“appvisvstream32.dll” missing or not found
appvisvstream32.dll is a Microsoft Office Click-to-Run component, so an appvisvstream32.dll error usually means that Office’s virtualized installation is damaged. You may see messages such as:
- “The error says that the AppVIsvStream32.dll is missing.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because AppVIsvStream32.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because AppVIsvStream32.dll is missing from your computer.”
The first message is documented in a Microsoft support case. The other messages are common Windows loader formulations, but their exact wording can vary.

What appvisvstream32.dll actually is
The file is normally displayed with Microsoft’s casing as AppVIsvStream32.dll. It belongs to the application-virtualization layer used by Office Click-to-Run and is associated with Microsoft Application Virtualization, or App-V.
That makes it an Office application file, not a normal Windows system DLL. It is not usually supposed to live in:

C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootclientAppvIsvStream32.dll
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficerootFlattenerAppvIsvStream32.dll
The exact path depends on the Office edition, installation architecture, update state, and installed components. Some Office folders contain symbolic links that point back to the main Click-to-Run directory. A link can remain visible while its target has been deleted or moved, producing what looks like a missing DLL error.
The 32 suffix identifies the 32-bit component. A 32-bit Office installation can use this file even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Windows architecture does not automatically determine Office architecture. The corresponding 64-bit component is named AppVIsvStream64.dll.
Office 2013, Office 2016, and Microsoft 365 cases have all involved this component. There is no reliable universal file size, hash, version number, or path that applies to every installation.

Fix 1: Run Office Online Repair
This is the most likely solution because the problem usually comes from an incomplete update, damaged virtualized files, or a broken Office installation.

- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots on the right.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Select Online Repair.
- Select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Choose Modify.
- Approve the prompt.
- Select Online Repair, then Repair.
- Restart Windows.
Close all Office applications before starting. The repair may take some time and requires an internet connection. It can restore the complete Office installation rather than placing one isolated DLL back into a folder.
How to confirm the repair
Open Word or Excel from the Start menu, not only from an old shortcut. Create a blank document and close the program normally. Then test the shortcut that originally produced the error.
If Office opens but another application still reports the DLL error, check whether that application is actually an old Office installation or shortcut. Multiple Office generations can leave stale paths behind.
Fix 2: Remove conflicting or leftover Office installations
A failed Office update, Windows upgrade, previous repair, or removal of an older Office edition can leave broken links and obsolete folders. This is particularly likely when Office 2013, Office 2016, Microsoft 365, MSI-based Office, or different architectures have been installed on the same computer.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Office and Microsoft 365.
- Remove obsolete or duplicate Office entries.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Online Repair on the Office installation you intend to keep.
If Office cannot be removed normally, use Microsoft’s official Office uninstall procedure. Microsoft also provides an uninstall troubleshooter for supported Office versions on Windows 10 and later.
Do not manually delete Click-to-Run folders while Office is installed. Removing a directory without removing its registration and servicing information can leave the installation in a worse state.
Fix 3: Uninstall and reinstall Office
Use a clean reinstall when Online Repair fails, stops with an error, or completes without restoring Office launch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Save your work and close all Office applications.
- Uninstall Office from Settings > Apps.
- If necessary, use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features instead.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the Office license, or use your organization’s official deployment source.
- Download and install Office again from Microsoft’s official reinstall instructions.
- Restart once more and test Word or Excel.
Choose one intended Office architecture. Do not install 32-bit and 64-bit Office components together unless Microsoft’s deployment method specifically supports that configuration.

Reinstalling Office is the definitive fix when the Click-to-Run source files, symbolic-link targets, or installation registration are no longer coherent.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a real Office file, or it can report that it could not inspect a locked, protected, or virtualized file. A scan message alone does not prove that malware removed the DLL.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent events involving Office or
AppVIsvStream32.dll. - Check the detection name and file path.
Only restore the file if you have verified that it is a genuine Microsoft-signed Office file and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring an actual threat can expose the computer. If the event is unclear, repair Office instead of adding a broad antivirus exclusion.

After quarantine, Online Repair is safer than copying a replacement DLL because it obtains the complete Office component set and restores its servicing structure.
Fix 5: Check whether the file is really a missing link target
A folder entry does not always mean the underlying file exists. Office may use symbolic links from folders such as root, Flattener, or Integration to the Click-to-Run component directory.
If File Explorer shows the name but Office still reports it as missing:
- Right-click the file or shortcut and select Properties.
- Check whether it identifies a link or points to another location.
- Follow the target path if one is shown.
- Do not replace the link manually.
- Run Online Repair to rebuild the correct link and target.
A broken target can follow a failed update, an old Windows.old installation, or removal of an earlier Office version. Repairing the installation is more reliable than reconstructing individual links by hand.
Fix 6: Repair Windows servicing files only when Windows is also failing
AppVIsvStream32.dll is an Office component, so SFC and DISM are secondary steps, not the first repair. Use them when Windows Update, Office setup, or other protected Windows components are failing at the same time.

- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Run Office Online Repair again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store first; SFC then checks protected Windows files against that repaired source. These commands do not replace the normal Office repair process.
If manually hunting through repair logs and repeating SFC/DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system problems; its repair actions require the full version. Reinstalling Office remains the definitive fix when the damaged file belongs to Click-to-Run.
Fix 7: Do not chase drivers or unrelated runtimes
This DLL is not a graphics driver, sound driver, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX component, or .NET file. Installing those packages is not a supported fix unless a separate error specifically identifies one of those dependencies.
Device Manager is therefore not a normal solution:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Look for a separate device warning icon.
- Update a driver only if that device has its own documented problem.
A driver update will not normally restore an Office Click-to-Run component. If you already have a separate hardware issue and manually checking many vendors is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues; driver installation through the full version is optional and unrelated to the Office DLL repair.
Windows Features also does not provide a switch for this file. Do not enable random legacy features to compensate for a missing Office component.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not run:
regsvr32 AppVIsvStream32.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, commonly used by certain COM components. An Office virtualization runtime file is not automatically a registerable COM DLL.
If regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, that does not repair the file. It only confirms that this is the wrong maintenance method. Microsoft documents the command in its regsvr32 reference.

A standalone DLL download can have the wrong:
- Architecture
- Build or Office channel
- Digital signature
- Dependency set
- File location
- Servicing relationship
It may also contain malware. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, an Office folder, or an application directory can create loader conflicts and leave the damaged Click-to-Run installation untouched.
Use Microsoft Office repair, uninstall, and reinstall procedures instead. Microsoft’s documentation confirms that Office Click-to-Run uses application virtualization and supports separate 32-bit and 64-bit Office installations in its Click-to-Run architecture guidance.

Create a test local Windows user profile and try launching Office there. If Office works in the new profile, the original profile may have damaged permissions or configuration. If files continue disappearing, run appropriate disk diagnostics and an offline malware scan.

FAQ
Is appvisvstream32.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is generally delivered with Microsoft Office Click-to-Run and its virtualization layer. It is not normally a file that should be restored to System32 or SysWOW64.
Why does a 32-bit file appear on 64-bit Windows?
Office has its own architecture. Microsoft supports 32-bit Office on 64-bit Windows, so the 32 suffix describes Office’s component rather than the Windows installation.
Does this file only belong to Office 2013?
No. Microsoft support cases involve Office 2013, Office 2016, and Microsoft 365 or Click-to-Run installations.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this error alone. Those packages are unrelated to the normal repair path for an Office Click-to-Run virtualization file.
Can I restore the file from antivirus quarantine?
Only after confirming that the file is genuine, Microsoft-signed Office software and the detection is a false positive. Otherwise, repair Office rather than restoring an unknown binary.
Will SFC fix appvisvstream32.dll?
Usually not directly. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Use it when Windows servicing is also damaged, then run Office Online Repair.
What is the correct permanent fix?
Run Online Repair first. If that fails, completely uninstall Office, restart Windows, and reinstall it from Microsoft or your organization’s official Office source.
