appxsip.dll is a Microsoft Windows component used when Windows checks the signatures and trust information of AppX and MSIX packages. If it is missing, corrupt, blocked, or loaded from the wrong location, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
AppxSip.dll means Appx Subject Interface Package. It belongs to the Windows signing and trust path for packaged applications, including:

.appxfiles.appxbundlefiles.msixfiles.msixbundlefiles
Windows uses this path when installing, launching, validating, or signing packaged applications. That is why the error may appear when opening a Microsoft Store app, an AppX/MSIX installer, a launcher, or a packaged desktop application.

On a 64-bit Windows installation, the normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32AppxSip.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64AppxSip.dll
Despite the name, System32 contains the native 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows. SysWOW64 contains the 32-bit equivalents. Microsoft explains this redirection in its documentation for the Windows File System Redirector.
Do not use an old file version simply because its filename matches. Windows servicing expects a file that matches the installed Windows build and architecture.
Causes and symptoms at a glance
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| “appxsip.dll is missing” | The protected Windows file was deleted, quarantined, or corrupted | Check Windows Security, then run DISM and SFC |
| “appxsip.dll was not found” | Windows or an application cannot locate the file or a dependency | Check the full path and repair Windows |
| “Could not be loaded” | The file, a dependency, or the AppX package may be damaged | Repair Windows, then inspect AppX logs |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong build, corrupted file, or an incorrectly bundled copy | Check the file signature and location |
| Only one Store or packaged app fails | The application package or registration may be damaged | Repair, reset, or reinstall that application |
| Several Windows features fail | A Windows component store or system file problem is more likely | Run DISM before SFC |
| The issue began after antivirus action | The file may be quarantined | Review Protection history before restoring anything |
| The error names a path inside an application folder | The application may be incorrectly loading its own copy | Do not replace the Windows copy until the path is verified |
The phrase “specified module could not be found” does not always mean AppxSip.dll itself is absent. It can also indicate that a dependency required by the loading process is missing.
Fix 1: Check the file path and digital signature
Do this before copying or deleting anything.
- Press Windows key + E.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
AppxSip.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and that the signer is Microsoft.
A legitimate copy can also exist in a Windows SDK or developer-tool directory. A copy outside the Windows directories is not automatically malicious, but it should not replace the protected operating-system copy.
If the file is absent, has an invalid signature, or appears under an unexpected executable directory, do not download another copy. Continue with the Windows repair steps below.
Fix 2: Review Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have removed or quarantined a system file after a detection or false positive.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for
AppxSip.dllor a related Windows component. - Open an entry to see its original path and action.
- Restore the file only if the original location and Microsoft signature are clear and you are confident the detection was incorrect.
If the entry identifies malware or the file came from an application directory, leave it quarantined and repair Windows instead. Microsoft’s guidance for reviewing these actions is in Protection history in Windows Security.
After repairing Windows, run a full scan. If you suspect an active infection, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
Fix 3: Run DISM, then SFC
This is the main repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of AppxSip.dll. Run the commands in this order because SFC may need the repaired component store as its source.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents this DISM-before-SFC repair process.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run the two commands again. If DISM reports that source files could not be found, install pending Windows updates and retry. If the same error remains, use a matching official Windows installation source with DISM’s /Source and /LimitAccess options, or proceed to an in-place repair.
If repeatedly hunting through Windows components and interpreting DISM and SFC results is slowing you down, Outbyte PC Repair can show what it finds in a scan; its full version performs the repair, but it is optional and does not replace the definitive fix when the AppX package or Windows installation itself is damaged.
Fix 4: Install pending Windows updates
A failed update can leave the component store or packaged-app infrastructure incomplete.
Recommended Free Tools
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Run DISM and SFC again.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Open Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and repeat the repair commands.
On supported Windows 11 systems, Microsoft also provides a repair reinstall:
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. The option may not appear on every installation.
Fix 5: Repair the specific AppX or MSIX application
If only one Store app, launcher, installer, or packaged desktop program fails, the Windows DLL may be intact and the package may be damaged.
Repair or reset a Store app
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Terminate.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
- If it still fails, return to the same screen and select Reset.
Resetting may remove that application’s local data.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For software installed through a vendor launcher, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Reinstall function. For an MSIX or AppX installer, obtain a fresh package from the vendor or Microsoft Store source. Do not replace AppxSip.dll inside the application folder unless the application vendor explicitly provides a supported repair procedure.
To inspect package-specific failures:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Applications and Services Logs.
- Expand Microsoft and then Windows.
- Open AppxPackagingOM.
- Select Microsoft-Windows-AppxPackaging/Operational.
- Look for an event at the time of the failure.
If the log points to signature validation, package registration, or deployment rather than a missing system file, repair the application package instead of repeatedly replacing Windows files.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a Windows update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or other system change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, and settings. It does not normally remove personal documents, but review the affected programs list before confirming. Microsoft’s explanation is available in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or device-driver reinstall is not a normal fix for AppxSip.dll. Use Device Manager only if the error began with a device problem, a driver update, or a packaged application that depends on a particular device.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties and check the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver or Roll Back Driver where appropriate.
- Restart Windows.
If the device has a warning icon, download its driver only from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page.

If identifying which of many installed drivers is stale is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show the driver findings; driver installation through its full version is optional, and it is not a substitute for DISM and SFC when the Windows DLL itself is damaged.

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide a modified file, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible Windows build. Even a genuine-looking replacement may not repair the component store, package signature, or dependency that caused the error.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, an official Windows repair reinstall, or the official source for the affected application.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 calls a DLL’s registration entry point. It does not restore missing protected Windows files or repair the component store. AppX trust components are not repaired by repeatedly registering them. Microsoft’s documentation describes the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 reference.
Do not start with unrelated runtimes
Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and graphics-driver packages do not normally restore this Windows component. Install those only when the error specifically identifies one of their files or the application vendor requires them.
When to perform an in-place repair or clean reinstall
Use an official in-place Windows repair when:
- DISM cannot find repair sources
- SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired corruption
- Windows Update repair does not complete
- Several Windows features fail
- The file is missing or invalid after multiple repairs
Back up important data first. Use matching official Windows installation media and choose the option that preserves files and applications when available.

What to collect if the error remains
Record the following before asking for support:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 edition and build
- 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- The exact executable, installer, or app producing the message
- The complete path shown in the error
- The exact error wording
- DISM and SFC results
- The relevant Event Viewer entry
- Whether Windows Security quarantined a file
- Whether the issue began after an update, cleanup tool, antivirus action, driver installation, or disk problem
This information distinguishes a damaged Windows component from a broken AppX/MSIX package, a missing dependency, or an application that is incorrectly loading a DLL from its own folder.
FAQ
Is appxsip.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is part of Microsoft Windows and supports signature and trust processing for AppX and MSIX packages.
Should I copy the file from SysWOW64 to System32?
No. Those directories serve different architectures on 64-bit Windows. Use DISM and SFC so Windows can restore the correct build and architecture.
Why does a game mention appxsip.dll?
The game may use a packaged launcher, an MSIX-based installer, or another Windows package component. Public evidence does not establish that any particular game uniquely requires this DLL. Check whether the error path points to Windows or the game’s own directory.
Can regsvr32 appxsip.dll fix the error?
Generally, no. Registration is not the supported repair method for this protected Windows trust component.
What if the file exists but the error continues?
Check its full path and Microsoft signature, then run DISM and SFC. If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application and inspect the AppX operational log. A dependency or package-signature failure can produce the same wording.
Could malware be responsible?
It is possible, especially if files repeatedly disappear or signatures are invalid. Review Windows Security Protection history, run a full scan, and use Microsoft Defender Offline scan when appropriate. Do not restore a quarantined file without verifying its original location and signature.
