Destroyer2009, who claimed responsibility for disrupting the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) in March 2024, told TechCrunch that the exploit he used was fully patched. Respawn had announced security updates after the incident, but the cited reporting did not establish that the studio had confirmed those updates fixed this specific exploit.
What did the hacker say was patched?
In an April 18, 2024 report, TechCrunch quoted Destroyer2009 as saying: “The exploit I’ve used in [Apex Legends Global Series] is fully patched.” He said he tested it after Respawn’s March 26 update and found it no longer worked, while allowing that it might have been fixed earlier. That is the attacker’s account, not independent confirmation from Respawn.

TechCrunch said it asked Respawn and Electronic Arts to confirm the fix, but neither responded to its requests. The report did not identify the vulnerability or explain how the exploit worked. TechCrunch’s April 18 report
What did Respawn confirm?
Respawn publicly described security work without tying it to the tournament exploit in the statements cited by TechCrunch. On March 19, 2024, it said: “Our teams have deployed the first of a layered series of updates to protect the Apex Legends player community and create a secure experience for everyone.” A week later, Respawn said it had added another update intended to further protect players and competitive integrity.

Those announcements establish that Respawn deployed protective updates after the incident. They do not, on their own, confirm that the specific exploit Destroyer2009 described was among the issues fixed. TechCrunch’s March 20 report
What happened during the ALGS incident?
During live matches at a March 2024 ALGS tournament, two prominent players appeared to have cheats activated. Destroyer2009 claimed responsibility in an interview with TechCrunch and said he acted “just for fun”; he declined to provide technical details. The incident compromised the competition’s integrity, and organizers postponed the event indefinitely, according to TechCrunch.

Was the hack an Easy Anti-Cheat remote-code-execution attack?
The public reporting does not establish that. TechCrunch reported that Easy Anti-Cheat said it was confident no remote-code-execution vulnerability in its software was being exploited and that there was no public evidence pointing to that explanation. The exploit’s mechanism and any vulnerability involved remain undisclosed in the cited coverage.

That means the incident should not be described as a confirmed Easy Anti-Cheat RCE. The available reporting also does not establish how many players or systems were affected, or whether ordinary players faced the same exposure as the tournament participants.

January 2025 account compromises
In its 2025 anti-cheat and matchmaking update, Respawn said that a few high-profile professional and creator accounts were compromised toward the end of January 2025. It said it discovered and resolved two contributing exploits: one that targeted party privacy status affecting custom matches, and another that capitalized on server-to-server handshake verification. The update does not identify either as the exploit used in the 2024 ALGS incident.
March 2026 hardware-device enforcement
EA’s March 4, 2026 anti-cheat update concerns third-party hardware devices—including Strikepacks, Cronus and XIM—used to gain an unfair advantage. EA said accounts confirmed to use such devices to cheat would receive permanent bans. This is an enforcement policy about hardware-assisted cheating, not a disclosure about the 2024 tournament exploit.
