AutoCAD 2021 and earlier
- Save your work and close AutoCAD.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select AutoCAD in the installed-programs list.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair or Reinstall, if either option is available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Start AutoCAD from its normal shortcut.
Choose Repair when available. Autodesk describes repair as a way to restore missing product files. Reinstalling also replaces the program files and repairs installation information.
AutoCAD 2022 and newer
The older repair option may not be available with the newer installation experience. In that case:
- Close AutoCAD and any Autodesk desktop applications.
- Open the Autodesk Account or use the original official Autodesk installer.
- Download the installer for the same AutoCAD product and release.
- Run the installer.
- If the installer offers an uninstall option, remove the affected AutoCAD installation first.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Run the fresh installer again.
- Start AutoCAD and test the feature that previously failed.
If you no longer have the installer, download AutoCAD again through your Autodesk Account. Do not obtain apploadres.dll separately.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair succeeded if AutoCAD starts without the missing-file message and the affected command or workspace opens normally. If the same message appears, continue with the antivirus check and clean reinstall steps below.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software can quarantine an application file after an update, installation change, or false positive. Check the quarantine history before manually copying anything.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
apploadres.dllor the AutoCAD installation folder. - Open the event and inspect the detected file path.
- Confirm that the path belongs to your installed AutoCAD copy.
- Confirm that AutoCAD was installed from Autodesk.
- Only then use the available Restore or Allow on device action, if you are confident the detection is incorrect.
- Restart Windows and launch AutoCAD.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again. If the file is immediately quarantined again, do not keep restoring it. Update Windows Security, run a full scan, and repair or reinstall AutoCAD from its official installer instead.
If the quarantine record points to a temporary folder, an unofficial download location, or an unexpected program, do not restore that file. Remove it and investigate the source.
Fix 3: Perform a clean AutoCAD reinstall
Time needed: 30–90 minutes
Use this fix when repair fails, the original installer was damaged, or AutoCAD contains mixed or incomplete files.
Before starting, back up custom templates, profiles, scripts, plot styles, fonts, and other files you need. Some settings may be removed during a clean uninstall.
- Close AutoCAD.
- Close Autodesk Access and other Autodesk applications.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11 or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for AutoCAD.
- Select the affected AutoCAD release.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the Autodesk uninstall prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Download a fresh installer from your Autodesk Account or use trusted Autodesk installation media.
- Install the same AutoCAD release again.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Launch AutoCAD before restoring custom files.
If a normal uninstall leaves the problem in place, follow Autodesk’s clean-uninstall procedure for that AutoCAD release. Remove only Autodesk components identified by that procedure. Do not delete arbitrary folders from C:Windows, System32, or SysWOW64.
Check for mixed AutoCAD files
Do not copy apploadres.dll from another AutoCAD release. A file from an older or newer version may have a different set of dependencies and can create a version conflict.
Also remove unofficial copies from folders that AutoCAD searches. Reinstalling the complete product is safer than trying to assemble a working installation from individual DLLs.
Fix 4: Check the AutoCAD version and Windows compatibility
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
An older AutoCAD release may not be supported on a newer Windows version. This can cause startup failures that look like missing-DLL problems.
- Identify the exact AutoCAD release you installed.
- Open the release’s official Autodesk system requirements.
- Check whether your Windows edition and version are supported.
- Install available updates for that AutoCAD release.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD again.
If the release is not supported on your version of Windows, repeated DLL replacement is unlikely to provide a reliable solution. Use a supported AutoCAD release when possible.

Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows files. They generally cannot recreate a missing Autodesk application file, so use them when Windows itself also appears damaged or several unrelated programs are failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test AutoCAD.
The order matters: complete DISM first, then run SFC. Microsoft documents this sequence for repairing Windows component-store and protected system-file corruption.

Fix 6: Repair Visual C++ only when the error names it
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Do not install Visual C++ redistributables merely because apploadres.dll is missing. The file is identified as an AutoCAD resource DLL, not a Microsoft runtime file.
Visual C++ repair becomes relevant if the complete error also names files such as:

When that happens:
- Open Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ redistributable downloads page.
- Download the package architecture required by the affected AutoCAD installation.
- Run the installer.
- Choose Repair if it is already installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AutoCAD again.
Microsoft provides separate packages including VC_redist.x64.exe, VC_redist.x86.exe, and VC_redist.arm64.exe. Do not assume that the architecture of apploadres.dll determines which runtime package is needed. Public metadata disagrees about the architecture of this file, and that metadata is not an Autodesk manifest.
If the error mentions only apploadres.dll, repair AutoCAD instead of repeatedly reinstalling Visual C++.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Time needed: Not applicable
regsvr32 is used to register DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point called DllRegisterServer. apploadres.dll is described as a resource DLL, so it is not normally a COM or ActiveX server.
Do not run this as a routine fix:
regsvr32 apploadres.dll
A registration error would not restore the missing AutoCAD files or repair the installation. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command’s registration purpose, but it does not establish that this AutoCAD resource DLL supports registration.

Fix 8: Update drivers only when other symptoms point to drivers
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A graphics-driver problem can cause AutoCAD display failures or crashes, but it is not the usual explanation for a missing apploadres.dll message. Treat driver repair as a separate troubleshooting step when AutoCAD also shows rendering problems, black screens, device errors, or crashes in other graphics applications.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click your graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
- Test AutoCAD.
You can also obtain the driver from the graphics hardware manufacturer. Avoid driver packages from unofficial download pages.

Fix 9: Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64

There is no reliable evidence that apploadres.dll belongs in either of these Windows folders:

It should normally be located inside the AutoCAD product directory that installed it. The correct location depends on the AutoCAD release and installation choices.

- Leave the real AutoCAD installation incomplete
- Cause Windows or AutoCAD to load the wrong copy
- Mix files from different releases
- Create additional dependency or permission problems
If you find an isolated copy in a system folder, do not assume it is correct. Repair or reinstall AutoCAD so the installer places all matching files in their intended locations.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Avoid websites that offer apploadres.dll as an individual download. Such files may be:

These are representative Windows DLL messages. The exact wording can differ between AutoCAD releases and Windows versions.
The message “specified module could not be found” can also mean that apploadres.dll exists but one of its dependencies cannot be loaded. Reinstalling the complete AutoCAD product is safer than guessing which dependency to copy.
