or a broken account session. Treat a DNS change as an optional, reversible test—not a universal fix.
Record your original settings, use a reputable provider, restart the device and router afterward, and judge the result from your own region and ISP. An older EA forum community-manager response suggested manual DNS, including Google’s public DNS, for one Xbox case. That is historical case-specific guidance, not a current guarantee for Apex.
On Windows, these optional commands reset local networking components:

- WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
- Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
- Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
Run Command Prompt as administrator where required, and restart Windows after netsh winsock reset. These commands do not repair EA servers and may remove custom network configuration.
NAT and firewall
Investigate NAT and firewall settings when Apex alone is affected, friends or parties fail, the console reports strict or unavailable NAT, or the problem occurs only on one network.
- Enable the router’s normal UPnP feature if appropriate.
- Check the console’s NAT status.
- Allow Apex, Steam or the EA app, and anti-cheat components through the firewall.
- Configure security software correctly rather than leaving protection disabled.
Avoid copying old port-forwarding tables from generic guides. Port requirements can be platform-specific and change over time; forwarding ports can also create security and configuration problems. Use current platform-specific guidance from EA or the platform vendor before attempting it.
VPNs
A VPN can occasionally bypass a bad ISP route, but it often adds latency, worsens packet loss, or creates new authentication and anti-cheat complications. Do not use one as a first-line Apex timeout fix.
Use the symptoms to identify the likely cause
| Pattern | More likely explanation | Best next move |
|---|---|---|
| Players on several networks and platforms are affected | Outage, maintenance, update deployment, or regional routing incident | Check official status and wait. |
| Only your devices fail on the home network | Router, ISP, DNS, NAT, or local route | Restart networking equipment and test another connection. |
| Only one PC or console fails | Corrupt files, firewall, launcher session, or device Wi-Fi | Repair files, restart launchers, check security software, and test Ethernet. |
| Login works but matchmaking fails | Data-center, matchmaking, packet-loss, or server issue | Check all data centers and official communications. |
| The problem began after an update | Pending update, version mismatch, corrupted update, or post-patch instability | Finish updates, repair files, then check whether the incident is widespread. |
When waiting is the correct fix
Stop changing local settings and wait when EA reports downtime, official Apex channels acknowledge an incident, friends on different networks see the same error, every data center fails, or another network produces the same result. EA’s error guidance notes that some connection codes require waiting for a server-side fix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reinstalling Apex cannot fix an EA outage. Reinstallation is worth considering only when the service works for other players and the problem remains isolated to one device after updates and file repair. EA says reinstalling does not remove Apex progress, provided you return to the correct linked account.

Bottom line
Check EA and platform status before touching DNS, ports, or reinstallations. If services are online, restart Apex, your device, and router; select a nearby low-loss data center; install updates; repair PC files; and test Ethernet or another network. If the same timeout affects multiple players, platforms, or connections, the evidence points away from your setup—and waiting for EA or the platform service is the sensible solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Apex time out when other games work?
Different games use different servers, routes, authentication systems, and traffic patterns. Other games working does not rule out packet loss or a routing problem between your network and Apex.
Does changing DNS fix code:net?
Usually not. DNS can help with a narrow name-resolution or routing issue, but it cannot repair an unresponsive EA server or packet loss after connection. Treat it as an optional test.
Should I reinstall Apex?
No, not as a first step. Check service status, restart your equipment, update the game, and repair files first. Reinstall only when the issue is isolated to one device and corrupted files remain plausible.
Does the timeout mean I am banned?
No. A connection timeout by itself is not evidence of a ban. Check service status, platform status, and your network before assuming an account action.
Is Apex down if EA’s status page says online?
Not necessarily. A status page can miss a partial, regional, or newly developing incident. Compare official Apex communications with reports from players on other networks and platforms.
