The error messages
You may see one of these messages when Windows or an application cannot use appsruprov.dll:
- “The program can’t start because appsruprov.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “appsruprov.dll was not found.”
- “appsruprov.dll could not be located.”
- “appsruprov.dll could not be loaded.”
- “appsruprov.dll is corrupted.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library appsruprov.dll.”
appsruprov.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL, not a game-specific file or a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. It is the Application System Resource Usage Monitor provider, an extension used by Windows System Resource Usage Monitor, also called SRUM.

The safest repair order is:
- Install pending Windows updates and restart.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run DISM first, then System File Checker:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows again.
- If a particular application displays the error, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer.
- If antivirus quarantined the file, inspect the detection before deciding whether it is safe to restore.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as a source for protected Windows files. See Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.

What appsruprov.dll does
The file belongs to Windows and normally resides at:
%SystemRoot%System32appsruprov.dll
The associated event provider is Microsoft-Windows-AppSruProv. It supplies application-resource-usage information to SRUM, which records selected resource-usage data through several Windows providers.
This is why the error can be confusing. The popup may appear while starting an application, viewing system activity, running maintenance, or processing an event-log operation. There is no established single game or commercial application that universally causes this error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA documented Windows sample is 64-bit and has version 10.0.19041.1. The older 10.0.17134.1 version is plausible for a particular Windows 10 build, but it is not a universal current version. Windows component versions vary by release, architecture, servicing level, and cumulative updates.
Why Windows reports the error
The wording alone does not identify the cause. The usual possibilities are:
| What happened | Appropriate response |
|---|---|
| A protected Windows file was deleted or corrupted | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| An update did not complete correctly | Install updates, restart, or use recovery |
| Defender or another antivirus quarantined the file | Check Protection history |
| The disk or filesystem is damaged | Repair Windows, then investigate disk health |
| A file with the same name is in the wrong directory | Remove the unsafe copy and repair Windows |
| A specific application triggers the message | Repair or reinstall that application |
| The DLL has the wrong build or architecture | Restore the matching Windows component |
| Malware removed or replaced the file | Run a complete security scan |
A file named appsruprov.dll is not automatically genuine. Its location, Microsoft signature, architecture, and relationship to the installed Windows build all matter.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
A failed or incomplete update can leave a protected component unavailable.
Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no additional updates are offered.
Windows 10
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates and restart.
Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions cover the same process.
After restarting, repeat the action that produced the error. If the message has disappeared, the missing component was likely restored or the incomplete update was completed.
If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a DLL manually.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of appsruprov.dll.

- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. It can take time, and the progress percentage may appear unchanged temporarily. Do not close the window while it is working.
When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows.
How to interpret the result
-
“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
SFC found no damaged protected files. If the error continues, check the file path, antivirus history, and the application that triggered it. -
“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.”
Restart and test again. This is the expected successful outcome.PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.”
Restart once, run DISM again, and repeat SFC. If it still cannot repair the files, use Windows recovery or matching installation media rather than downloading an individual DLL.
While you are manually comparing scan results and repeating commands, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it identifies during its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version, so it is optional and not required for the Microsoft repair process.
Fix 3: Repair the application that triggers the message
If the popup names one identifiable application, repair that application after completing Windows repair.
Windows 11
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the application.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Repair if it is available.
If Repair is missing or does not help, uninstall and reinstall the application using its official installer or launcher. Do not use a random DLL download as a substitute for repairing the owning program.

The application’s official reinstall remains the definitive fix for files that belong to that application, but appsruprov.dll itself is normally a Windows component.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed a file after a false positive, or it may have detected a counterfeit DLL.
Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the application.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections related to
appsruprov.dll. - Expand the detection to see its original path and action.
Only consider restoring the file if all of the following are true:
- It was located in the expected Windows directory.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- The detection is clearly a false positive.
- A current security scan does not identify a broader infection.
Do not restore a file merely because its filename is correct. If the file was found in a downloads folder, a temporary directory, an application folder, or another unexpected location, leave it quarantined and run a complete scan. Microsoft explains these actions in its guide to Protection history.

Fix 5: Verify the file’s location and signature
If a file exists, check whether it is the Windows copy.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Find
appsruprov.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for the location.
- Open Digital Signatures.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
The normal location is the Windows System32 directory. A valid file should have a Microsoft signature. A missing signature, an invalid signature, or an unexpected directory is a reason not to use that copy.
You can also calculate its hash for comparison with a known-good file:
certutil -hashfile C:WindowsSystem32appsruprov.dll SHA256
A hash is useful only when you have a trustworthy matching reference. Do not assume that two files are interchangeable because their names match.
Check the Windows architecture here:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
Do not replace an x64 Windows component with an x86 file, or copy a file from a different Windows build. The documented sample is 64-bit, but the correct component depends on the installed Windows release and servicing state.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore when the problem began immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver change, or software installation.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove subsequently installed applications, updates, drivers, and settings. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 7: Investigate drivers only when evidence points there
Drivers are not the primary explanation for an appsruprov.dll error. Use Device Manager only if Event Viewer or the affected application identifies a particular device or driver.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the category named in the error.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
For a recently updated driver, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
Manually hunting through numerous driver versions can be time-consuming. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify drivers during its free scan, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and not a substitute for repairing Windows when the evidence points to a system component.

regsvr32 appsruprov.dll
A registration error does not prove that the file is damaged. Repair the Windows component with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead. Microsoft documents the purpose of regsvr32.
When Windows still cannot repair the file
If DISM and SFC repeatedly fail:
- Back up important personal files.
- Check whether Windows Update can complete successfully.
- Review Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
- Use System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
- On supported Windows 11 systems, open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now, if available.
This repair reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings according to Microsoft’s Windows repair reinstall instructions.
If that option is unavailable or unsuccessful, use matching official Windows installation media for an in-place repair. Do not keep replacing individual system DLLs from other computers.
Frequently asked questions
Is appsruprov.dll malware?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with the same name outside the expected Windows directory, with an invalid signature or suspicious parent process, may be unsafe. Verify the path and signature before restoring or replacing anything.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No. There is no established evidence that those redistributables supply appsruprov.dll. Install them only when a separate application error specifically requires them.
Is appsruprov.dll part of a game?
It is normally part of Windows, not a game-specific DLL. A game or application may trigger the message indirectly, but repair that application only after checking Windows itself.
Why does the file have version 10.0.17134.1?
That is a plausible historical Windows 10 build-specific version. It is not a universal latest version. Do not replace a current file simply because another version number appears online.
Can I copy it from another computer?
Only as an advanced recovery measure when the Windows edition, build, architecture, language, signature, and servicing state match. DISM, SFC, and official Windows repair sources are safer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I enable a Windows Feature?
No Windows Feature is established as the normal installation mechanism for this provider. Do not toggle unrelated Windows Features to fix this error.
What if the error returns after SFC repairs it?
Check Protection history, confirm the file remains in System32, and review Event Viewer or the affected application’s logs. A recurring failure may indicate disk corruption, malware, or a damaged component store that requires Windows recovery rather than another manual DLL replacement.
