What was Shadowfall in Apex Legends?
EA announced Shadowfall as part of the Fight or Fright event, scheduled for October 15 through November 5, 2019. It used a nighttime version of Kings Canyon and started with 35 solo players: the Apex Legends Team described each player as dropping in with “34 other solo players.”

At first, everyone was a living Legend trying to survive alone. When a player died, they returned as an undead version of their Legend and joined the Shadow Squad. The match changed fundamentally once only ten living Legends remained: they had to join forces and make it to an evac ship, while the Shadows tried to stop them. EA’s 2019 Fight or Fright announcement describes the event rules.
How did Shadowfall work?
Living Legends: survive, then cooperate
Before the final phase, you began on your own. The official rules do not specify a special route, preferred weapon, or Legend ranking for surviving this part. The important rule to plan around is what happens when you are eliminated: you change sides and join the Shadows.

When ten living Legends were left, the objective shifted from solo survival to reaching the evac ship together. Cooperation at that stage was mandatory, not simply an optional way to play. EA’s announcement states: “The battle rages until there are only ten living Legends left, who must then join forces and make it to an evac ship while the Shadow Squad attempts to stop them at all costs.”
Shadows: pursue the living
Shadows lost their weapons and Legend abilities, but gained increased movement and jump speed, a melee attack, the ability to scale walls, and unlimited respawns via skydive. Their job was to prevent the living Legends from escaping aboard the evac ship.

Those rules suggest that a living player should be alert to elevated approaches and avoid becoming isolated, while Shadows can use mobility and repeated attacks to apply pressure. Those are tactical inferences from the official rules, not routes or strategies published by EA.
What happens when you die in Shadowfall?
You return as a Shadow and join the Shadow Squad, changing from a solo survivor into part of the opposing side. You no longer have weapons or Legend abilities; your tools are faster movement and jumps, wall scaling, melee, and unlimited skydive respawns. Because elimination changes your role rather than ending your participation, the match continues from the Shadow side.

How was Shadowfall different from Shadow Royale?
Shadow Royale was a separate mode featured in EA’s 2020 Fight or Fright return. The two modes share the idea of players returning as Shadows, but their team structures and objectives differ.

Can you play Shadowfall now?
Shadowfall was announced for the October 15–November 5, 2019 Fight or Fright event. EA’s 2020 announcement documents Shadow Royale, a different mode; the two cited announcements do not confirm that Shadowfall is currently in rotation or otherwise playable. Treat Shadowfall as a historical limited-time mode unless a current EA announcement says it has returned.
