Which fix applies to you
Use this checklist to choose the right path:
- Several programs fail: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- Only one application or game fails: repair, verify, or reinstall that application.
- The error began after an update or upgrade: install pending updates, then consider System Restore or Windows repair reinstall.
- The application is old or Windows is unsupported: check the Windows build with
winverand compare it with the application requirements. - Windows Security recently detected a file: check Protection history before restoring anything.
- The error mentions a file inside the application folder: remove any untrusted manually copied DLL and repair the application.
- A 32-bit application fails on 64-bit Windows: check both the application architecture and the Windows system-file locations.
Do not begin by copying this DLL from a download site.

What api-ms-win-core-threadpool-l1-2-0.dll is
This filename identifies a genuine Microsoft Windows API-set contract. It exposes Windows thread-pool functions, including APIs for creating thread pools, work items, timers, callbacks, and cleanup operations. Microsoft documents these APIs as available beginning with Windows 10 version 10.0.10240 in its Windows API reference.
An API-set contract is not the same thing as an ordinary application DLL. Windows uses API-set names as loader-facing contracts and routes them to the underlying system implementation. Microsoft explains this architecture in its documentation about Windows API sets.

- Stay in touch with friends and family with Microsoft Teams, which can be seamlessly integrated into your taskbar. (1)
That distinction matters. This is not established as a Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX file, .NET file, game-middleware file, or driver file. Reinstalling one of those packages is not the normal first repair for this particular error.
What the error means
You may see messages such as:
The program can't start because api-ms-win-core-threadpool-l1-2-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
Other Windows loader messages may say:
api-ms-win-core-threadpool-l1-2-0.dll was not found
The code execution cannot proceed because api-ms-win-core-threadpool-l1-2-0.dll was not found.
api-ms-win-core-threadpool-l1-2-0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
The exact wording depends on the application, Windows build, loader status, and the damaged or incompatible component. The named file is not always the entire cause. A dependent DLL, application manifest, incompatible Windows build, or wrong-bitness module can produce an error that points at this API-set contract.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair system files
This is the safest starting point when more than one program fails or the file appears absent from the Windows system directories.
Install pending updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer.
- Try the affected program again.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the updates.
- Restart and test the application.
Windows 10 reached the end of free support on October 14, 2025. If the computer is running an old Windows 10 build, the correct solution may be a supported operating-system upgrade or repair path rather than a replacement DLL. Microsoft’s update instructions are available on its Windows Update support page.
Run DISM and SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait until DISM finishes.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for the verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Run DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its repair source. Microsoft documents both commands in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
If DISM reports that it cannot obtain the required repair files, run Windows Update again and retry. Microsoft also documents using a valid installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess. Do not guess at a source path from an unrelated Windows installation.
Repeatedly running SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and DISM plus SFC remain the built-in repair path.

What success looks like: the application starts normally after the restart, or SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files. If Windows repairs files but the same application still fails, continue with the application-specific steps below.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program fails, the application installation is more likely to be damaged than the whole operating system.
Use Windows application repair
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Click the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Test the program.
Not every desktop application provides these options. For a traditional desktop program:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected program.
- Select Repair or Change.
- Complete the installer prompts.
- Restart if requested.
Microsoft describes these procedures in Repair apps and programs in Windows.

For a game, open its official launcher and use Verify, Scan and repair, or the equivalent file-checking command. The exact name depends on the publisher. If repair does not help, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or launcher.
Do not assume that the application supplied the API-set contract. Reinstalling the application repairs its files and configuration; Windows itself still needs to be repaired with Windows Update, DISM, or SFC when system components are damaged.
Fix 3: Check Windows compatibility and architecture
The documented thread-pool APIs associated with this contract begin at Windows 10 version 10.0.10240. An application built against a newer Windows API may fail on an older or unsupported Windows release.
Check your build:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
- Note the Windows edition and version.
- Compare them with the application’s official system requirements.
If the application requires a newer Windows version, update Windows or install an application release that supports the current system.
On supported 64-bit Windows installations, native 64-bit system components are normally associated with:
%windir%System32
32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows are normally associated with:
%windir%SysWOW64
These names are counterintuitive, but they are part of Windows’ WOW64 architecture. Microsoft explains the behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.
A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit dependencies, while a 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit dependencies. A file existing in System32 does not prove that it is valid, correctly signed, or usable by the process that failed.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not delete or replace files in System32 or `SysWOW64. Do not copy a DLL between those folders or into the application directory.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a damaged or suspicious file, although restoring a quarantined item is not automatically safe.

In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection to see its path and status.
Only restore a file after confirming its original path, checking the application’s authenticity, and determining that the detection is a false positive. Do not choose Allow on device merely because the application will not launch. Microsoft documents these actions in Protection History in Windows Security.
If the file was in an application folder, reinstall the application from its official source instead of restoring an untrusted copy. If Windows system files were affected, run a full security scan followed by DISM and SFC.
Fix 5: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
This DLL is not identified as a driver file. Driver updates are relevant only when the problem began after a hardware change, Windows upgrade, or driver installation, or when Device Manager reports a device problem.
Check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected hardware.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Check the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or uninstall the faulty device and restart Windows if the hardware vendor’s instructions require it.
Prefer drivers from the computer, motherboard, or hardware manufacturer. Do not install a random driver package merely because a DLL error appeared.
Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies stale drivers, while installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.
What success looks like: Device Manager no longer reports a device error and the application launches. If there are no device warnings, return to the Windows repair and application branches.

Do not run:
regsvr32 api-ms-win-core-threadpool-l1-2-0.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. An API-set contract is a loader-facing Windows component, not an ordinary COM server. The command may produce a DllRegisterServer error and will not repair Windows component integrity.
Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference and explains the required self-registration interface in its self-registration documentation.
Do not download the DLL manually
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a file that creates DLL-preloading risk. Copying a file into the application folder may also hide the real problem while allowing an unsafe directory to take priority in the DLL search order. Microsoft documents these security concerns in Dynamic-link library search order.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the official application installer, and official Microsoft redistributables only when the error identifies those packages.
The Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015–2022 is appropriate when the application reports files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll, or when its publisher lists the runtime as a prerequisite. It is not identified as the source of api-ms-win-core-threadpool-l1-2-0.dll. Microsoft provides the official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.

Fix 6: Use System Restore or Windows repair reinstall
If the problem started immediately after an update, upgrade, or system change:
- Back up important files.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart.
System Restore rolls back system files and settings without normally removing personal files. Microsoft lists this and other recovery choices in Recovery options in Windows.
On eligible Windows 11 systems, use the repair reinstall option:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft explains the process in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.
A clean Windows reinstall is a last resort, not the first response to a DLL message.
FAQ
Is this a Microsoft file?
It is a Microsoft Windows API-set contract used by the Windows loader. It is not established as a standalone third-party runtime file.
Does it belong to Visual C++ Redistributable?
No. Reinstall Visual C++ only when the application also reports Visual C++ runtime files or explicitly requires that package.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Where should it be located?
On 64-bit Windows, relevant native and 32-bit system components are normally separated between System32 and SysWOW64. The exact file layout can vary by Windows build. Do not use a visible file as proof that it is valid.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
No. API-set contracts are not ordinary self-registering COM DLLs.
Why does the error appear when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to use the contract because of an incompatible Windows build, damaged component store, dependent DLL, application manifest, wrong architecture, or an incorrect local DLL copy.
What should I provide if the error remains?
Record the Windows edition and build from winver, application name and version, exact error text, path shown in the message, whether one or several programs fail, and whether the issue began after an update or security event. Also record the DISM and SFC results and any relevant Event Viewer entry.
