“The program can’t start because api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.”

api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll is a Windows API-set contract, not a normal third-party runtime DLL that you should download and copy into a system folder. The safest repair is to determine whether Windows is damaged, the application is incompatible, or the application installation is incomplete.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Which fix applies to you

Use the situation that best matches what you see:

  • Several applications show missing Windows DLL errors: repair Windows components with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
  • Only one newer application fails on an older Windows installation: check whether that program supports your version of Windows.
  • The problem began after installing or updating one program: repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
  • The error appeared after an antivirus detection: check Windows Security Protection History before restoring anything.
  • The problem began after a failed update, disk migration, cloning operation, or system repair: treat it as possible component-store or system-file corruption.
  • A device, driver, or older application is involved: update Windows and the relevant driver, but do not replace this API-set name manually.

Do not begin by searching for a replacement DLL. That approach commonly produces the wrong architecture, an altered file, or a file that does nothing because the name is a loader alias.

What api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll actually is

Microsoft classifies this name as an API-set contract. API sets let Windows applications import a stable contract name while Windows maps that contract to the physical implementation internally. The contract may not have an identically named file anywhere on the computer. Microsoft explains this behavior in its Windows API sets documentation.

The versionansi portion refers to ANSI versions of Windows file-version information functions. Microsoft maps this API set to:

  • GetFileVersionInfoExA
  • GetFileVersionInfoSizeExA
  • VerQueryValueA

Microsoft lists these APIs as available through this API set from Windows build 10.0.16299 onward in its Win32 API table.

That does not mean you should expect a conventional file with this exact name in System32 or SysWOW64. There is no reliable universal file size, hash, physical path, or standalone download package for this contract.

Error messages you may see

Windows or an application may display one of these loader patterns:

  • “The program can’t start because api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “A required component is missing: api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll.”

These messages identify a dependency-loading failure. They do not prove that a standalone DLL with this exact name has been deleted. A program can report a missing API-set contract when Windows is damaged, when the application targets a newer Windows API surface, or when an installer incorrectly treats the contract as an ordinary redistributable file.

Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC

This is the correct first repair when multiple programs are affected or Windows began behaving badly after an interrupted update, disk migration, failed clone, or system repair.

Install pending Windows updates

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart when Windows requests it.
  6. Check for updates again until none remain.
  7. Try the affected application.

If the error remains, repair the component store.

Run DISM, then SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected program again.

Microsoft specifically directs users to run DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM says that repair files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source. Replace the example path with the actual source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

The repair source must match the installed Windows version closely enough for servicing to use it. Do not download a random folder from another computer.

Repeatedly running SFC without checking what changed is not a diagnosis. If you want help identifying outdated or damaged system components, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems, while its full version performs the repair; Windows Update and Microsoft’s DISM/SFC tools remain the appropriate manual path.

Fix 2: Check whether the application supports Windows

If only one program fails, especially a recently installed or updated program, the application may have been compiled against a newer Windows API surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check your Windows build

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
winver
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Record the Windows edition and build shown in the window.

Now check the application’s official system requirements. If it requires a newer Windows release, update Windows to a supported release if your hardware permits it. Otherwise, install an older version of the application only if its developer officially supports that version on your current Windows installation.

Do not attempt to make an unsupported program work by copying an API-set DLL from another computer. That does not add the missing operating-system APIs and can create additional loader problems.

Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the affected application

A damaged application installation can produce dependency errors even when Windows itself is healthy.

  1. Save your work and close the affected program.
  2. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  3. Select Apps.
  4. Select Installed apps.
  5. Find the affected application.
  6. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  7. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  8. Select Repair and follow the prompts.
  9. Restart the application.

If there is no Repair option, download the installer from the application developer or vendor and reinstall the program. If the program is a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity function first.

For software associated with National Instruments, LabWindows/CVI, or TestStand, dependency reports can include this API-set name. That identifies a Windows dependency, but it does not establish one universal product-specific fix. Repair the particular NI or vendor installation and confirm that its supported Windows version matches your system.

If reinstalling the application fixes the error while other programs remain normal, the application installation was the more likely cause.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine or remove a legitimate file involved in a Windows or application installation.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security.
  3. Open it.
  4. Select Virus & threat protection.
  5. Select Protection history.
  6. Review recent detections.
  7. Expand any entry related to the affected application or Windows components.

Do not restore a file solely because its name resembles a system file. Confirm the detection’s location, publisher, and relationship to a trusted Windows or vendor installation. Microsoft describes the risks of allowing detected files in its Protection History guidance.

If a trusted application was quarantined, update the application from its official installer and contact the vendor if the detection returns. Do not disable antivirus protection indefinitely to force an application to start.

Fix 5: Update related drivers only when the timing points there

A graphics or device driver is not the normal source of this API-set contract. Driver work is relevant when the failure began immediately after a hardware change, system migration, or driver installation, or when Device Manager shows a related device problem.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Look for devices with a yellow warning icon.
  4. Expand the category related to the failing application or hardware.
  5. Right-click the device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a recently updated driver, right-click the device, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that option is available and the timing clearly connects the update to the failure.

If you are manually hunting through many hardware pages and cannot tell which driver changed, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; driver installation is performed by the full version. It is optional, and updating the correct driver from the hardware or PC manufacturer remains the safer choice when you know which device is involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Use Windows Features only for a named feature

Opening Windows Features will not normally restore this API-set contract, but it can help when the error belongs to an application that explicitly requires a Windows optional feature.

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the feature named in the application’s official requirements.
  3. Enable it only if the application requires it.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.

Do not randomly enable legacy components, .NET versions, or compatibility features as a substitute for identifying the failing application. This filename is not a Visual C++ Redistributable component, DirectX component, or COM library.

What not to do

Do not download the DLL from a file archive

Random DLL sites can provide malware, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong process architecture. Manual copying may not help because this name can be an API-set alias rather than a physical DLL.

Safe sources are:

  • Windows Update
  • Windows component repair using DISM and SFC
  • Matching Windows installation media
  • The official installer for the affected application
  • The application or hardware vendor’s official support page

Do not copy files between System32 and SysWOW64

On 64-bit Windows, those folders serve different process architectures. An API-set contract is loader-managed and is not a freely interchangeable x86 or x64 file. Copying files between these folders can damage a working installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run regsvr32

regsvr32 is for DLLs that implement the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. An API-set contract is a loader dependency, not a library that needs self-registration. Running this command against a missing or unsuitable file cannot repair Windows.

Do not install unrelated runtimes

Install the Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime such as VCRUNTIME or MSVCP. Use a DirectX installer only when the error names a DirectX component.

If the error still remains

If DISM and SFC finish without resolving the issue:

  1. Record the complete error text.
  2. Record the executable name that fails.
  3. Run winver and note the Windows build.
  4. Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit in Settings → System → About.
  5. Test another program.
  6. Check Windows Security Protection History.
  7. Check whether the failure started after an update, migration, driver change, or installation.

If the failure began immediately after a system change and a restore point exists, use System Restore:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Create a restore point.
  3. Open the result.
  4. Select System Restore.
  5. Choose a restore point from before the failure.
  6. Follow the wizard and restart.

Microsoft explains what System Restore changes in its point-in-time restore guidance.

For persistent Windows-wide corruption, consider an in-place Windows repair installation that preserves files and applications. If only one application fails after Windows repair, contact that application’s vendor and provide the executable name, Windows build, and full dependency error.

FAQ

Is api-ms-win-core-versionansi-l1-1-0.dll a virus?

The name itself is a Microsoft Windows API-set contract. A suspicious file claiming to use this name can still be fake, so rely on Windows servicing and trusted installers rather than a downloaded replacement.

Does this file belong to the Visual C++ Redistributable?

No. This is part of the Windows API surface. Installing Visual C++ is relevant only when the error names a Visual C++ runtime DLL.

Should I look for it in System32?

Not necessarily. API-set contracts can be virtual aliases and may not exist as identically named physical files.

Can SFC fix the error?

SFC can repair protected Windows system files when corruption is the cause. It cannot make an application compatible with an unsupported Windows release or repair a broken third-party installation.

Why does only one program report the error?

That usually points toward an application compatibility or installation problem, although that single program may also be using a Windows API that the current operating system does not provide.

Is a 32-bit application affected differently?

A 32-bit application has different dependency resolution from a 64-bit application, but this does not make manual copying safe. Let Windows’ loader and the application’s official installer handle the correct architecture.
