appinfo.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system file, and its absence can break administrator prompts, installers, Control Panel tools, and other elevated applications. If Windows reports that appinfo.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows and check the Application Information service before attempting to reinstall any application.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files. Windows redirects 32-bit processes to the 32-bit system directory, normally SysWOW64. Do not copy appinfo.dll between those folders.
Which error are you seeing
Common messages include:
The program can't start because appinfo.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
This application failed to start because appinfo.dll was not found.
appinfo.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.
appinfo.dll could not be loaded.
The specified module could not be found.
The “not designed to run on Windows” wording usually represents a bad-image condition such as 0xC000007B. It does not prove that appinfo.dll itself is the only damaged file. Another dependency, an architecture mismatch, or broader Windows corruption can produce the same message.

Before repairing anything, answer these questions:
- Does the error affect every action requiring administrator approval, or only one application?
- Did it begin after Windows Update, a disk clone, migration, cleanup operation, antivirus action, malware removal, or failed repair?
- Is the file mentioned from
%SystemRoot%System32, or from an application’s own folder? - Can you open an elevated Command Prompt?
- Does
appinfo.dllexist and have a valid Microsoft digital signature?
If every administrator prompt fails, treat this as a Windows service or system-file problem rather than an application problem.
Fix 1: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the best first repair when the file is missing, corrupted, quarantined, or replaced with an incompatible copy. DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies.
1. Install pending Windows updates
- Open Start and select Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not insist on a restart.
2. Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while DISM is working.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart the computer.
Test the action that previously failed, such as opening an installer or launching an elevated application. If the error is gone, the repair worked.
Microsoft documents this DISM and SFC repair sequence.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether DISM changed the component store makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the damaged Windows components involved, while its full version performs the repair; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in commands remain the direct repair path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM again.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review the CBS log at:
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
If Windows Update cannot provide the repair files, Microsoft documents using a matching repair source with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must match your Windows release and architecture. Do not substitute a random appinfo.dll from another computer.
Fix 2: Check the Application Information service
A valid appinfo.dll can still appear broken if the Application Information service is disabled or damaged. Its service name is Appinfo, and it normally starts on demand rather than remaining permanently active.

sc.exe config appinfo start= demand
sc.exe start appinfo
The space after start= is required by sc.exe.
If the service was disabled and no normal administrator action works, boot into Safe Mode:
- Hold Shift while selecting Restart from the Start menu.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Startup Settings.
- Select Restart.
- Choose Safe Mode.
- Open
services.msc. - Set Application Information to Manual and start it.
- Restart normally.
Fix 3: Verify the file instead of replacing it
Check whether the expected file exists:
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
%SystemRoot%System32
- Look for
appinfo.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Confirm that the signer is Microsoft and that Windows reports the signature as valid.
A missing file, invalid signature, or unexpected location supports the Windows-corruption diagnosis. A valid Microsoft-signed file in System32 does not prove that every dependency is healthy, but it makes a loose replacement especially inappropriate.
If the error names a copy inside an application’s installation folder, note the exact path. A specific application may have installed an incorrect private copy. Repair or reinstall that application from its official installer rather than replacing the Windows copy.

Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine and malware damage
Windows Security may quarantine a damaged or altered system file. Do not restore it automatically.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
appinfo.dll. - Check the file path and detection details.
- Restore the file only when the detection is verified as a false positive and the file is Microsoft-signed.
- Otherwise, leave it quarantined, run a full scan, and repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
If restoring the file immediately triggers another detection, stop restoring it and investigate the detection. Malware can damage or replace system files, and a restored file may not be safe merely because it has the expected filename.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a known system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, disk migration, cleanup operation, or failed repair.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the rollback.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs added after the selected restore point.

If Windows cannot start normally, enter Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore. Microsoft explains the available System Restore recovery options.
Fix 6: Repair-reinstall Windows
Use a repair reinstall when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component and System Restore is unavailable or ineffective.
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where supported. Microsoft describes this Windows 11 repair reinstall.
If that option is unavailable, use Microsoft’s official Windows 11 download page or Windows 10 download page to create or use matching installation media. Back up important files first and select the repair or upgrade option that preserves personal data when available.

Fix 7: Repair the application only when it is the actual source
If the error appears in one program and the dialog points to that program’s folder, repair the program rather than Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, then Repair if available.
- If Repair does not help, uninstall the application.
- Download its installer from the developer’s official website.
- Install the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version for your Windows installation.
Because the Windows appinfo.dll is a service component, a game or ordinary application should not replace the copy in %SystemRoot%System32.
Driver and runtime checks
A driver reinstall is not a direct fix for a Windows appinfo.dll failure. Consider drivers only if the error also names a driver or started after a hardware change.
To check drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Do not randomly reinstall Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET merely because an application reports appinfo.dll. Those packages do not provide this Windows service DLL. Reinstall them only when the error also identifies a relevant runtime file or the application’s official support instructions require them.
Searching through Device Manager for outdated hardware versions is tedious, especially when several devices are involved. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver versions, while its full version installs updates; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing Windows when appinfo.dll itself is damaged.
What not to do
Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong Windows build, architecture, language, permissions, or a modified file. A copied DLL may also leave the component store inconsistent and fail to repair the underlying service.

Do not copy between System32 and SysWOW64
The folders serve different architectures. A 32-bit and 64-bit file are not interchangeable, and copying between them can create additional errors.
Do not run regsvr32 appinfo.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration through an entry point such as DllRegisterServer. appinfo.dll is a service DLL and is not repaired by registering it. Running:
regsvr32 appinfo.dll
can produce a misleading registration error without fixing the Application Information service. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation.
FAQ
Is appinfo.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the Application Information service. A normal copy belongs under %SystemRoot%System32 and should carry a valid Microsoft signature.
Why do administrator prompts stop working?
The Appinfo service helps start applications that require elevation. If its DLL is damaged, missing, quarantined, or the service is disabled, UAC-related actions can fail.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Usually not. appinfo.dll is not supplied by either package. Repair Windows first unless the error also names a runtime or driver file.
What if appinfo.dll exists but the error remains?
Check the exact path in the error dialog. Another dependency may be failing, or the application may be loading a bad private copy. Test whether other elevated applications fail and review Event Viewer for related errors.
Which version should I download?
None. Windows versions vary by release, architecture, language, and cumulative updates. Let Windows servicing restore the matching file instead of installing historical versions manually.
When should I use Safe Mode?
Use Safe Mode when a disabled Appinfo service prevents normal elevation or when security software and startup programs interfere with repair. Use Windows Recovery Environment when Windows cannot start normally.
