lameenc.dll is usually an MP3-encoding library installed by a third-party audio application, not a Windows component. The safest fix is to identify the program requesting it, then repair or reinstall that program from its official installer instead of copying a random DLL into System32.
What this file actually does
An audio application loads an encoder library when it needs to create MP3 files. The no-underscore filename lameenc.dll is most strongly associated with older Windows versions of Image-Line FL Studio, although another audio program may ship its own private build.
This file is not:
- A Windows system DLL
- A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable file
- A DirectX component
- A file that Windows Update normally installs
- A library that should generally be registered with
regsvr32
The exact file name matters. These are related, but they are not interchangeable:
lameenc.dll— commonly associated with an application-supplied encoder, particularly FL Studio.LAMEenc_x64.dll— a 64-bit FL Studio encoder filename documented by Image-Line.LAMEenc.dll— a separate FL Studio encoder filename used by historical 32-bit installations.lame_enc.dll— a legacy filename used by older LAME and Audacity integrations.
Do not rename lame_enc.dll to lameenc.dll, or rename an arbitrary 32-bit file to LAMEenc_x64.dll. The application may require a particular architecture, interface, and build.

Causes and the right fix
| Symptom or recent change | Most likely cause | Best first fix |
|---|---|---|
| FL Studio will not start | Damaged, incomplete, or mismatched FL Studio installation | Run the current official Image-Line installer over the existing installation |
| FL Studio opens but MP3 export fails | Missing encoder file, incompatible encoder, or unsupported audio settings | Check Audio Settings, then repair FL Studio |
The message names lame_enc.dll |
Older Audacity or another legacy LAME integration | Upgrade or reinstall the application that requests it |
| The file disappeared after a security scan | Antivirus quarantine or deletion | Review Protection History, then reinstall unless the file is clearly trusted |
| The error started after moving the program folder | Broken application path or missing companion files | Restore the original installation or reinstall to a normal application folder |
| A 32-bit program requests the file | Wrong architecture or incomplete 32-bit installation | Install the matching application build and its own encoder |
| Several unrelated programs report missing DLLs | Broader Windows, storage, or malware problem | Scan the system, check disk health, and investigate Windows corruption |
| The error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” | Damaged, incompatible, or incorrectly replaced DLL | Remove the replacement and reinstall the requesting application |
Fix 1: Identify the application before replacing anything
Read the complete error message and record the exact spelling. Note whether the failure occurs when:
- Windows starts
- A particular audio application opens
- An MP3 export begins
- A project loads
- A converter or media player processes a file
Then identify the program that owns the error.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes.
- Look for the audio application named in the error.
- Right-click it and choose Open file location.
- Inspect the application folder and its nearby subfolders for
lameenc.dll,LAMEenc.dll, orLAMEenc_x64.dll.
If the message does not identify the program, check the shortcut you used immediately before the error appeared. You can also search File Explorer for lameenc.dll, but treat the result as a clue rather than proof of authenticity.
Right-click any matching file, choose Properties, and check its Location, Digital Signatures tab if present, and Details tab. A filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine.
Fix 2: Repair FL Studio with the official installer
If FL Studio is the affected program, reinstalling or repairing FL Studio is the primary solution. Image-Line’s documented repair method is to download the latest FL Studio installer and run it over the existing installation without uninstalling first.
Before starting, close FL Studio and back up important projects and custom settings.
- Open a browser and go to Image-Line’s official FL Studio download page.
- Download the current installer for your edition.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup screens.
- Keep the existing FL Studio installation selected when the installer offers a destination.
- Complete the installation without first removing the old copy.
- Restart Windows.
- Open FL Studio and test the action that previously failed.
If FL Studio opens but MP3 export still fails:
- Open Options > Audio Settings.
- Check the project or export sample rate.
- Use 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz, which are the sample rates covered by Image-Line’s MP3-export guidance.
- Export a short test MP3.
Older FL Studio installations can contain separate 32-bit and 64-bit encoder files. A 64-bit installation may request LAMEenc_x64.dll, while an older 32-bit installation may use LAMEenc.dll. Current internal filenames and locations can change between releases, so use the installer rather than guessing which file to copy.
A narrowly documented older FL Studio exception
Image-Line documented a compatibility procedure for some older FL Studio 11 and 12 installations. That procedure involves obtaining a compatible 64-bit LAME encoder, renaming it to LAMEenc_x64.dll, and replacing the copy in:

C:Program Files (x86)Image-LineShared
This is an application-specific exception, not a general recommendation to download DLL files. Use it only when the Image-Line instructions for your exact FL Studio version call for it. Do not place the file in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
If the current official installer does not restore the encoder, contact Image-Line support with the exact error, FL Studio version, Windows architecture, and the path of the requesting executable.
Fix 3: Repair an older Audacity or another audio program
If the error says lame_enc.dll with an underscore, you are dealing with a different legacy dependency.
For an old Audacity installation:
- Save your Audacity projects and exported recordings.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the old Audacity installation.
- Select the three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Audacity release from its official source.
- Open a project and export a short MP3.
Current Audacity releases no longer require a separate LAME installation in the way older releases did. Do not substitute lameenc.dll for lame_enc.dll.
For Winamp, a media converter, a game, or another audio application, use that program’s own Repair, Update, or Verify files feature. If none exists, uninstall the application from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart, and install a current copy from the software developer.

- The file came from a trusted, intact installation.
- The original path belongs to the application you installed.
- The security alert is clearly a false positive or an application-file quarantine.
- The application developer’s support guidance confirms the file.
If the source is uncertain, do not restore it. Reinstall the application from its official installer and run another scan. Protection History is retained for a limited period, so save the detection details before they disappear.
Fix 5: Confirm the application architecture
Architecture mismatches are common with old audio software.

- A 64-bit application may need
LAMEenc_x64.dllor another 64-bit encoder. - A similarly named DLL from a different program is not a valid substitute.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Read System type under device specifications.
To check a running application:
- Open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns if needed.
- Add the architecture column where available, or check the application’s vendor documentation.
The reliable repair is to reinstall the correct application build. Do not force compatibility by renaming files.
Fix 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, audio, or chipset driver does not normally provide lameenc.dll. Update drivers only if the problem began with a broader audio-device failure, application crash, or hardware change.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected audio device.
- Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a graphics-related application, repeat the process under Display adapters. Prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official driver when Windows does not find a suitable update.
Manually checking several hardware pages and matching driver packages can be tedious, especially after a clean Windows installation. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to show which drivers are outdated; its full version performs the driver installation, but reinstalling the affected audio application remains the definitive fix for an app-owned DLL.

Do not expect a driver update to recreate a missing private encoder file.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this encoder
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An MP3 encoder is normally loaded directly by the application, so registration is generally irrelevant.

If you run:
regsvr32 lameenc.dll
you may receive an error stating that the module was loaded but the entry point DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not mean Windows needs another registration command. Remove the command from your troubleshooting plan and repair the application instead.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components only for broader corruption
lameenc.dll is normally an application file, so SFC and DISM are not expected to recreate it. Use these tools when Windows itself shows additional corruption, such as broken built-in applications, repeated servicing failures, or several protected system files failing at once.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application.
If DISM reports that it cannot repair the image, repeat the process after checking Windows Update and available disk space. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application. If both complete successfully but the same application still reports lameenc.dll, reinstall the application because its private encoder is still missing.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time while leaving the application’s files untouched. Outbyte PC Repair can scan and show system issues; its full version performs repairs, but it is not required, and reinstalling the program that owns lameenc.dll remains the definitive fix.
Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver, application, or system change and application repair did not help.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs to review the expected changes.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally does not remove personal documents, but it can roll back programs, drivers, system files, and settings. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the application’s official installer.
If the error survives a clean reinstall
Work through this final checklist:
- Confirm the exact filename, including underscores and capitalization.
- Identify the executable that requests it.
- Inspect that executable’s installation directory and application-local shared folders.
- Confirm whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check Windows Security Protection History.
- Test whether another Windows user account has the same problem.
- Open Event Viewer and inspect Windows Logs > Application for the failing executable.
- Check the disk if files repeatedly disappear or installations fail.
- Run a full Windows Security scan if malware or unexplained deletion is possible.
- Contact the application vendor with the error text, executable path, architecture, security-history entry, and installation results.
Do not use registry cleaners, mass DLL registration, or random DLL catalogs as the next step. The path, calling executable, and application installer provide the evidence needed to make the correct repair.
FAQ

Will installing Visual C++ Redistributable fix it?
Usually not. Microsoft runtimes do not normally provide this application-specific encoder. Install a runtime only when the application vendor specifically identifies it as a separate missing dependency.
Can I download lameenc.dll and copy it to System32?
Do not do that. The file may contain malware, target the wrong architecture, or belong to a different application. It also leaves the original installation damaged and may not resolve the error.
Recommended Free Tools
Is lameenc.dll the same as lame_enc.dll?
No. Verify the error character-for-character. Older Audacity integrations commonly used lame_enc.dll, while FL Studio documentation refers to LAMEenc.dll and LAMEenc_x64.dll.
Why does MP3 export fail while FL Studio still opens?
The encoder may be missing or incompatible even though the main application starts. Check Options > Audio Settings, use 44.1 or 48 kHz, and repair FL Studio with the official installer.
Should I install DirectX or enable a Windows Feature?
Not for this file by itself. Windows Features and DirectX do not normally supply an application’s private MP3 encoder. Use those repairs only when a separate error specifically identifies them.
What if antivirus removed the file?
Review Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. Restore only a file with trusted provenance. Otherwise reinstall the affected application and scan the system.
