Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsappbarcom.dll is usually a legacy CyberLink PowerDVD component, not a Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing, not found, corrupted, or cannot be loaded, repair the PowerDVD installation that originally supplied it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What appbarcom.dll is
The file is described as AppBarCom Module. Historical file paths place it in a PowerDVD installation directory similar to:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
C:Program FilesCyberLinkPowerDVDAppBarCom.dll
That location matters. appbarcom.dll is not a standard Windows component, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or device-driver file. It normally belongs beside the PowerDVD executable and its other program files.
Public historical listings commonly describe the file as an older 32-bit module, but the available version, size, architecture, publisher, and signing information is inconsistent and is not current CyberLink documentation. Do not treat catalog values as proof that a particular downloaded copy is genuine.

Also, do not confuse appbarcom.dll with appbarcom_res.dll. The similarly named resource file is a separate PowerDVD component.
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Correct direction |
|---|---|---|
| Missing immediately when PowerDVD starts | Damaged or incomplete PowerDVD installation | Repair or reinstall the same PowerDVD edition |
| Error after antivirus activity | The file may be quarantined | Check Protection history before restoring anything |
| “Specified module could not be found” while the file exists | A dependency may be missing | Reinstall PowerDVD and its neighboring files |
| Error at Windows startup after uninstalling PowerDVD | A stale startup reference remains | Remove the obsolete startup entry |
| Bad-image or incompatible-file message | Wrong architecture or damaged file | Restore the file through the correct installer |
First, identify which program is asking for the file
Before changing anything, confirm that PowerDVD is actually the application involved.
- Read the title bar of the error dialog.
- Close the message and check which program was launching.
- Right-click the shortcut that starts the program and select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target and Start in.
- In Task Manager, open Details and watch which executable appears immediately before the error.
- Search Settings > Apps > Installed apps for PowerDVD. On older Windows installations, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features instead.
If the error is generated by an unrelated legacy application, do not assume that PowerDVD is the answer. The filename strongly points to PowerDVD, but the public evidence does not prove that every copy of appbarcom.dll belongs to CyberLink.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If PowerDVD is no longer installed and the error appears only during startup, open Task Manager > Startup apps. Disable an obsolete PowerDVD entry, restart Windows, and check whether the message disappears. For more persistent entries, inspect Task Scheduler for a task pointing to a removed PowerDVD directory. Do not delete unfamiliar tasks until you have confirmed their file path.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the correct PowerDVD edition
This is the safest and most likely solution because the DLL is part of a group of application files. A clean installer can restore appbarcom.dll, its dependencies, registry settings, shortcuts, and compatible supporting files together.
Try the built-in repair option
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find CyberLink PowerDVD.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows after the repair completes.
- Launch PowerDVD from its installed shortcut.
If Windows does not offer Repair, open Control Panel > Programs and Features, select PowerDVD, and look for Change, Modify, or Repair.
A successful repair should allow PowerDVD to launch without the appbarcom.dll message. It should also leave the file in the PowerDVD program directory rather than copying it into a Windows system folder.

Reinstall PowerDVD from an official source
If repair is unavailable or does not work:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected PowerDVD edition.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from CyberLink’s official support and download system.
- If PowerDVD came bundled with a computer or optical drive, use the manufacturer’s recovery media or supplied OEM installer instead of a retail installer.
- Install the same edition that was previously installed.
- Restart Windows again.
- Apply the latest compatible update offered for that edition.
- Launch PowerDVD and test the original shortcut.
OEM and bundled editions can follow a different update path from retail editions. CyberLink may direct bundled users to the product’s About > Upgrade dialog rather than a normal retail update page.
Do not assume that the newest PowerDVD installer contains a file from an old release. Older editions can have different files, dependencies, licensing components, and supported operating systems.

If the uninstaller is missing
If PowerDVD appears in the installed-program list but its uninstaller fails:
- Restart Windows and try the uninstall again.
- Check whether security software is blocking the uninstaller.
- Use the original PowerDVD installer and select Repair or Remove, if offered.
- Reinstall the same edition over the existing installation.
- Restart and test PowerDVD.
Avoid registry cleaners and manual deletion of random CyberLink folders. Removing files by hand can leave a stale shortcut or startup entry while making a proper reinstall harder.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old application file. That does not automatically mean the file was malicious, and it does not prove a false positive either. Verify its origin before restoring it.
Check Windows Security Protection history
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the PowerDVD error began.
- Expand any entry that names
appbarcom.dll. - Check the detected path.
A file located inside the known PowerDVD installation directory is more consistent with the expected provenance than a copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, a startup directory, or System32.
If you have verified that the file came from the genuine PowerDVD installer or original OEM media, follow Windows Security’s restore workflow. Microsoft warns that Defender may detect the item again unless it is explicitly allowed. Do not restore an unverified copy and do not create a broad exclusion for an entire drive or C:Windows.
After restoring a verified file, reinstalling PowerDVD is still preferable because quarantine may have removed related files or dependencies.
If the file is found outside the PowerDVD folder, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. When malware is plausible, use Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Save open work first because Windows restarts during an offline scan.
Fix 3: Check for a wrong installation or architecture mismatch
A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit DLL and compatible dependencies. The operating system’s System32 and SysWOW64 names are confusing, so do not use those folders as a manual DLL drop location.
Check the installation path:
- Right-click the PowerDVD shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the executable path on the Shortcut tab.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Confirm that the program files and
appbarcom.dllbelong to the same PowerDVD installation.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer, another PowerDVD edition, or an online archive. A filename match does not guarantee matching architecture, dependencies, build, or integrity.

Fix 4: Understand “module could not be found”
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that appbarcom.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load a dependency required by it.
This commonly happens after:
- An incomplete uninstall
- A partial reinstall
- Antivirus removal of a neighboring file
- Restoring an old system image
- Mixing files from different PowerDVD editions
- A damaged application directory
The practical fix is still to repair or reinstall the complete PowerDVD installation. Replacing only the named DLL can leave the missing dependency untouched.
If reinstalling does not help, record:
- The exact error text
- The PowerDVD edition shown in its installer or About screen
- The Windows version
- The full path to the executable
- Whether
appbarcom.dllexists in that directory - Whether antivirus reported or removed anything
Give those details to CyberLink support rather than repeatedly replacing individual files.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is affected
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They normally do not recreate a private third-party PowerDVD DLL, so they are not the primary solution for appbarcom.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use them when other Windows features or unrelated system programs are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test PowerDVD again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected system files against Windows’ repair sources. If both commands complete successfully but PowerDVD still reports the DLL error, return to the PowerDVD repair or reinstall path.
Manually repeating SFC and DISM can be tedious when you do not know which Windows components changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems and show what needs attention; repairs are handled by its full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling PowerDVD when that is the actual source of the missing file.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
If the problem began immediately after a failed update, cleanup operation, or software installation, System Restore may return application settings and files to an earlier state.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point created before the error appeared.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the applications, drivers, and updates that will be affected.
- Continue only if the changes are acceptable.
- Restart Windows and test PowerDVD.
System Restore can remove later applications, settings, and updates. It is not a replacement for reinstalling PowerDVD, and it should not be used blindly.

Fix 7: Update related drivers only when the symptoms point there
A graphics or audio driver is not the normal source of appbarcom.dll. This is an application DLL, not a device-driver file. Driver work becomes relevant only if PowerDVD also crashes during video playback, loses hardware acceleration, or shows broader graphics and audio failures.
For a graphics driver:
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For audio problems, repeat the process under Sound, video and game controllers.
Do not use Device Manager to hunt for appbarcom.dll, and do not expect a driver update to restore it. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers and shows the scan results before installation; the full version performs the driver installation, while PowerDVD reinstallation remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Why Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET are not the first fix
PowerDVD may use common runtimes, but the error identifies a legacy application component rather than a missing Microsoft runtime. Installing random runtime packages can add unnecessary software without restoring the correct PowerDVD file.
Use Microsoft runtime repair only when:
- PowerDVD’s installer explicitly requires it
- The error names a runtime DLL
- Several applications report runtime failures
- CyberLink’s installation instructions identify the dependency
Otherwise, repair or reinstall PowerDVD first. The installer is responsible for placing the right files in the right directory.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run this merely because the filename ends in .dll:
regsvr32 appbarcom.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that appbarcom.dll requires COM registration.

A registration error does not prove that the DLL is missing or corrupt. Reinstall the application unless CyberLink specifically instructs you to register a component.
What not to do
Do not download a random DLL
Avoid DLL download archives and file-replacement utilities. A copied DLL can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, belong to a different PowerDVD release, lack required dependencies, or simply move the error to the next missing file.
The safe sources are:
- CyberLink’s official support and download system
- The original PowerDVD installation media
- The computer or optical-drive manufacturer’s OEM recovery media
- A verified backup of your own original installation
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
PowerDVD normally loads private components from its own installation directory. Copying the file into a Windows system directory can create conflicts, hide the real installation problem, and expose unrelated programs to an unverified DLL.

Do not trust a filename alone
A genuine-looking file should be located where PowerDVD installed it and should come from a known installer or verified backup. Check the file’s Properties and Digital Signatures tab if one is present, but do not treat the absence or presence of a signature as conclusive without confirming the installation source.
Frequently asked questions
Is appbarcom.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated most strongly with legacy CyberLink PowerDVD and is not documented as a standard Windows component.
Which PowerDVD version installed it?
The public record does not establish a current edition or exact PowerDVD version that always ships this file. Older retail and OEM editions can differ. Use the same installer family that originally installed PowerDVD.
Is appbarcom.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. A copy inside the expected PowerDVD directory may be legitimate, while one in a temporary, downloads, startup, or system directory deserves scanning and verification.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as the first response. This error is normally addressed by repairing the complete PowerDVD installation. Install a runtime only when the PowerDVD installer or a separate error specifically identifies it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I run regsvr32?
Usually no. There is no verified requirement for this DLL to be registered as a COM component.
Why does the error appear after PowerDVD was removed?
Windows may still be launching an old shortcut, startup entry, or scheduled task. Remove the stale reference through legitimate Windows application and startup controls.
What if reinstalling PowerDVD does not work?
Check antivirus Protection history, confirm that the shortcut launches the intended PowerDVD directory, verify that no second installation is taking priority, and record the exact executable path and error text. Then contact CyberLink support with those details.
