p2esocks_1041.dll is not a normal Windows runtime file, and its historical use is tied to the Instant Access, EGroup, and P2E dialer family. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, scan the PC first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: a game, an old utility, or Windows sign-in itself
- When it appears: at startup, after logging in, or only when launching an application
- The exact command or entry: especially
rundll32.exe p2esocks_1041.dll,InstantAccess - Your Windows architecture: check Settings > System > About > System type
- Whether antivirus recently quarantined something: open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history
The startup command is more important than the generic “DLL not found” wording. Historical records associate this command with an Instant Access autorun entry, sometimes alongside EGAUTH_1041_FR_XP.cab. That makes a leftover malware startup reference more likely than a broken game installation.

What the p2esocks_1041.dll error means
p2esocks_1041.dll is not identified as a Windows, Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, driver, or other standard Microsoft component. It should not be treated as a file that belongs in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

rundll32.exe itself is a legitimate Windows program. The suspicious part is the command that tells it to load p2esocks_1041.dll and call its InstantAccess export.

A missing-module message can technically also indicate a missing dependency. However, there is no verified legitimate dependency chain for this filename, and the documented startup command points more strongly to stale malware persistence.
Fix 1: Run a full malware scan first
Do this before restoring files, reinstalling runtimes, or editing the registry.
- Open Start, type Windows Security, and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Select Full scan, then click Scan now.
- Allow Windows Security to remove or quarantine confirmed threats.
- Return to Virus & threat protection and open Protection history.
- For a confirmed threat, choose Remove, not Restore.
Restoring a quarantined file puts it back where it can run. Only restore it when you have strong evidence that the detection is a false positive and the file belongs to a trusted, signed application.

If the popup returns, or the scan finds a related threat, run the offline scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Scan options.
- Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
- Click Scan now.
- Save your work when Windows warns that it will restart.
Defender Offline scans before normal Windows processes load, which can help detect a loader that hides or protects itself during a normal session. Review Protection history after Windows starts again.
If the PC has ever used a telephone modem, disconnect it until scanning is complete. Historical dialer families could attempt premium-rate connections, although the main concern today is the remaining malware or downloader.
Fix 2: Remove the stale Instant Access startup entry
Once scans are complete, inspect what Windows is still trying to launch.
Use Microsoft Autoruns
Microsoft Autoruns shows startup locations that Task Manager does not always make obvious, including Run keys, scheduled tasks, services, and other autostart entries.

- Download and run Microsoft Autoruns.
- Right-click the program and choose Run as administrator.
- Open Options.
- Select Hide Signed Microsoft Entries.
- Press Ctrl+F and search for
p2esocks_1041. - Search again for
Instant Access. - Inspect the Image Path or command line.
- If the entry clearly points to
p2esocks_1041.dllor the historical Instant Access command, first clear its checkbox to disable it. - Restart Windows and confirm that the popup is gone.
- If the system remains clean, reopen Autoruns and delete only that confirmed malicious entry.
Do not disable unrelated startup entries merely because they have unfamiliar names. Check the command, file path, publisher, and detection history before removing anything.
Remove the specific Run value manually
The commonly observed location is the current user’s Run key. Back it up before editing:
reg export "HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun" "%USERPROFILE%DesktopRun-backup.reg" /y
Then remove only the confirmed Instant Access value:

Check the machine-wide Run key as well:
reg query "HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun"
Do not delete unrelated values. If the entry is under the 32-bit compatibility location, inspect it rather than assuming the 32-bit DLL belongs in a Windows folder:
reg query "HKLMSoftwareWOW6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun"
Restart the computer. Success means the startup popup no longer appears and the Instant Access value does not return.
Fix 3: Scan again if the entry returns
A startup entry that recreates itself indicates that something else is still running. It may be a scheduled task, downloader, browser component, service, or another malware file.
Use Microsoft Safety Scanner as a second opinion:
- Download the current Microsoft Safety Scanner.
- Choose the download that matches the system’s 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Run the scanner as administrator.
- Select a full scan.
- Review the results.
- Check
%SYSTEMROOT%debugmsert.logfor the detailed report.
Safety Scanner is portable and expires ten days after download, so obtain a fresh copy when performing a later scan. After cleanup, run Autoruns again and check whether the entry has returned.
If threats continue to be detected, disconnect the PC from the network where practical, change important passwords from a clean device, and avoid signing into sensitive accounts until the system is under control.

Fix 4: Reinstall the legitimate application only when you can identify it
The supplied file metadata does not identify a trustworthy publisher, current product, official installer, or supported application. Do not assume that an error window proves a modern game or utility needs this DLL.
If the message appears only when launching a known, legitimate program:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Locate the application.
- Open its menu and choose Uninstall, if available.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the application again from its official developer or publisher.
- Install it using the correct architecture for the program.
- Run the application once as administrator if it requires access to an old installation folder.
For a game installed through a launcher, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function before uninstalling it. A legitimate installer should restore files into the application’s own folder, not ask you to copy an unknown DLL into System32.
If the error appears at Windows sign-in rather than when launching a known application, reinstalling an unrelated program is unlikely to help. Continue with the startup and malware steps instead.
Do not download or register this DLL
Do not obtain p2esocks_1041.dll from a random DLL archive. A replacement can contain malware, be the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, use the wrong version, or simply preserve the startup hook without fixing the infection.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. Windows DLL search behavior can cause an arbitrary library to load in an unsafe location, and the claimed version and hash information for this filename is not confirmed by Microsoft or an identified publisher.
regsvr32 is also normally the wrong repair. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration exports such as DllRegisterServer. The documented use of this filename is through rundll32.exe and the InstantAccess entry, not COM registration. Running regsvr32 will not make an untrusted DLL legitimate.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only for broader corruption
There is no evidence that p2esocks_1041.dll is a protected Windows component, so System File Checker is unlikely to restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows has wider symptoms such as damaged built-in applications, failed updates, or multiple unrelated system errors.

- Open Start.
- Type Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both tools report that they repaired corruption, test Windows again. If they complete without finding a problem, return to the malware and startup-entry investigation.

A driver issue is not a likely explanation for this particular filename. Check drivers only if you also have crashes, missing devices, display problems, or a game that fails after a hardware change.

- Expand Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and any category showing a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Properties > Driver.
- Note the provider and driver date.
- Use Update driver or obtain the package from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and retest.

Fix 7: Do not reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET for this filename
Reinstalling a runtime is appropriate when the error names a genuine runtime file, such as vcruntime140.dll or msvcp140.dll, or identifies a DirectX or .NET component.
Microsoft’s Visual C++ packages install Microsoft C and C++ runtime libraries. The legacy DirectX package supplies components such as D3DX, XInput, and XAudio. Neither package is associated with p2esocks_1041.dll.
You can use Settings > Apps > Installed apps to repair a separately identified runtime, but installing these packages will not recreate a trusted copy of this suspicious filename.

If the popup began after a known change and malware scans are clean, System Restore may remove a stale registry setting.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore rolls back registry settings, drivers, system files, and installed programs. It is not a substitute for malware removal, and restoring an infected state can bring the problem back.
If persistence continues after scanning and cleanup, back up personal documents carefully and consider Windows recovery or a clean installation.

FAQ
Is p2esocks_1041.dll part of Windows?
No authoritative Microsoft evidence identifies it as a Windows component. Do not place it in System32 or SysWOW64.
Why did the error appear after antivirus removed a threat?
The antivirus may have removed the DLL while leaving the registry command that launched it. Windows then calls rundll32.exe, which reports that the module cannot be found.
Is this a missing Visual C++ or DirectX file?
There is no evidence that it is. Reinstall those runtimes only when a separate error identifies a genuine Microsoft runtime component.
Should I restore the file from quarantine?
Normally no. Restore it only for a demonstrably false positive involving a trusted, signed publisher. Otherwise, leave it removed and delete the stale startup reference.
What if the file is in an application folder?
A path alone does not prove that the file is safe. Check the digital signature, detection name, startup command, and the application’s original installer. The historical InstantAccess command remains suspicious wherever the DLL is located.

What if Autoruns finds nothing?
Run the full and offline scans again, then check scheduled tasks and the Safety Scanner log. The loader may be using a different persistence location, or the message may be coming from a program-specific shortcut or configuration file.
Will deleting the Run entry damage Windows?
Removing only a confirmed Instant Access value should not damage Windows. Export the key first and avoid deleting unrelated startup values.
