Metacritic’s captured critic aggregates are 78/100 for PC and 76/100 for PS4; those close scores suggest broadly similar reception, not a meaningful verdict that one platform plays better.
What is Apotheon?
Apotheon is a 2D action/adventure game set in Ancient Greek mythology. The player becomes humanity’s champion in a confrontation with the Olympian gods, journeying through the land of the dead and Mount Olympus. Steam identifies Alientrap as both developer and publisher and gives the release date as February 3, 2015.
The game combines exploration and combat with ancient weapons and a heroic single-player story. Steam also lists local one-versus-one multiplayer. The publisher’s Steam description calls it “a heroic action game set within the vibrant world of Ancient Greek Mythology.” Steam’s Apotheon listing and the official Apotheon site describe the premise and setting.
What do critics think of Apotheon?
Metacritic’s PC page records a 78/100 Metascore from 30 critic reviews: 22 positive, eight mixed, and zero negative. Its PS4 page records 76/100 from 26 reviews: 19 positive, seven mixed, and zero negative. These are platform-specific aggregates captured in October 2026, reflecting the reviews listed on those pages rather than every critic’s opinion.

What critics praised
Distinctive Greek-inspired art
The clearest recurring strength is Apotheon’s visual identity. Critics highlighted its pottery-inspired presentation and arresting imagery, which make the mythological world feel deliberately stylized rather than like a conventional fantasy setting. If the art and subject matter are a major part of what you want from a game, this is its strongest case.

Setting and exploration
Review excerpts also praise the integration of Greek mythology, atmosphere, and a varied world to explore. Metacritic’s PC page, for example, includes a Destructoid excerpt that commends exploration alongside combat, while a Pelit excerpt recognizes the visual style and mythological integration. Those are examples from individual reviews, not a claim that every critic agreed.
Where the reception is more mixed
Combat can be satisfying, but may feel repetitive
The reviews do not describe combat in one uniform way. A PC excerpt from Destructoid praises rewarding combat while also observing that it changes little; Pelit’s excerpt flags flaws in the combat. PS4 excerpts likewise mention problems in close-quarters encounters. Taken together, the criticism is a reason to temper expectations if combat depth is your main priority, rather than evidence that every player will find the fighting unsatisfying.

Controls, physics, and platforming
Some PS4 review excerpts raise concerns about controls and physics, while broader review coverage also points to platforming as a possible weak spot. These are reported criticisms, not a universal finding or a measure of how often players encounter them. Readers especially sensitive to precise movement may want to weigh that caveat against the game’s visual and exploratory strengths.
Multiplayer is not the main draw
Steam lists local one-versus-one play, but the game is also built around its single-player story. A PS4 review excerpt criticizes multiplayer, so the critic evidence gives less reason to choose Apotheon primarily for competitive play than for its solo adventure.

Is Apotheon different on PC and PS4?
The available comparison is chiefly about critic reception: Metacritic reports 78/100 from 30 PC reviews and 76/100 from 26 PS4 reviews. That small aggregate spread is not proof of a meaningful quality or performance advantage on either platform. The cited review pages do not establish a technical head-to-head comparison, so these scores should not be used to infer frame rates, resolution, or control superiority.
Is Apotheon worth playing?
It is a stronger fit for players drawn to stylized art, Greek mythology, atmosphere, and exploration than for those seeking consistently deep combat or a multiplayer-first game. The favorable critic aggregates support giving it a look, while the recurring caveats explain why the reception is positive rather than unanimous. Choose it for the distinctive world and single-player journey, with the understanding that combat and movement are less universally praised.
