akshhl29.dll is not a Windows system file. It is an obscure component of the legacy Aladdin HASP HL hardware-licensing system, so the safest fix is to restore the application or licensing package that installed it rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The program reporting the error may be an older engineering, CAD, industrial, scientific, or other licensed application that uses an Aladdin or SafeNet USB security key. The exact application cannot be identified from the filename alone.

First, identify the application that needs it
Before changing Windows, find the program that produced the message. Reinstalling the wrong runtime will not repair the protected application.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the first line of the message. Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because akshhl29.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “akshhl29.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because akshhl29.dll was not found.”
- “Cannot find akshhl29.dll.”
- “akshhl29.dll error loading.”
The wording varies by Windows version and by the application requesting the file.
Check the shortcut location
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target path and Start in folder.
- Note the program name and installation folder.
If the shortcut points to a removable drive, network location, or old program folder, reconnect that location before reinstalling anything.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Search for the program name, its vendor, or an entry containing HASP, Sentinel, SafeNet, or Aladdin.
- Record the application name before selecting Uninstall or Repair.
Also check whether the computer has an Aladdin, HASP, SafeNet, or Sentinel USB key attached. Do not remove the key while the application is running.
Fix 1: Repair the original application
This is the most likely solution because the application installer normally places the DLL together with the complete licensing service and driver package.
- Close the affected application.
- Save your work and disconnect any unnecessary USB devices.
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
If there is no Repair option:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Right-click the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if available.
- Complete the vendor’s maintenance wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the licensing key and test the application.
If Repair is unavailable or fails, reinstall the program from its original vendor media, installer, or support portal. Use the same release family required by the application and keep its license key available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat success looks like: the application opens without the akshhl29.dll message, and the licensing service recognizes the USB key or license.
If it fails: do not copy a replacement DLL into the application directory. Continue with the official HASP or Sentinel runtime step below.
Fix 2: Install the official HASP or Sentinel runtime
Thales maintains the Sentinel product line associated with HASP, SafeNet, and Aladdin licensing technology. Its official Sentinel driver-download page provides current and legacy runtime packages, but the correct package depends on the application’s age and licensing system.
Use the driver supplied by the application vendor first. If the vendor directs you to the Thales package, use the official HASPUserSetup.exe installer or the runtime installer specified for that application.

- Close the affected program.
- Disconnect and reconnect the HASP or Sentinel USB key.
- Download the runtime only from the application vendor or the official Thales Sentinel drivers page.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installation wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Connect the USB key directly to the computer rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Start the protected application.
Some vendor packages instead contain haspdinst.exe. Open Command Prompt as administrator, change to the folder containing that file, and run:
haspdinst.exe -i
For the installer’s command-line help, run:
haspdinst.exe -?
Thales documents an installation log at:
C:Windowsaksdrvsetup.log
If the installation reports an error, open File Explorer, enter that path in the address bar, and review the log for the vendor’s support team.
What success looks like: the runtime installs without an error, the licensing key appears normally in Device Manager, and the original application starts.
If it fails: the application may require an older HASP HL runtime rather than the newest Sentinel package. Contact the application vendor with the application version, Windows version, exact error text, and the name printed on the USB key.

Updating or reinstalling related drivers
Do not assume that every driver listed in Device Manager is related to this error. The relevant package is the application’s HASP or Sentinel runtime, not necessarily a graphics, audio, chipset, or printer driver.
If the vendor identifies a damaged USB or licensing driver:
- Press Windows + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, Software devices, or the category named by the vendor.
- Right-click the identified device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the vendor’s official HASP or Sentinel package again.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through multiple driver versions: its free scan shows what it identifies as outdated, while driver installation requires the full version. It is optional, and the application vendor’s licensing package remains the definitive fix for akshhl29.dll.
What success looks like: Device Manager no longer shows an error icon for the relevant licensing device, and the protected application recognizes its key.

Security software may quarantine a driver file after an application update or migration. Do not restore it blindly.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
akshhl29.dll, the application, or its installer. - Expand the entry and review its location and detection details.
Only restore or allow the file if you have confirmed that it came from the legitimate application installer or vendor package. If the file was found in a temporary folder, an email attachment, or an unofficial download, leave it quarantined and perform a full scan.
After confirming the source, reinstall the complete application or licensing package rather than restoring only the DLL. This restores related services and driver files together.
What success looks like: the official installer completes, Windows Security no longer removes the file, and the application launches.

If it fails: contact the application vendor before creating an antivirus exclusion. A missing licensing file can also indicate a damaged or tampered installer.
Fix 4: Confirm the architecture and legacy-runtime requirement
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit application. The important combination is the protected application, its HASP libraries, and the runtime package supplied by the vendor.
Do not install a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL based only on whether Windows is 64-bit. Do not assume that System32 always means “64-bit” in every troubleshooting context; Windows uses compatibility redirection for some 32-bit software.
Ask the application vendor:
- Is the program 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Does it require the legacy HASP HL runtime?
- Does it support the current Sentinel LDK runtime?
- Does it require a physical HASP or Sentinel key?
- Is a driverless Sentinel key supported?
Older HASP HL applications can remain compatible with Sentinel HL in HASP configuration, but newer driverless configurations may use different files and may not contain akshhl29.dll. Converting an older key to a driverless configuration can also be irreversible and may break software that uses older protection libraries.

Because akshhl29.dll is not verified as a Windows component, System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. Use these commands when Windows itself is behaving incorrectly, or when several unrelated system files are also damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. These commands repair protected Windows components, not normally third-party HASP files.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual repair process easier by scanning for issues instead of repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the original licensed application remains the definitive fix for this file.
What success looks like: SFC reports that it repaired Windows files, and other Windows problems disappear.
If it fails: return to the application repair and official licensing-runtime steps. Do not expect DISM or SFC to supply akshhl29.dll.
Fix 6: Use System Restore if the failure is recent
System Restore can undo recent driver, application, update, and configuration changes.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Record recent application and driver changes first. System Restore may remove programs or updates installed after the selected restore point.

Do not download the DLL from a random website
A loose DLL may contain malware, the wrong architecture, the wrong version, or an altered binary. Even a genuine-looking replacement may not install the HASP service, USB driver, or licensing components the application requires.

Use the original application vendor, original installation media, or the official Thales Sentinel driver source instead.
Do not copy it into Windows folders
Copying akshhl29.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or multiple application directories can create version conflicts and bypass the installer’s driver registration.
Do not run regsvr32 on it
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified evidence that akshhl29.dll is an ActiveX or COM component. Running this is not a general DLL repair:
regsvr32 akshhl29.dll
Do not install Visual C++ Redistributables automatically
The available evidence identifies akshhl29.dll as a HASP driver coinstaller, not a Microsoft runtime file. Install Visual C++ only when the application vendor specifically requires it or a separate error identifies that runtime.

FAQ
Is akshhl29.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with third-party Aladdin HASP HL licensing software.
What installed akshhl29.dll?
Usually an older application protected by an Aladdin HASP HL USB key or a related SafeNet or Sentinel licensing package.
Does the file require a physical dongle?
Often, yes. Some HASP HL and Sentinel HL applications require a compatible USB key and the matching runtime.
Can I fix the error by installing the newest Sentinel runtime?
Not always. Modern packages may use different files or support newer driverless configurations. Follow the application vendor’s required runtime version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does the error appear after reinstalling Windows?
The application may still be present, but its legacy licensing driver was removed during the Windows installation or migration. Reinstall the application’s complete HASP or Sentinel package.
Should I use Device Manager to update it?
Only if the application vendor identifies a specific licensing or USB driver. Device Manager cannot reconstruct the complete protected application installation by itself.
What information should I give the application vendor?
Provide the exact error message, application name and version, Windows version, installation history, USB-key name, and any relevant C:Windowsaksdrvsetup.log entries.
