apexframeworkchecked_x64.dll: Diagnose Its Missing Game Dependency

apexframeworkchecked_x64.dll is a 64-bit NVIDIA APEX Framework runtime file used by some games and applications. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load, repair the program that installed it before attempting any system-wide fix.

Start with this diagnostic checklist

Before changing Windows, record three details:

  1. Which game or program shows the error? The filename alone cannot identify the original publisher, exact game, APEX build, file version, size, or hash.
  2. When did the failure begin? Note whether it followed an update, failed installation, antivirus detection, cleanup utility, driver change, or reinstall.
  3. Is the affected program 32-bit or 64-bit? The _x64 suffix identifies this DLL as 64-bit, but the application determines which architecture it needs. A 64-bit Windows installation can still run 32-bit programs that require x86 dependencies.

Do not download the file from a random DLL website. An arbitrary copy may contain malware, belong to a different APEX configuration, use the wrong architecture, or leave the real damaged game installation untouched. Use the affected game’s launcher, its official installer, or NVIDIA’s official PhysX System Software page instead.

What this DLL is and where it belongs

NVIDIA APEX is middleware built alongside PhysX. Its Windows distribution uses separate DLLs for the framework and its modules, and NVIDIA documents release, profile, and checked configurations. The word CHECKED therefore identifies a legitimate development/runtime configuration; it is not merely a random name.

Public game file inventories place ApexFrameworkCHECKED_x64.dll in application folders such as BinariesWin64 and Unreal Engine or PhysX third-party directories. It is not a normal Windows component and should not ordinarily be placed in:

  • a generic folder shared by unrelated games

The exact owning game cannot be determined from the filename. If the error appears in only one game, that game’s installation is the leading suspect. If several unrelated programs report similar failures, investigate broader system, security, or storage problems.

Fix 1: Verify the affected game

This is the safest and most likely fix because it restores the DLL together with the matching APEX and PhysX files.

Steam

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click the affected game.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Open Installed Files.
  5. Select Verify integrity of game files.
  6. Wait for the check and any replacement download to finish.
  7. Restart Steam, then launch the game again.

Steam may report that some files could not be validated because certain files are local configuration files. That does not automatically mean verification failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Another launcher

Look for a menu named Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Check files beside the game. The exact wording varies by launcher. Run the repair while the launcher is online, allow it to replace damaged files, and restart the launcher before testing.

A successful repair normally allows the game to pass the startup point where the error appeared. If the same message remains, continue rather than copying a replacement DLL manually.

Fix 2: Reinstall the game’s bundled prerequisites

Some older games include PhysX or APEX installers in their own folders. After verifying files, inspect the game directory for folders named Redist, Redistributables, Prerequisites, or similar. Run only installers supplied with the game or downloaded from the game’s official publisher.

If the game specifically requires NVIDIA PhysX, install or repair the official NVIDIA PhysX System Software. For an older title, the publisher may require NVIDIA PhysX Legacy System Software instead. Do not install the legacy package merely because the error mentions APEX; the affected game’s installer or documentation is authoritative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart Windows after installing the prerequisite and test the game again.

If the game still fails, uninstall it through its launcher or Windows, restart the computer, and reinstall it from the official source. Avoid deleting save data unless you know it is backed up. Reinstalling restores the complete, matching binary set rather than just one DLL.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus removed the file

Security software can quarantine a game file after an update or after the file changes. Do not immediately allow the item back.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Open Protection history.
  4. Find the detection associated with the game’s installation directory.
  5. Review the detected path, action, and detection name.
  6. If the file came from a trusted, verified installation, follow Windows Security’s restore or allow option.
  7. If the source or detection is unclear, leave it quarantined and reinstall the game instead.

After restoring a file, run a scan and verify the game again. If apexframeworkchecked_x64.dll repeatedly disappears after every repair, investigate antivirus exclusions, ransomware protection, file permissions, disk errors, and possible malware. Do not create a broad exclusion for an entire drive.

Fix 4: Repair Visual C++ only when the evidence points there

A missing Visual C++ runtime can prevent an otherwise present APEX DLL from loading, but the filename ending in .dll does not prove that Visual C++ is the cause.

Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Install the architecture required by the game:

  • A 64-bit game generally needs the x64 package.
  • A 32-bit game needs the x86 package, even on 64-bit Windows.
  • A game bundle containing both 32-bit and 64-bit components may require both packages.

If an installed entry is already present, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable entry, select its menu, choose Modify, and use Repair when available. Restart Windows and test the application.

Do not uninstall every older Visual C++ package. Multiple versions can coexist, and removing them can damage unrelated programs. If repairing Visual C++ changes nothing, return to the game installation rather than repeatedly reinstalling runtimes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 5: Interpret “specified module could not be found” correctly

A message such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean apexframeworkchecked_x64.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load one of its dependent DLLs.

First, confirm whether the file exists in the game’s own directory. Do not move it. Then:

  1. Run the game’s file verification again.
  2. Repair or install the Visual C++ architecture required by the game.
  3. Reinstall the game’s PhysX/APEX prerequisites.
  4. Check the game’s logs, if available.
  5. Review Event Viewer for a related application error.

To open Event Viewer, right-click Start, choose Event Viewer, then inspect Windows Logs → Application around the time of the failed launch. Look for the game’s executable, SideBySide, application errors, or a named dependency.

A reputable dependency-analysis utility can show which imported module is missing, but download diagnostic software only from a trustworthy publisher. A dependency report is evidence for the next repair step, not a reason to download each listed DLL separately.

Fix 6: Use Windows repair for broader component corruption

SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They generally will not recreate a game-local NVIDIA APEX DLL, so use them after repairing the application rather than as the first response.

Install pending Windows updates, restart, then open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin):

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin).
  3. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. When DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows and test the game.

Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence. Run DISM first, then SFC. If SFC reports repaired files but the game still shows the same error, that result does not prove the game DLL was restored.

When manually repeating SFC and DISM leaves you guessing about what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show its findings; repairs are performed by the full version, but reinstalling the affected game remains the definitive fix for its missing APEX file.

Do not use Windows Features to enable random components for this error. Open Settings → Optional features → More Windows features only when the affected game’s documentation specifically requires a Windows component such as legacy DirectPlay. Enabling unrelated features does not restore an application-local APEX runtime.

Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when logs implicate them

A generic GPU driver reinstall is not a primary fix for a missing game-local DLL. Consider it when the problem began with a graphics driver or PhysX installation and Event Viewer or the NVIDIA installer points to that change.

To inspect the installed adapter:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the graphics adapter and select Properties.
  5. Review the General and Driver tabs.
  6. Use Update driver only with a driver from Windows Update or the GPU manufacturer’s official source.

If a recent driver installation clearly triggered the issue, use Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when available, or reinstall the manufacturer’s official driver package using its clean-install option. Restart Windows and retest the game.

Manually hunting through driver versions can be time-consuming and may select the wrong package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what it finds; the full version performs driver installation, but a driver change should not replace repairing the game that owns this DLL.

Fix 8: Use System Restore for a recent, identifiable change

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver, utility, or system-setting change and a restore point predates the failure.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Enter rstrui.exe.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
  7. Let Windows restart and complete the operation.

Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance. System Restore does not normally remove personal files, but it can reverse software, driver, and system-setting changes. It cannot guarantee restoration of a game file that was already deleted or quarantined.

Why common DLL fixes fail

Copying the file to System32

This can create version conflicts, expose the system to an untrusted binary, and still fail because the game searches its own directory or needs companion APEX modules. Keep the file beside the executable and restore it through the owning application’s installer.

Running regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. APEX Framework is normally loaded by the game and does not need registry registration. A registration error does not repair a missing dependency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installing only the x64 runtime

The DLL is 64-bit, but the game may include separate 32-bit tools, launchers, or helpers. Install the architecture required by the failing executable. An x64 Visual C++ package does not replace the x86 package.

If the error keeps returning

Use this order:

  1. Check the game’s quarantine history.
  2. Verify or reinstall the game.
  3. Check disk space, permissions, and disk health.
  4. Review ransomware protection and security logs.
  5. Run a malware scan.
  6. Use Event Viewer or dependency analysis to identify a missing companion module.
  7. Use DISM followed by SFC for Windows component repair.
  8. Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.

If only one game fails, keep focusing on that game’s files and prerequisites. If several unrelated applications begin reporting missing DLLs, treat the pattern as a broader Windows, storage, security, or malware problem.

FAQ

Is apexframeworkchecked_x64.dll a Windows file?

No. Evidence places it with application-local NVIDIA APEX/PhysX files, often inside a game’s binary directory.

Which game installed it?

The filename cannot identify the exact game. Check the error dialog, launcher, executable path, installed applications, and recent installation history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I download the DLL separately?

You should not use an arbitrary DLL download. Restore the file from the affected game’s official installer or launcher so its version and companion files match.

Should I install NVIDIA PhysX?

Install the official PhysX package when the affected game requires it or includes it among its prerequisites. It may not contain the exact game-bundled ApexFrameworkCHECKED_x64.dll, so repairing the game remains the primary solution.

Does the CHECKED name mean the file is fake?

No. NVIDIA documents checked configurations as legitimate APEX builds distinct from ordinary release builds. The correct build must still come from the application that requires it.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file is visible?

A dependent DLL may be missing, incompatible, or blocked. Verify the application, repair its runtimes, and inspect Event Viewer or a dependency-analysis report.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will SFC fix this error?

Usually not directly. SFC repairs Windows components, while this DLL normally belongs to a game or application. Run DISM first and SFC second only after application repair or when other Windows symptoms are present.
