Windows may display: “The program can’t start because rtmmvras.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” Other reports say rtmmvras.dll was not found, could not be located, or could not be loaded.
The 60-second answer is simple: rtmmvras.dll belongs to the Microsoft Skype for Business/Lync media components, not to Windows itself. Repair the Office installation that contains Skype for Business, or reinstall standalone Skype for Business using the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

What rtmmvras.dll is
rtmmvras.dll is a Microsoft component commonly identified as Microsoft Real Time Media Office AirSpace Video Renderer. Its role is related to video rendering in Skype for Business and the older Lync client.
Microsoft servicing records list it as Lync.rtmmvras.dll or Rtmmvras.dll in Skype for Business 2016 packages. Microsoft’s June 2024 Skype for Business 2016 update lists version 6.0.8968.694 for both x86 and x64 package entries. That does not mean every installation should contain that exact build. Office edition, installation technology, architecture, and servicing level affect the correct file.

This is not established as a Windows system DLL. Do not treat it like a file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The application named in the error is often lync.exe, Skype for Business, or an Office-related process.
Why the error appears
The usual causes are:
- An incomplete or damaged Office or Skype for Business installation
- An interrupted Skype for Business or Office update
- A 32-bit and 64-bit architecture mismatch
- Antivirus or endpoint-security quarantine
- Multiple Office generations or Click-to-Run and MSI components being mixed
- A failed uninstall, cleanup operation, or partial migration
- A damaged or fake copy of the DLL in an unexpected directory
- Less commonly, broader Windows component corruption
The most likely cause is a damaged or incomplete installation. Replacing one DLL rarely repairs the matching media stack and can leave other Lync files at incompatible versions.
Fix 1: Repair Office first
Use this fix when Skype for Business was installed with Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Close Skype for Business and all Office programs.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps. On some Windows versions, this is Apps & features.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or the Office edition that installed Skype for Business.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Modify.
- Approve the administrator prompt.
- Choose Quick Repair, then select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Skype for Business.
If the error remains, repeat the process and choose Online Repair instead. Online Repair replaces more of the Office installation and normally requires an internet connection. It may also reset Office components, so record any business deployment or account details before using it.
Microsoft’s Office repair guidance covers the current repair choices. Exact labels can vary between Windows and Office versions.
If Windows components also show errors and you are repeatedly hunting through SFC and DISM output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems and show what needs attention; repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and repairing or reinstalling the owning Office or Skype for Business installation remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 2: Reinstall standalone Skype for Business
Use this procedure when Skype for Business was installed separately rather than as part of the Office installation.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Skype for Business.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Download Skype for Business from Microsoft’s official Skype for Business installation page.
- Choose the same architecture as the existing Office installation.
- Complete the installation, restart Windows, and launch Skype for Business.
Do not install an x86 Skype component beside x64 Office unless Microsoft’s deployment instructions specifically require that arrangement. In normal use, the Office and Skype for Business architectures should match.
If you cannot tell which architecture is installed, open Word or another Office application and select:
File > Account > About Word
or
File > Account > About [application]
The dialog identifies whether Office is 32-bit or 64-bit. The application named in the error is also important. If it names lync.exe, repair or reinstall the Lync/Skype for Business component rather than another unrelated application.

Before restoring anything from quarantine, establish whether the file is actually missing.
- Note the full error message and the executable it names.
- Search the existing Office and Skype for Business installation folders for
rtmmvras.dll. - Right-click any matching file and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
- Open your antivirus or endpoint-security application.
- Review Quarantine, Protection history, or Detection history.
- Look for a record involving
rtmmvras.dll,lync.exe, or the Office installation.
Restore the file only when the security product identifies it as a false positive and the file is from the expected Microsoft installation. Then run Office repair or reinstall Skype for Business so the complete, matching component set is restored.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to obtain a DLL. If the file exists in a temporary folder, user-profile directory, or unrelated application directory, do not assume it is genuine because the name looks correct.
Fix 4: Complete Office and Skype for Business updates
An interrupted update can leave the executable and media files at different servicing levels.

- Open an Office application.
- Select File > Account.
- Select Update Options > Update Now, if available.
- Allow the update to finish completely.
- Restart Windows again and test Skype for Business.
Microsoft’s Skype for Business 2016 update history currently lists KB5002567, dated June 4, 2024, as the latest listed update for that product line. Enterprise deployment channels may follow different servicing schedules.
Do not combine rtmmvras.dll from one Skype for Business build with Lync files from another build. A file can be the correct Microsoft file and still be wrong for the installation around it.
Fix 5: Consider graphics drivers only for broader media failures
A graphics driver is not the normal fix for a missing rtmmvras.dll. Update or reinstall one only if Skype for Business also has video crashes, black previews, display corruption, or other graphics-related symptoms.
To check the driver manually:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
You can also select Uninstall device, restart, and let Windows rediscover the adapter, but do this only when you have a supported driver available and understand the recovery procedure.

If identifying the correct graphics driver means hunting through multiple manufacturers and hardware revisions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; driver installation is handled by the full version. This is optional, and reinstalling the Skype for Business or Office component is still the direct fix for rtmmvras.dll.
Fix 6: Use SFC and DISM only for Windows corruption
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They are not the primary way to restore an Office-owned Skype for Business DLL, so use them when Windows has other corruption symptoms or an Office repair reports system-image problems.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test Skype for Business.
Microsoft documents this process in its SFC and DISM guidance.
If both commands complete successfully but the error remains, return to Office Repair or the standalone Skype for Business installer. A successful Windows scan does not prove that the Office media stack is intact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not register or manually copy the DLL
regsvr32 rtmmvras.dll is not a general missing-DLL repair. regsvr32 applies to DLLs designed to expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft explains this limitation in its regsvr32 documentation.
Running it against a media component may produce an error without changing the real problem. It will not correct a missing dependency, wrong architecture, damaged Office installation, or mismatched Lync build.
Also avoid:
- Copying the file into
System32 - Copying it into
SysWOW64 - Copying a 32-bit file into a 64-bit installation or the reverse
- Using registry cleaners or automatic DLL repair utilities
- Mixing files from different Office generations
- Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without an error that specifically identifies one of those runtimes
- Toggling Windows Features in the hope that it will install Skype for Business
Random DLL downloads are unsafe because the file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, use the wrong version, or omit required dependencies. They also leave the damaged Office installation untouched. Use Microsoft’s Office repair tools, the official Skype for Business installer, and Microsoft servicing channels instead.

If the error still returns
If repair works temporarily and the message returns, check these possibilities:
- Security software removes the file again. Review quarantine history immediately after the next failure.
- Office updates are failing. Check Office update status and complete pending restarts.
- A stale shortcut starts an old Lync copy. Check the shortcut’s target and the executable named by the dialog.
- Multiple Office installations conflict. Repair or remove the intended installation rather than replacing individual files.
- The file is present but cannot load. Suspect corruption, an architecture mismatch, or a dependent DLL from a different build.
- The installation is badly damaged. Record your account, license, and business deployment details, then remove and reinstall the intended Office or Skype for Business product.
System Restore is a last resort when the failure began immediately after a known system change and repair or reinstallation is unavailable. It can roll back other software and configuration changes and does not replace a proper Office or Skype for Business reinstall.
When escalating the problem, collect:
- The exact error text
- The executable named in the dialog, such as
lync.exe - Your Office edition
- Whether Office and Skype for Business are 32-bit or 64-bit
- The file’s current path, if it exists
- Antivirus quarantine or detection details
- Relevant Event Viewer entries
- The update, uninstall, repair, or migration that preceded the failure
FAQ
Is rtmmvras.dll a Windows system file?
No. Available Microsoft servicing records associate it with Skype for Business and the Lync component set. It should not be downloaded into a Windows system directory.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a direct fix for this error. Those runtimes may matter when a complete error specifically names them, but rtmmvras.dll is normally restored by repairing or reinstalling Skype for Business or Office.
Does the exact DLL version matter?
Yes. Microsoft records show multiple historical builds, and the correct file depends on the Office or Skype for Business installation and architecture. There is no single universal file size or download that fits every computer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the message mention lync.exe?
lync.exe is the executable associated with the Lync and Skype for Business client. Its appearance usually confirms that the missing component belongs to that client installation.
What is the safest fix?
Run Office Online Repair when Skype for Business came with Office. Reinstall standalone Skype for Business from Microsoft when it was installed separately, matching the existing Office architecture.
