officeav.dll is identified as the Norton AntiVirus_Office Plug-in, a legacy component associated with Norton AntiVirus from Symantec Corporation. If Windows reports that officeav.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the Norton installation that originally supplied it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is not identified as a standard Windows system file, Microsoft Office component, DirectX file, or Visual C++ redistributable. Its name suggests integration with Microsoft Office document scanning or protection, but the exact Norton editions, paths, versions, and supported Office releases are not established.

First, confirm which program is failing

A DLL error belongs to the program that tries to load the file. The message may appear when starting Norton, an older application, or another program that used Norton integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common wording includes:

  • “The program can’t start because officeav.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “officeav.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading officeav.dll.”
  • “The specified module officeav.dll could not be found.”

Write down the application name shown in the error. If a game displays the message, that does not prove the game owns the DLL. The game may be launching an older program or installer that still expects a Norton component.

#1 Best Overall

Before making changes, close the affected application and restart Windows once. If the message returns, continue with the fixes below in order.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Norton installation

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

This is the most likely solution because officeav.dll is associated with Norton AntiVirus rather than Windows.

Try the installed Norton repair option

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Choose Installed apps on Windows 11. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
  4. Search for Norton.
  5. Select the installed Norton product.
  6. Open its available menu and look for Modify, Repair, or a similar maintenance option.
  7. Follow the Norton installer prompts.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Start the program that previously reported the error.

Exact menu names depend on the Norton edition and Windows version. Some Norton packages do not provide a repair button in Windows Settings. If no repair option appears, use Norton’s official support and removal process to remove the damaged installation, restart the computer, and install a supported Norton release from Norton’s official installer.

Do not copy officeav.dll from another computer or from a different Norton installation. A file from a different release or processor architecture can replace one error with an entry-point error, an application crash, or another missing-DLL message.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if:

  • Norton opens without a component error.
  • The affected application starts normally.
  • The officeav.dll message does not return after another restart.
  • Norton’s own security features operate normally.

If the application still fails and names another Norton DLL, the installation is probably incomplete or internally inconsistent. Remove the old Norton product completely, restart Windows, and install a supported version rather than replacing individual files.

Fix 2: Check Norton or antivirus quarantine

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

A security product may have quarantined or removed the file during a scan, update, or repair operation. Do not restore it solely because the filename appears in an error message.

Review Norton history

  1. Open the Norton application from the Start menu.
  2. Look for Security, History, Security History, Quarantine, or Detected threats.
  3. Search recent events for officeav.dll.
  4. Open the event details.
  5. Check the original file location, detection name, and action taken.
  6. Restore the file only if all of the following are true:
  7. It came from a genuine Norton installation.
  8. Its original location is consistent with the installed Norton product.
  9. Its publisher or digital signature identifies Symantec or the relevant Norton publisher.
  10. A current scan does not continue to classify it as malicious.

If Norton or another security product identifies the file as suspicious, leave it quarantined. Reinstall Norton from its official source instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the file’s publisher and location

If a copy of the file exists:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Right-click officeav.dll.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Check the Digital Signatures tab if it is present.
  5. Open the signature details and confirm that the signature is valid.
  6. Review the Details tab for the reported description, which may identify it as Norton AntiVirus_Office Plug-in.

A familiar filename is not proof of authenticity. Malware can use the name of a legitimate DLL. A file in a temporary folder, a random user-profile folder, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny.

Fix 3: Remove and reinstall Norton cleanly

Time needed: 20–45 minutes

Use this fix when repair fails, Norton’s files are mixed between releases, or the error began after an incomplete uninstall or update.

  1. Open Settings with Windows + I.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
  4. Select the Norton product.
  5. Choose Uninstall.
  6. Follow the Norton removal prompts.
  7. Restart Windows even if the uninstaller does not request it.
  8. Use Norton’s official removal guidance if the normal uninstall fails.
  9. Restart again after the official removal process completes.
  10. Install a supported Norton product from Norton’s official website.
  11. Restart Windows.
  12. Test the application that reported officeav.dll.

Do not install a legacy Norton package merely because it is the first version associated with the filename. Older Office plug-ins may not support current Windows or Office releases. If only an obsolete application requires this file, determine whether the application can operate without Norton’s Office integration or whether it should be replaced with a supported version.

If the error appears during a game launch

Use the game launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity feature only for files owned by that game. A launcher normally cannot restore a Norton DLL. If the same officeav.dll message remains after game-file verification, continue repairing the Norton installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Check Windows system files and components

Time needed: 15–40 minutes

SFC and DISM are useful when Windows itself is damaged, but they generally do not restore a third-party Norton DLL. Run them when you also see Windows repair symptoms, corrupted system components, repeated servicing errors, or unexplained application failures.

Run System File Checker

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
  6. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the affected application.

Possible results include:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM next, restart, and run SFC again.

Run DISM

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  2. Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Allow the operation to finish.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Run sfc /scannow one more time.
  4. Test the affected application.

Microsoft’s documentation for System File Checker explains the SFC process. Microsoft also documents DISM image repair.

Repeating SFC and DISM will not normally reconstruct officeav.dll, because the file is associated with Norton, not the protected Windows component store.

If you want help identifying which Windows components are damaged instead of repeatedly running commands, Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing what it detects; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling Norton remains the definitive fix for a Norton-owned DLL.

Fix 5: Check the file path and locate copies

Time needed: 5–10 minutes

The Windows where command can show whether a file exists in a directory listed in your PATH.

  1. Open Command Prompt.
  2. Run:
where officeav.dll
  1. Review any paths returned.

No result means Windows did not find the filename through the configured PATH. It does not prove that the file never existed, and it does not prove which copy an application uses.

If several copies appear, do not delete or replace them immediately. Compare each copy’s:

  1. Full path.
  2. Properties details.
  3. Digital signature.
  4. Norton installation association.
  5. Date and version information, if supplied by the file.

The application’s load path determines which DLL matters. A copy in a Norton directory is more relevant than one in a temporary folder, but location alone is not proof that the file is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Check whether the file is being blocked or removed

Time needed: 10–20 minutes

If the error returns after every repair, another security product, cleanup utility, or system-management tool may be deleting the file.

  1. Open Norton or your installed security product.
  2. Review recent quarantine and detection events.
  3. Check whether a third-party antivirus is also installed.
  4. Review that product’s quarantine and protection history.
  5. Temporarily remove conflicting security software through its official uninstall process if it is no longer needed.
  6. Restart Windows.
  7. Reinstall the legitimate Norton product.
  8. Run a full security scan.

Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion for an unverified DLL. If a file is repeatedly detected, investigate its signature and source before restoring it.

For suspected malware or an altered file, use Microsoft’s Defender support guidance and perform a full or offline scan as appropriate.

Fix 7: Check architecture and application compatibility

Time needed: 10–30 minutes

A 32-bit application generally needs a compatible 32-bit module. A 64-bit application generally cannot load a 32-bit DLL. The correct answer is not to rename the file or copy it into another system folder.

To identify the affected application:

  1. Right-click the application shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details or Compatibility information available for that application.
  4. Check the application vendor’s documentation for supported Windows architecture.
  5. Repair or reinstall the matching Norton and application versions.

Exact officeav.dll architecture variants and historical package details are not established. Do not assume that a file from Program Files is correct for every program, or that a file from Program Files (x86) can be used by a 64-bit application.

If an old Norton component works only with an older application, installing a current Norton release may not restore that obsolete integration. In that situation, remove the legacy product and investigate a supported application configuration instead of mixing files from different releases.

Fix 8: Update related software and drivers only when the error points there

Time needed: 15–45 minutes

officeav.dll is an application plug-in, not a Windows device driver. Updating a graphics, printer, scanner, or chipset driver will not normally restore it. Update drivers only when Device Manager shows a separate problem or the affected application has a documented hardware dependency.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Imaging devices, Printers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
  4. Look for a yellow warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device.
  6. Select Update driver.
  7. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if Windows installs an update.
  9. Test the application again.

Do not uninstall an unrelated device simply because the error names officeav.dll. Device Manager cannot reinstall a Norton application DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If manually checking every device and matching driver versions is taking longer than the underlying repair, Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing which drivers it detects as outdated; driver installation is handled by the full version, while Norton reinstallation remains the definitive repair for officeav.dll.

Fix 9: Do not use regsvr32 as a blind repair

Time needed: 2–5 minutes

A missing Norton plug-in is not automatically fixed by registering it. regsvr32 works only when a DLL is designed for COM self-registration and exposes the required registration entry point.

The command is:

regsvr32 officeav.dll

It may produce an error such as:

  • “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.”
  • An architecture-related registration error.
  • A message that the module could not be loaded because another dependency is missing.

Those messages do not prove that officeav.dll is corrupt. They usually mean that registration is not the correct operation for this file, or that the wrong architecture was used.

Use regsvr32 only when the Norton or application vendor specifically documents registration for the exact release and provides the correct file path. Otherwise, repair the owning Norton installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 10: Check Windows Features only for a separate compatibility requirement

Time needed: 5–15 minutes

Windows Features does not normally contain officeav.dll, and enabling a random feature will not recreate a Norton plug-in.

If the affected application separately reports that a Windows component is missing:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type:
optionalfeatures
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Review the feature named by the application’s documentation.
  3. Select it only when you know it is required.
  4. Select OK.
  5. Restart Windows if prompted.

Do not enable legacy components merely because the error contains “Office” in the filename. “Norton AntiVirus_Office Plug-in” describes Norton’s Office integration; it does not establish ownership by Microsoft Office.

Why officeav.dll may be missing

The most likely causes are:

  1. Incomplete Norton removal, repair, or update
A setup operation may have removed the plug-in without completing the replacement installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Quarantine or security removal
Norton or another security product may have isolated the file after a scan or update.

  3. Legacy compatibility
An old Norton Office integration may no longer match the current Windows, Office, or application environment.

  4. Disk or file-system corruption
Damaged storage or an interrupted installation can remove or corrupt application files.

  5. Malware or deliberate alteration
A malicious program can delete, replace, or imitate a legitimate DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. Wrong copy or wrong architecture
Several files with similar names may exist, and the application may require a specific compatible build.

What not to do

Do not download officeav.dll from a random DLL download website. The replacement may contain malware, belong to another Norton release, use the wrong architecture, lack a valid publisher signature, or fail because the underlying Norton installation is damaged.

Do not paste the DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 as a general fix. Those folders are not interchangeable storage locations for third-party application components, and changing them can create system-wide conflicts.

Do not install Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, or .NET solely because a DLL is missing. officeav.dll is not identified as one of those Microsoft runtime components. Install a runtime only when the affected application separately identifies that runtime as a requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is officeav.dll part of Windows?

It is not identified as a standard Windows system file. Verify the path and digital signature before making a final determination about any copy on the computer.

Does officeav.dll belong to Microsoft Office?

There is no supplied evidence that Microsoft Office owns this DLL. “Office Plug-in” appears to describe Norton’s integration with Office documents or related protection features.

Is officeav.dll safe?

The filename alone is insufficient. Check the file’s path, publisher signature, reported product details, and Norton installation. A file associated with a genuine Norton installation is more credible than an identically named file in an unrelated directory, but it should still be scanned.

Will Visual C++ repair it?

Normally, no. The file is identified as a Norton AntiVirus component, not a Visual C++ redistributable file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will SFC restore officeav.dll?

Normally, no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not usually restore third-party Norton application files.

Will DISM restore it?

Normally, no. DISM repairs the Windows component store and Windows images. It is useful for Windows corruption, not as the primary repair for a missing Norton plug-in.

Should I run regsvr32 officeav.dll?

Not by default. Registration applies only to DLLs that support the required COM registration entry point. Repair or reinstall Norton instead.

What if the message names another DLL after Norton is repaired?

That usually indicates a damaged, incomplete, or mismatched installation. Remove the old Norton product completely, restart Windows, and install a supported version rather than replacing DLLs one at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if I no longer use Norton?

If the error comes from an old application that still expects Norton integration, uninstall the obsolete application or remove its Norton dependency through that application’s supported configuration. Do not keep downloading individual DLLs to satisfy a legacy dependency.

Final verification checklist

Before considering the problem resolved:

  • The affected application starts after a restart.
  • Norton opens without an installation or plug-in error.
  • The file, if present, has a credible Norton or Symantec association.
  • The file’s location is consistent with the owning installation.
  • No antivirus product is repeatedly quarantining it.
  • You did not copy it from another computer or an arbitrary download site.
  • You repaired or reinstalled the Norton product as a complete package.
  • You tested the correct 32-bit or 64-bit application environment.
  • SFC and DISM were treated as Windows repair tools, not Norton file restorers.
  • Any remaining error identifies the actual program that still needs repair.
