“The program can’t start because applepushdirect.dll is missing from your computer.”
applepushdirect.dll is an Apple Push Service library installed with Apple software, not a Windows system file.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- The error names iTunes, Apple Devices, or another Apple program: repair or reinstall that exact program.
- The app came from Microsoft Store: repair, reset, or reinstall it through Windows.
- You recently removed Apple software: remove its orphaned startup entry or reinstall the program that still needs it.
- Windows Security detected the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the DLL itself or one of its dependencies may be missing.
- Several unrelated programs fail: check Windows system files with DISM and SFC.
- Only a game or non-Apple application reports the error: repair that application first. It may have bundled or redistributed the file.

Apple software may install both 32-bit and 64-bit components. A 32-bit application can need the x86 version even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs the x64 build. Copying a DLL with the wrong architecture usually produces another loading error.
Observed public metadata includes both x86 and x64 builds and several file versions. Those database entries do not establish a universal “latest” version for every Apple installer, so match the file to the application package that installed it.
Fix 1: Repair the Apple application
Repair is the safest first step because it restores the DLL alongside its dependencies and application configuration.
Microsoft Store application
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Apple Devices, iTunes, or the Apple application named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the original Apple application again.
If the error is gone, the installation was damaged and Windows successfully restored its files.
If Repair does not work, return to the same screen and select Reset. Reset can remove application data. Reopen the Microsoft Store afterward, select Library, and reinstall or update the Apple application.
Conventional desktop installation
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find iTunes or the Apple program involved.
- Open its menu and choose Modify, Change, or Repair, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the program.
You can also try:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Apple program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if the installer provides it.
Not every desktop program exposes a repair option. If it does not, uninstall the damaged Apple program, restart Windows, and reinstall it from Apple’s official Windows software source or the Microsoft Store. Use one distribution channel rather than mixing an old standalone iTunes installation with a Store installation.

Fix 2: Reinstall the exact owning program
A clean reinstall is appropriate when repair fails, the update was interrupted, or the Apple application was only partially removed.
Before uninstalling, close iTunes, Apple Devices, Apple Music, and related Apple processes.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall the Apple application named in the error.
- Restart Windows.
- If multiple old Apple entries remain, review them carefully before removing them. Do not delete unrelated Apple software automatically.
- Install the current Apple application from the Microsoft Store, or install legacy iTunes from Apple’s official Windows download page if that is the package your system requires.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application from its new Start menu shortcut.
If the error appears during startup after the Apple software was removed, do not restore the DLL just to satisfy an orphaned shortcut. Open Task Manager, select Startup apps, and disable an obsolete Apple entry. Then check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for the parent program that should be removed.
A reinstall should recreate the file inside the application’s installation directory. The exact path differs between desktop installers and Store packages, so do not treat one observed WindowsApps path as universal.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Antivirus software may quarantine or delete a damaged, altered, or incorrectly identified application file. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the detection involving
applepushdirect.dll. - Expand it and inspect the original path, detection name, and affected application.
- If the path belongs to a correctly installed Apple package, update or reinstall that Apple application first.
- Restore the file only when you have verified that the package and publisher are trustworthy.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a malicious file can expose the device again. If the file was found in a download folder, temporary directory, random user folder, or unknown application directory, leave it quarantined and scan the system.

After restoring a verified file, repair or reinstall the parent Apple application anyway. That replaces the file with the package’s intended copy and restores related dependencies.
Fix 4: Check architecture and dependencies
A missing-file message does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may report “The specified module could not be found” when a dependency loaded by the DLL is missing.
Check these details:
- Is the failing application 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Was iTunes installed from the Microsoft Store or an older desktop installer?
- Does the file path belong to the application currently being launched?
- Are there multiple Apple installations?
- Did the error begin after an update or incomplete uninstall?
Do not place an x86 DLL in a 64-bit application directory, or an x64 DLL in a 32-bit application directory. Reinstall the application using the package intended for its architecture.
Recommended Free Tools
Visual C++ is not the normal owner of applepushdirect.dll. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the error also names a runtime such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. The Microsoft package names are vc_redist.x86.exe and vc_redist.x64.exe; they are not a replacement for repairing Apple software.
Fix 5: Check Windows components only when other programs fail
applepushdirect.dll is normally application-owned, so Windows component repair will not usually recreate it. Use these commands when several unrelated applications are failing or Windows itself appears corrupted.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the Apple application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Success means Windows reports that the operation completed or that protected files were repaired. If SFC reports files it could not repair, restart and run it once more. Persistent application-only errors still point back to the Apple installation rather than Windows.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is a damaged application package. Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of detected repair issues; repair actions require the full version. Reinstalling the Apple program remains the definitive fix when that program owns the DLL.

Do not enable optional Windows Features for this file. applepushdirect.dll is not established as a Windows feature component.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a missing-DLL repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command.
This command is therefore not a routine solution:
regsvr32 applepushdirect.dll
A failed attempt may report that the DLL was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That does not mean the file belongs in System32, and it does not identify the missing dependency. Repair or reinstall the parent application instead.
Fix 7: Update drivers only for a broader device problem
A graphics, storage, or device driver is not normally responsible for owning applepushdirect.dll. Device Manager is relevant only if the Apple application error appears alongside broader hardware or device failures.

To check:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories with warning icons.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver was installed.
Do not uninstall a working device merely because this DLL is missing. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; driver installation through the full version is optional and not a substitute for reinstalling the Apple application.
If the error continues after reinstalling
Record the following before trying more changes:
- The complete error text
- The application name
- The full path shown for
applepushdirect.dll - Whether the application came from the Microsoft Store or a desktop installer
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether antivirus quarantined the file
- The parent process shown when the error appears
Then check for:
- A stale desktop shortcut
- An orphaned startup entry
- A scheduled task left by removed Apple software
- A second Apple installation
- A damaged Windows user profile
- A backup or temporary directory containing an old copy
If the reinstall does not recreate the file in the application’s own package, contact Apple or Microsoft support with the recorded path and installation source. Do not copy a random DLL into the application folder.
Prevention
- Keep Apple software updated through its original installation channel.
- Avoid mixing Store and legacy desktop packages without a specific reason.
- Leave antivirus protection enabled.
- Review quarantine history before restoring application files.
- Keep the original installer source available.
- Do not replace application DLLs with files from another computer.
- Remove obsolete startup entries after uninstalling Apple software.
- Back up important application data before using Reset or uninstalling a Store app.
FAQ
Is applepushdirect.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Apple Push Service and Apple Windows software. It should not normally be copied into System32 or SysWOW64.

Should I download the DLL separately?
No. A standalone download may have the wrong architecture, version, dependencies, or an unsafe modification. Repair or reinstall the Apple application that needs it.
Does Visual C++ Redistributable fix this file?
Usually not. Visual C++ may matter only when the error separately names a Microsoft runtime DLL. applepushdirect.dll itself is associated with Apple software.
Does regsvr32 fix the error?
Generally no. Registration is different from restoring a missing application file, and this DLL should not be registered routinely.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
A dependency loaded by applepushdirect.dll may be missing, or the application may be loading a copy from another installation. Repairing the complete parent application is safer than replacing the named file alone.
Do I need both 32-bit and 64-bit copies?
Only when installed applications require them. A 32-bit Apple application can need x86 components on 64-bit Windows. Reinstall the application package matching the failing program rather than manually copying both DLL variants.
