appxapplicabilityengine.dll: Rebuild the Windows AppX Path

By VGSources Team 9 min read

appxapplicabilityengine.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system DLL used by the AppX and MSIX package infrastructure. If Windows says it is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, repair Windows and the affected package rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What this file actually does

The file is identified as AppX Applicability Engine and is associated with Microsoft Windows. Its job is connected to deciding whether AppX or MSIX packages are applicable to a Windows installation, user, or system state.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That makes it part of Windows rather than a downloadable runtime for a particular game. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX component, .NET package, or ordinary third-party application dependency.

The normal native location is:

On 64-bit Windows, 32-bit processes use the WOW64 system view, normally represented by:

Windows handles these architecture-specific locations. Do not copy a 32-bit file over a 64-bit file, or the reverse.

A filename alone does not prove that a copy is safe. A genuine copy should be in a Windows system or servicing path, carry a Microsoft Windows digital signature, and match the Windows installation that supplied it.

There is no dependable evidence that one particular game or named desktop application causes this error. The operation that produced the message matters: note whether it happened during startup, Windows Update, a Microsoft Store installation, an MSIX installation, or while opening one specific application.

Fix 1: Update Windows and restart

Start with Windows Update because an incomplete update can leave the component store or AppX infrastructure in an inconsistent state.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every available update.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Try the operation that produced the DLL error again.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security.
  3. Select Windows Update.
  4. Select Check for updates.
  5. Install the available updates and restart.

If Windows Update itself reports an error, continue with the repair commands below. Do not keep retrying an AppX installation while the underlying Windows servicing system is failing.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

This is the primary repair for a missing or damaged appxapplicabilityengine.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker uses that repaired source to replace damaged protected system files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  6. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Leave the same elevated window open.
  3. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the Store app, MSIX package, or Windows operation again.

Do not close the Command Prompt while SFC is still scanning. The final message is important:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations means SFC found no damaged protected files.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them means the repair completed.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them means continue to the escalation steps below.

If DISM says that source files could not be found, install pending updates first and run the command again. A matching Windows installation source may be required in more difficult component-store cases.

While you are manually identifying the damaged component and repeating DISM and SFC, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions are provided by the full version. It is optional, and Windows repair remains the correct path when the file belongs to the operating system.

Fix 3: Repair or reset the affected app

If the error appears only when launching one Microsoft Store application, repair that application before attempting package-level commands.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  6. Select Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

Repair keeps the application’s data where possible. If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s stored settings or local data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Apps & features.
  4. Select the affected application.
  5. Select Advanced options, if available.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. If the error remains, select Reset.

If the application has no Repair or Reset option, uninstall it and reinstall it from Microsoft Store > Library. For an MSIX package installed through an official vendor launcher, use that launcher’s own repair, verify-files, or reinstall function.

This repairs the application package. It does not mean that the application owns appxapplicabilityengine.dll; Windows still supplies that system component.

Fix 4: Reinstall the affected Store or MSIX package

Use this step when Windows itself appears healthy but one package will not register or start.

  1. Open Microsoft Store.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select Get updates.
  5. Restart Windows.
  6. Try the application again.

If the application is still broken:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.
  2. Select the application.
  3. Choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Reinstall it from Microsoft Store or the application vendor’s official installer.

For a package that still exists locally and has a known manifest, Microsoft documents registration through PowerShell. This is an AppX package operation, not DLL registration:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Add-AppxPackage -Path $ManifestPath -Register -DisableDevelopmentMode

Do not substitute a guessed path for $ManifestPath. Use this only when you know which package and manifest you are repairing. An incorrect registration command can create a different package error.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine

Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious file. Check the record before restoring anything.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections.
  6. Expand any item related to the Windows system file.
  7. Confirm the detected path, detection name, and action.

Restore a file only when the path and Microsoft signature establish that it is the genuine Windows component and the detection is clearly a false positive. If the file was found in a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, or beside an unrelated executable, do not restore it merely because its name matches.

Run a full scan if the file repeatedly disappears or reappears in an unusual location. If malware is suspected, disconnect from untrusted networks and complete the security investigation before copying or restoring system files.

Fix 6: Verify the file location and signature

This step distinguishes a missing Windows component from a suspicious lookalike.

  5. Open the Digital Signatures tab, if present.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft Windows as the signer.

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit process may access the system file through the WOW64 view represented by %WINDIR%SysWOW64. This does not mean you should manually maintain two copies. DISM and SFC service the correct files for the installed Windows architecture.

A file copied from another computer may have the wrong build, architecture, servicing state, or dependency set even when its filename is identical.

Do not use regsvr32 for this file

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command for every DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AppxApplicabilityEngine.dll is part of Windows AppX infrastructure, not an ordinary COM component that you should register manually. Running a command such as this is therefore not a recommended repair:

regsvr32 AppxApplicabilityEngine.dll

It may produce an entry-point error and will not repair the Windows component store or AppX package database.

Do not download a replacement DLL

Random DLL download sites are unsafe sources for this file. A download can contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or fail because the actual problem is a missing dependency or damaged component store.

The safe sources are:

  • Windows Update
  • DISM and SFC
  • Microsoft Store
  • The official installer for the affected application
  • A matching Windows repair installation

Do not copy the file beside an executable or into an application directory unless the application developer explicitly documents that deployment model. Do not select a replacement based only on filename, reported size, or a version number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 7: Do not chase drivers unless the evidence points there

This is not a device driver DLL. Updating a graphics, chipset, storage, or printer driver is not the normal fix for a missing AppX system component.

Consider driver work only if the same incident includes device failures, disk errors, or a recent hardware change:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant device category.
  4. Right-click the affected device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Select Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel when Device Manager cannot find a suitable driver. While checking dozens of devices manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; driver installation through the full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for repairing Windows or reinstalling the affected application.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file

If both tools report that they cannot complete the repair:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Restart Windows and run DISM again.
  2. Run SFC again after DISM completes.
  3. Review the CBS log for the failed component repair.
  4. Check whether the problem began immediately after a Windows update.
  5. If appropriate, uninstall the most recent problematic update.
  6. Try System Restore if a suitable restore point exists.
  7. Perform an in-place Windows repair installation using matching installation media.
  8. Back up personal files before considering a reset or clean reinstallation.

System Restore can roll back system files, settings, and installed programs without normally affecting personal files. It is useful when the error began after a recent system change and a restore point is available.

A reset or clean Windows installation is the final escalation, not the first response to a single AppX error.

FAQ

Is appxapplicabilityengine.dll malware?

The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component, but the filename alone proves nothing. Check its Windows system location, valid Microsoft signature, and the result of a security scan.

Is it a downloadable runtime?

No. It is not a separately installed Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or game runtime. Windows supplies it as part of its AppX and MSIX infrastructure.

Why does “specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?

Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL. The message does not always mean that the named file itself is absent. DISM and SFC are safer than copying another DLL.

Should I copy it from another Windows computer?

No. The other installation may use a different architecture, build, servicing state, or dependency set. Repair the current Windows installation instead.

Does the error mean one particular game caused it?

Not necessarily. The error can occur during Windows servicing, Store activity, AppX/MSIX installation, or while launching an application that depends on the package infrastructure. Identify the operation that triggered it before choosing an app-specific fix.

When should I reinstall the application?

Reinstall the application when only one Store or MSIX package fails and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC complete successfully. Reinstalling the app will not repair a system-wide Windows component problem.
