appxprovider.dll is a Microsoft Windows component, not a normal third-party application runtime. It is the DISM App Package (.appx) Provider, used when Windows services or provisions AppX and MSIX packages.
The normal location is:
C:WindowsSystem32DismAppxProvider.dll
If Windows reports that the file is missing, cannot be loaded, or is corrupted, repair Windows through its own servicing tools rather than downloading a replacement DLL. Follow these steps in order.
Identify appxprovider.dll
| Item | Expected information |
|---|---|
| File | AppxProvider.dll |
| Role | DISM provider for AppX and AppXBundle servicing |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Product | Microsoft Windows Operating System |
| Normal path | C:WindowsSystem32DismAppxProvider.dll |
| Version | Depends on the installed Windows build |
| Architecture | Must match the Windows component supplied by your installation |
A Windows 10 example identifies the file as version 10.0.19041.1, 64-bit, under System32Dism. Older catalog entries include Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 versions, but those are not suitable replacement targets for current Windows installations.
DISM uses this provider for operations such as adding, removing, and listing provisioned AppX packages. That is why the error may appear during Windows Update, Microsoft Store installation, Sysprep, image servicing, or commands such as Add-ProvisionedAppxPackage.

Check the file’s location and signature
Before repairing anything, determine whether the file is genuinely missing or whether another program is showing a generic DLL message.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
text
C:WindowsSystem32Dism
- Look for
AppxProvider.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs.
A genuine system copy should be in the Windows DISM directory and should identify Microsoft Corporation as its signer. The exact version varies by Windows build, so do not reject a valid file solely because its version differs from an example found elsewhere.
To check the file from Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
cmd
dir C:WindowsSystem32DismAppxProvider.dll
If the file exists there but the error names a copy in an application folder, download folder, or temporary directory, the caller may be loading the wrong copy. Do not overwrite the copy manually. Verify the complete error and inspect the application or servicing operation that produced it.
A temporary copy is not automatically malicious. DISM can use provider files from temporary working directories during servicing. However, an unsigned or unexpectedly duplicated file deserves a security check.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A failed or incomplete update can leave Windows components out of sync.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- On Windows 11, select Check for updates. On Windows 10, select Check for updates in Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the check until no further updates are offered.
- Retry the operation that produced the
AppxProvider.dllerror.
If the problem started immediately after a specific update, open Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates. Remove only the recent update that clearly matches the timing, then restart. System Restore is another suitable choice when the failure followed an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or other recent system change.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
DISM repairs the component store that Windows uses to restore protected files. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that repaired store.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Recommended Free Tools
- Wait for it to complete. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When DISM finishes, run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the failing command or application again.
Successful results include DISM reporting that the restore operation completed and SFC reporting that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. If SFC says it could not fix some files, restart and run the SFC command once more after DISM has completed.
The targeted SFC check is useful when the normal path is the specific concern:

If the file is missing, SFC may need DISM to repair the component store first.
Repeatedly hunting for versions and running SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can make diagnosis unnecessarily difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported Windows problems and show what needs attention; its repair action is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the direct repair path.

Fix 3: Use a matching repair source
/RestoreHealth normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If Windows reports that source files could not be found, use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition and build.
First identify the correct image index from the media. Replace X: with the media drive and INDEX with the matching index:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:Sourcesinstall.wim:INDEX /LimitAccess
For example, do not assume that index 1 is correct. The source must match the installed edition and build. Using an image from a different release can fail or leave Windows with mismatched components.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again.
Fix 4: Check whether the failure is an AppX or MSIX problem
If the error appears while installing a Store app, provisioning a Windows image, running Sysprep, or executing a DISM AppX command, the provider may not be the actual root cause.

The failure may instead involve:
- An invalid AppX or MSIX package
- A missing dependency
- An incorrect package architecture
- A licensing problem
- A broken provisioning state
- A package that is not appropriate for the target Windows image
Record the complete command and error code. Then review the relevant package name and inspect:
C:WindowsLogsDISMdism.log
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log
A package-specific failure will not be fixed by copying another AppxProvider.dll into System32. Repair Windows first, then correct the package, dependency, or provisioning configuration identified in the log.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy, or it may interfere with a servicing operation.

- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detection history.
- Search for
AppxProvider.dll. - Check the recorded path.
- Restore the file only if it was located at the expected Windows path and its Microsoft signature is valid.
- Run a full security scan.
- Restart Windows and retry the operation.
Do not restore an unsigned file merely because its filename matches. A copy in a download folder, application directory, or unusual temporary location is not automatically genuine.
Fix 6: Check architecture and stale replacements
Windows component files must match the installed operating system and build. A 32-bit historical file cannot safely replace a current 64-bit Windows component, and copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit installation is equally inappropriate.
Do not use older Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 catalog versions as replacements for Windows 10 or Windows 11. Windows servicing is the safe source for the correct file.
If you previously copied a DLL manually, undo that change only through a supported repair process. Run DISM and SFC instead of trying to identify a replacement by file size or filename alone.
Fix 7: Consider drivers only when the complete error points to one
A driver installation can coincide with system corruption or an AppX deployment failure, but AppxProvider.dll itself is a Windows DISM provider, not a graphics, audio, or game runtime DLL.
If the complete error also names a driver, or Device Manager shows a related warning:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties → Driver.
- Check the driver provider and date.
- Use Update Driver, or obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, use Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver when that button is available.
Finding the correct driver manually can mean identifying the hardware, Windows architecture, and compatible release, then repeating the process for several devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs updating; driver installation through the full version is optional and is not required to repair AppxProvider.dll.
Fix 8: Use Windows repair recovery
On supported Windows 11 systems, the repair reinstall reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings.
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the computer connected to power and restart when prompted.
This option may be unavailable because of the Windows version, missing updates, or device-management policies.

If the computer will not boot, open Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt. Determine the Windows drive letter first, because it may not be C: in recovery. If Windows is mounted as D:, the commands are:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
SFC /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows
If repair still fails, back up important files and perform an in-place reinstall using matching Windows installation media. Choose the option to preserve applications and files when Windows Setup offers it.

What not to do
Do not download a replacement DLL
Random DLL download sites sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong Windows version, or the wrong architecture. Even a clean file may not match the component store and may leave the underlying update or provisioning failure unresolved.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or an official repair reinstall instead.
Do not run regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that implement registration interfaces. It does not restore a missing Windows component or repair the component store, and there is no general Microsoft instruction to register AppxProvider.dll manually.
Do not reinstall unrelated runtimes
Visual C++, DirectX, and .NET repairs apply when the complete error names a file from those runtimes. They do not reinstall the Windows DISM AppX provider. Similarly, a game launcher’s file verification can help only when the game owns the missing file, not when the expected path is under C:WindowsSystem32Dism.

Is AppxProvider.dll a game DLL?
No. It is a Microsoft Windows component used by DISM for AppX and MSIX servicing. A game or application may trigger the error indirectly, but reinstalling a game is not the normal repair.
Why does the error mention a temporary folder?
DISM may load provider files from temporary working directories during servicing. The location alone does not prove malware. Check the file’s signature, the parent process, and the operation that generated the error.
Should I replace the file with a 32-bit version?
No. Do not choose a file by filename, size, or an old catalog entry. Let Windows servicing restore the version and architecture required by the installed build.
What should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact message, Windows edition and build, the command or task that triggered it, and whether the issue began after an update, cleanup tool, antivirus action, Sysprep run, or AppX/MSIX deployment. Include relevant entries from:
