instup.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded. instup.dll is an Avast Antivirus Installer module, so the reliable fix is to repair or reinstall Avast rather than copy a DLL into a Windows folder.
You may see messages such as:
The program can't start because instup.dll is missing from your computer.
Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
There was a problem starting instup.dll.
The specified module could not be found.

Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.
instup.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
These are common Windows loader variants. They describe a missing file, a damaged module, an unavailable dependency, or a broken Avast installation. They are not proof that Windows itself should contain instup.dll.
Which fix applies to you
Use this list to choose the shortest sensible path:
- Avast still opens: Repair Avast from Windows Apps and Features.
- Avast disappeared, will not repair, or its setup is damaged: Remove it with Avast Clear, then reinstall the complete product from Avast’s official installer.
- Windows Security reports that the file was quarantined: Inspect Protection History before restoring anything.
- The error appeared after installing or removing AVG: Remove leftover security software properly and install one supported product.
- Several unrelated Windows applications also fail: Run DISM and SFC, then investigate broader Windows corruption.
- The message appears in a game or unrelated application: Do not place Avast files in the game folder. Check whether the copy is malicious or left behind by an incomplete uninstall.
- You were considering
regsvr32, Visual C++, DirectX, or a random DLL download: Skip those as first-line fixes. They do not normally repair an Avast installer module.
What instup.dll is and where it belongs
instup.dll is associated with the Avast Antivirus Installer. Avast uses installer components for product installation, maintenance, updates, and self-repair. Public file metadata also associates related installer files with AVG because Avast and AVG share product technology, although Avast does not clearly document the exact product lineage of every current installer DLL.

Avast’s documentation identifies the installer executable as instup.exe inside a setup directory similar to:
C:Program FilesAVAST SoftwareAvastsetupinstup.exe
That makes an instup.dll located in the Avast installation or setup tree plausible. It does not belong in:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
The filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine. Check its location, publisher signature, and security detections. A copy in Downloads, Temp, a user profile, a browser folder, or a game directory deserves investigation.
Historical public databases list different architectures and old versions of this file. Do not select a DLL based on a filename, an old version number, or whether Windows is 64-bit. A 64-bit Windows installation can run 32-bit Avast components, and the correct module must match the complete product installation.

Fix 1: Repair Avast from Apps and Features
Repair is the best first step when Avast is still listed in Windows. It replaces damaged product components while preserving the installation more reliably than manual file copying.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Apps and Features.
- Find Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Select Uninstall again if Windows asks you to confirm.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Wait for the Avast Setup maintenance window to open.
- Select Repair.
- Confirm the repair.
- Restart Windows if Avast requests it.
After restarting, open Avast and check for updates. Then launch the application that produced the error. The repair worked if Avast starts normally, its update screen functions, and the instup.dll message no longer appears.
Avast repair can reset some settings. If the maintenance window never appears, or the repair option is missing, continue to the clean reinstall.
For an Avast installation whose interface is unavailable, the documented setup control command may work:

To run it, press Windows key, type Command Prompt, right-click Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, paste the command, and press Enter. The path can differ for a 32-bit installation, an AVG installation, or a customized deployment. If Windows reports that the path does not exist, do not create it manually. Use Avast Clear instead.

Fix 2: Remove Avast with Avast Clear and reinstall it
A broken update, interrupted installation, failed self-repair, or partial uninstall can leave Avast with missing installer files. In that situation, reinstall the complete package so the installer can supply matching files and dependencies.
Use Avast’s official Avast Clear utility. Do not delete Avast folders manually.
- Download Avast Clear from Avast’s official website using another working browser if necessary.
- Save the utility where you can find it.
- Close open applications.
- Run the utility as administrator.
- Approve the security prompt.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Allow it to restart Windows into Safe Mode if requested.
- Complete the removal.
- Restart Windows normally.
- Download the correct Avast product from Avast’s official installation-files page.
- Choose the online or offline installer appropriate for your product.
- For Avast Free Antivirus, the online package is named:
avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete setup, restart if requested, and update Avast.
If the online installer fails repeatedly, use Avast’s offline installer. It carries more of the installation package locally and can avoid a failed download or partially available setup service.
Before reinstalling, remove other antivirus products that may conflict with Avast. Restart Windows after removal. Install one supported antivirus product rather than combining files from Avast and AVG directories.
The reinstall worked if Avast opens, updates without an installer error, and the affected application no longer reports instup.dll. If the same error returns immediately, inspect quarantine and the file’s path before trying Windows repair commands.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Windows Security or another security product may have quarantined or removed an Avast installer module. That can happen after a detection, a damaged file, or a change in security software.
To inspect Microsoft Defender’s records:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Find the event associated with
instup.dll. - Expand it and inspect the detection name, original path, and publisher information.
Microsoft keeps Protection History events for a limited period, so an older quarantine event may no longer be visible.

If the path is Downloads, Temp, a game folder, or an unfamiliar user directory, do not restore it. Remove the suspicious copy and reinstall Avast from its official source instead. If another security product quarantined the file, use that product’s quarantine interface and follow the same verification principle.

Fix 4: Check for incomplete Avast or AVG removal
Mixed remnants can cause an old component to request instup.dll after Avast or AVG has been removed. They can also leave services, scheduled tasks, or shortcuts pointing to a deleted setup directory.
Use the official removal utility for the product that remains installed or partially removed. Restart when it finishes, then install only the product you intend to use.

Do not copy an Avast DLL into an AVG folder, or an AVG DLL into an Avast folder. Even when the products share technology, the surrounding installer files, architecture, configuration, and update channel may not match.
If the error appears only after launching an old shortcut:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Look for a deleted Avast or AVG path.
- Remove the obsolete shortcut.
- Reinstall the current security product if you still need it.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components when other programs are failing
DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected Windows system files. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party Avast DLL, so use them when several unrelated applications are also failing or Windows itself shows corruption.
First run DISM:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart again. Microsoft documents DISM repair for the Windows component store and SFC for protected system files.
If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, or SFC reports that it could not repair everything, do not assume that instup.dll has been restored. Repeat the Avast repair or clean reinstall instead.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows issues and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling Avast remains the definitive fix for an Avast-owned file.
Fix 6: Update Windows and investigate drivers only when relevant
Install pending Windows updates and restart:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
A graphics driver or chipset driver is not a normal cause of an Avast installer DLL error. Investigate drivers only if Device Manager shows a warning, another application names a driver-related DLL, or the failure began after a driver change.

To check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, and Storage controllers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if a driver is installed.
Avoid randomly replacing drivers when only Avast reports instup.dll. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify which versions need attention; the driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling Avast when Avast owns the missing file.
Why common DLL fixes do not help
Do not download instup.dll from a random DLL site
A standalone download can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an old build, or a modified file. It may also leave the rest of the Avast installation broken. A copied DLL in System32 can create version and servicing problems while failing to fix the original update or uninstall failure.
Use Avast’s official repair process, Avast Clear, and Avast’s official online or offline installers.
Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are for Windows components and shared system libraries. Avast’s installer module belongs with Avast’s own installation tree. Copying it to a system folder does not register the product or repair its update configuration.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchDo not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. An installer module is not automatically a self-registering COM library. Registration will not recreate a missing Avast installation.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its purpose. If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that is expected for many ordinary DLLs and does not identify the repair.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET by default
Those runtimes can matter when an error names a runtime DLL or the Avast installer explicitly reports a missing dependency. They are not the first-line solution for an Avast installer module. Reinstalling unrelated runtimes can add more variables without repairing Avast.
If the problem began after a major system change
When many applications fail after a recent update, cleanup operation, driver installation, or system change, consider System Restore:
- Press Windows key.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restoration.
Microsoft explains point-in-time restoration. It can revert applications, settings, and recent changes, so use it only when the timing supports that diagnosis.
FAQ
Is instup.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with the Avast Antivirus Installer and is not a standard Windows system DLL.

Is instup.dll safe?
A copy in the official Avast installation tree with a valid Avast signature is expected. The filename by itself is not proof of authenticity. Verify its path, publisher, signature, and security detections.
Should I download a replacement DLL?
No. Repair or reinstall Avast from its official installer. A standalone file can be malicious, mismatched, or unable to fix the damaged installation.
Can SFC restore instup.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files. Use it when broader Windows corruption is suspected, then repair or reinstall Avast separately.
Will regsvr32 instup.dll fix the error?
Usually no. regsvr32 is for registerable DLLs and does not rebuild Avast’s installation or update files.
Why does Windows say “specified module could not be found” when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency required by instup.dll, or the module may be damaged or incompatible. Reinstalling the complete Avast package is safer than guessing which dependency to copy.
What if the message appears while starting a game?
Do not put Avast files in the game directory. Check the shortcut, installed software, and file location. An unrelated game should not normally request an Avast installer module; a bundled or leftover copy may be suspicious.
Does 64-bit Windows require a 64-bit instup.dll?
Not necessarily. Windows 64-bit can run 32-bit Avast components. Let the official Avast installer supply the matching architecture rather than choosing a DLL manually.
Preventing another instup.dll failure
Keep Windows updated, allow Avast updates to finish, and restart when its installer requests it. Avoid forced shutdowns during antivirus maintenance. Do not use cleanup utilities that remove unknown Avast setup files, and do not manually delete Avast directories during an uninstall.
If Avast becomes damaged again, start with Apps and Features → Avast → Uninstall → Repair. If that fails, use Avast Clear and reinstall the complete official package instead of replacing one DLL.
