sensrsvc.dll is a Microsoft Windows component associated with the Sensor Monitoring Service, also called SensrSvc. If Windows reports that sensrsvc.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows servicing before downloading a replacement DLL.
The file has historically supported sensor-related functions such as ambient-light detection, adaptive brightness, orientation, and other device sensors. It is mainly relevant on sensor-equipped laptops, tablets, and convertible computers.

Identify the file before repairing it
Public Windows file inventories associate sensrsvc.dll with Microsoft and place it in %SystemRoot%System32. Historical listings include these examples:

These are historical third-party inventory entries, not a complete compatibility table for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build. Do not use them to select a replacement file manually.

SensrSvc is loaded through svchost.exe as a Windows service component rather than being a normal application library. The exact error may still appear when an application starts if that application calls a Windows sensor function.
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because sensrsvc.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “sensrsvc.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading sensrsvc.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “There was a problem starting sensrsvc.dll.”
- “sensrsvc.dll could not be loaded.”
- “sensrsvc.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “Cannot register sensrsvc.dll.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that sensrsvc.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency, access the file, or start the service that uses it.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because a missing or damaged Windows DLL can be restored by normal component servicing.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available quality, security, and driver updates.
- Restart the computer even if Windows does not request it.
- Try the action that produced the
sensrsvc.dllerror again.
If the error began immediately after an interrupted update or failed upgrade, continue with the repair commands below. If Windows Update repeatedly fails, the component store may need repair before updates can complete.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the most appropriate repair when the message appears during startup, sign-in, sensor initialization, or a Windows feature operation.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window while it is running.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that repairs were completed.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which is the source SFC uses to restore protected files.
Run System File Checker
Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The result normally says whether Windows found no integrity violations, repaired damaged files, or found corruption it could not repair.

Restart the computer after SFC completes, then test the affected feature. If SFC says it repaired files but the error remains, run sfc /scannow once more after restarting.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, Windows Update or the component store may be damaged. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source and /LimitAccess options. The source must match the installed Windows edition and servicing state; do not guess at a source path.
Running DISM and SFC manually is useful, but it can be difficult to determine which component failed when the same repair cycle repeats. Outbyte PC Repair provides a scan that shows what it identifies; its repair functions require the full version, and it is optional rather than a requirement for repairing Windows.
Fix 3: Verify the file path and Microsoft signature
Do not assume that every file named sensrsvc.dll is genuine. The path and digital signature matter.

Check whether Windows can find it
In an administrator Command Prompt, run:
where sensrsvc.dll
dir "%windir%System32sensrsvc.dll"
A normal Windows copy is expected under the Windows directory, typically:
C:WindowsSystem32sensrsvc.dll
The actual Windows directory may use a different drive or name, so %windir% is safer than typing C:Windows manually.
A copy in a Downloads folder, temporary directory, user profile, writable application directory, or an unfamiliar game folder deserves further investigation. Do not replace it by copying another file over it.
Check the signature
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Locate
sensrsvc.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
A genuine Windows copy should show Microsoft as the signer or publisher. If the file is unsigned, the signature is invalid, or the file is in an unexpected location, run a full scan with Windows Security and investigate before allowing the file to run.
If antivirus software recently quarantined the file, open its protection history and note the detection and original path. Restore a quarantined file only when it is the genuine Microsoft-signed copy from the Windows directory. Never restore an unsigned DLL downloaded from a random file site.
Fix 4: Check the Sensor Monitoring Service
The service can help distinguish a Windows service problem from an application-specific problem.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Look for Sensor Monitoring Service or SensrSvc.
- Double-click it if present.
- Note its Service status and Startup type.
You can also query it from an administrator Command Prompt:
sc query SensrSvc
If the service exists but will not start, record the error shown in the Services window and return to DISM and SFC. Do not change the startup type randomly. The service may be unnecessary on hardware without supported sensors, while forcing it to start will not repair a missing system file.

Windows versions and hardware configurations differ, and current sensor implementations do not all use the same visible service arrangement.
Fix 5: Reinstall the sensor or OEM device driver
Use this branch when the real symptom is failed adaptive brightness, screen rotation, orientation detection, sensor detection, or a similar hardware feature rather than a literal missing-file dialog.

- Expand Sensors, Human Interface Devices, System devices, and Display adapters.
- Look for a sensor, HID sensor, chipset, display, or device with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package only when you have already obtained the correct replacement from the computer manufacturer.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the latest sensor, chipset, HID, display, or system driver from the PC manufacturer’s official support page.
- Restart again and test brightness, rotation, or sensor detection.
Windows includes an in-box Sensor HID class driver from Windows 8 onward, but hardware manufacturers may still supply device-specific drivers or firmware. Use the model-specific driver rather than choosing a similarly named package for another computer.
Driver hunting is often the slowest part because several packages can appear current while one chipset or HID dependency remains stale. If the driver reinstalls successfully but the sensor still fails, check BIOS or firmware updates from the manufacturer and inspect Device Manager for a persistent hardware error.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore when the failure began after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, security product action, or other system change.
From Windows:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back drivers, applications, registry settings, and system files. If Windows cannot boot normally, enter the recovery environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
Fix 7: Repair Windows when DISM and SFC cannot help
If the file repeatedly disappears or SFC cannot repair it, investigate the underlying cause instead of repeatedly downloading replacements.

- Antivirus quarantine or security software removal
- Malware or an unwanted program
- Disk errors or failing storage
- A damaged Windows component store
- A third-party cleanup utility deleting protected files
- An interrupted Windows upgrade
- File-system corruption
Review the SFC and CBS logs if you need to identify the failed component. Also check disk health using the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility or Windows’ built-in health information.
If the installation remains damaged, use Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. An in-place repair installation can preserve applications and personal files when the edition and installation media are appropriate. Resetting Windows or performing a clean installation is a last resort, particularly when storage failure or malware may be involved. Back up important files first.

Do not download sensrsvc.dll from a DLL website
A downloaded file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, match a different Windows build, or lack required dependencies. Copying it into System32 or an application folder can also create version conflicts and bypass Windows servicing.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, Microsoft recovery options, and the computer manufacturer’s official drivers instead.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer, such as certain ActiveX and COM libraries. sensrsvc.dll is associated with a Windows service and is not normally repaired by self-registration.

A command such as this is therefore not a general fix:
regsvr32 sensrsvc.dll
“Cannot register sensrsvc.dll” usually means the wrong repair method was attempted, not that the file needs repeated registration.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this error alone
There is no evidence that sensrsvc.dll is a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, or game runtime file. Install those runtimes only when the error separately names a runtime component that genuinely requires them.

Is sensrsvc.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows component associated with Sensor Monitoring Service. A same-named file outside the Windows directory, especially one that is unsigned, should be investigated rather than trusted.
Is it part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Do not assume that every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation contains the same binary or service arrangement. Windows build, architecture, servicing state, hardware, and sensor platform affect what is present.
Should sensrsvc.dll be in System32 or SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit compatibility files. Folder names are not a safe way to choose a replacement. Let Windows servicing restore the correct architecture.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
The named file may have a missing dependency, invalid signature, damaged component relationship, or a service or driver problem. Run DISM and SFC, inspect the signature, query SensrSvc, and reinstall the relevant OEM sensor drivers.

Is this caused by a particular game?
No specific game or application dependency is reliably established for this file. If only one program reports the error, check whether the message is actually naming a separate dependency or whether that program is incorrectly calling a Windows component. Repair Windows first, then repair the affected application from its official installer if necessary.
When is reinstalling Windows justified?
Use an in-place repair when Windows servicing cannot restore the component and the system remains damaged. Consider a reset or clean installation only after backing up data and ruling out malware or failing storage.
