The appxsysprep.dll file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component used by Sysprep to validate and clean Microsoft Store and AppX packages.
Do not begin by downloading a replacement DLL. First determine whether Sysprep is reporting an AppX package-state problem or Windows is genuinely missing or unable to load the system file.

Which fix applies to you
Use the matching path below:
- Sysprep fails and the log mentions
AppxSysprep.dll,0x80073cf2,0x3cf2, or a specific package: repair the AppX package registration and provisioning state. - Windows says the file is missing or corrupt outside Sysprep: install pending updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- The problem started after antivirus activity: check Windows Security Protection history before repairing system files.
- The error followed an upgrade or feature update: inspect the Sysprep logs for a migration-specific package, including MiracastView on affected Windows 10 upgrades.
- A game or unrelated application is trying to load the file: that program may be referencing a Windows deployment component incorrectly. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a general fix for this file.
- Sysprep still fails after removing the named package: inspect the first package-specific error in the log rather than repeatedly replacing the DLL.
What appxsysprep.dll does
AppxSysprep.dll is the AppX Sysprep Provider. Windows Sysprep loads it while generalizing or validating an image so it can check Microsoft Store and AppX packages.

It is part of Windows servicing, not a normal downloadable runtime. It does not come from Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a graphics driver, or a game launcher. The correct file version depends on the installed Windows build and cumulative updates, so there is no single safe version or file size for every PC.

Fix the AppX package named in the Sysprep log
This is the most likely solution when the error occurs during Sysprep.
1. Read setupact.log
Open File Explorer and enter this path in the address bar:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
C:WindowsSystem32SysprepPanther
Open setupact.log in Notepad. Search for:
AppxSysprep
0x80073cf2
0x3cf2
was installed for a user
not provisioned for all users
The important line is usually immediately before the final AppxSysprep.dll failure. It should identify a PackageFullName, such as a package name followed by a version, architecture, and publisher identifier.
A typical sequence looks like this:
SYSPRP Package <PackageFullName> was installed for a user, but not provisioned for all users.
SYSPRP Failed to remove apps for the current user: 0x80073cf2.
SYSPRP ActionPlatform::LaunchModule: Failure occurred while executing 'SysprepGeneralize' from C:WindowsSystem32AppxSysprep.dll
The DLL line is often the component reporting the failure. The package-state line is usually the underlying cause.
Also check setuperr.log in the same folder if the failure followed an upgrade or servicing operation.
2. Find the affected user and package
Open PowerShell as administrator:
- Press Start.
- Type PowerShell.
- Right-click Windows PowerShell.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
Import-Module Appx
Import-Module Dism
Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers |
Where-Object PublisherId -eq 8wekyb3d8bbwe |
Format-List PackageFullName,PackageUserInformation
Look for the package named in setupact.log. Its PackageUserInformation entry can show that it is installed for a user even though it is no longer provisioned for all users.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Stale local profiles, domain accounts, or old reference-image profiles can retain these registrations. Do not assume that removing a package from the currently signed-in account fixes every profile.
3. Remove the installed package
Use the exact PackageFullName from the log and command output:
Remove-AppxPackage -Package <PackageFullName>
Replace <PackageFullName> with the actual value. Do not remove every built-in AppX package as a precaution.
4. Remove its provisioning entry
Find the package’s provisioning name, then run:
Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName <PackageName>
PackageName is not always identical to PackageFullName, so copy the correct value from the machine rather than guessing.
Recommended Free Tools
Removing provisioning alone may leave the package installed for an existing user. Both states may need to be corrected before Sysprep can generalize the image.
Restart Windows and run Sysprep again. If it fails, return to setupact.log and inspect the first package-specific error, not only the final DLL line.
Prevent Store updates during image preparation
A Microsoft Store app can update during reference-image preparation. The updated package may be registered for one user while the older package remains the provisioned image version.
Before preparing another reference image:
- Disconnect the network while working in Audit mode, or
- Prevent automatic Store updates during the preparation process.
After the image is generalized, reconnect networking and apply updates through your normal deployment process. This avoids creating a mismatch between user-installed packages and system provisioning.
Repair Windows if the file is genuinely missing or damaged
Use this path when AppxSysprep.dll is absent from %WINDIR%System32, Windows reports corruption outside the normal AppX package error, or the problem followed an interrupted update.
1. Install Windows updates
Go to:
- Start
- Settings
- Windows Update
- Check for updates
- Select Download & install when updates are offered.
- Restart the computer.
Retry Sysprep after the restart. Pending servicing can lock the component store or leave AppX changes incomplete.
2. Run DISM
Open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Press Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. DISM may use Windows Update as its repair source. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish and test Sysprep again.
If DISM cannot find repair files, use matching Windows installation media or another suitable repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the source path with the actual Windows installation source matching the installed edition and build.

Repeating SFC and DISM without checking what changed can make troubleshooting slow and unclear. Outbyte PC Repair can show system issues through its free scan, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and DISM followed by SFC remains the Microsoft repair path.
3. Check the file location and signature
In elevated PowerShell, run:
$path = "$env:windirSystem32AppxSysprep.dll"
Test-Path $path
Get-AuthenticodeSignature $path
Test-Path should return True if the file exists. The signature result should identify a valid Microsoft signature. A missing file, invalid signature, or unexpected location requires repair through Windows servicing rather than a random replacement.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not assume that a missing file proves malware. Failed servicing, antivirus quarantine, component-store corruption, or tampering can all produce similar symptoms.
Check antivirus quarantine
If the error appeared after a security scan:
- Open Start.

- Open Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries involving
AppxSysprep.dll.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider upgrade and servicing failures
A Sysprep error can follow:
- A Windows upgrade
- A Store app update
- An AppX removal that was incomplete
- An interrupted update
- A locked AppX repository
- Pending Windows servicing
- A failed AppX migration
Windows 10 version 1709 had a documented MiracastView migration issue that could produce AppxSysprep errors. The appropriate workaround depends on the package and Windows state shown in the logs. Do not replace the DLL to work around a migration problem.
Complete Windows Update, restart, and inspect both setupact.log and setuperr.log. If a package repository is busy, allow servicing to finish before retrying package removal or Sysprep.
Why regsvr32 will not fix this file
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a self-registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. AppxSysprep.dll is a Sysprep provider, not a normal COM control that you repair by registering it.
Running this command is therefore not an appropriate fix:
regsvr32 AppxSysprep.dll
It may produce another error without changing the AppX package state or repairing Windows component files.
Do not copy the DLL from another PC
Avoid downloading appxsysprep.dll from random DLL sites or copying it into a game or application folder. That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong Windows-build version, use the wrong architecture, or leave the actual AppX registration or servicing problem untouched.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, official Windows installation media, or an in-place repair installation instead. Microsoft does not provide a general standalone download intended to replace this provider.
Drivers and unrelated runtimes
Device Manager is relevant only if the same incident includes a separate driver error:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the affected device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
A driver update will not normally repair an AppX Sysprep provider. Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, and graphics-driver reinstallations are also not valid general solutions unless a separate error specifically identifies one of those components.
Manually checking many device vendors can mean hunting versions and guessing which driver is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and unrelated to the AppX package repair when Sysprep names a package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse recovery options if repair still fails
If the failure began after a recent update or software change, try System Restore:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
You can also start Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore.
If Windows remains damaged, use official Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation. As a final imaging option, create a fresh reference image after correcting the AppX package and preventing Store updates during preparation.
FAQ
Is appxsysprep.dll a normal application DLL?
No. It is a Microsoft Windows AppX Sysprep provider located under the Windows system directory. It supports Sysprep’s handling of Store and AppX packages.
What does 0x80073cf2 mean here?
In this context, it commonly indicates that Sysprep could not remove or validate an AppX package because its per-user installation and system-wide provisioning state do not match.
Should I remove every Microsoft Store package?
No. Identify the exact package immediately before the failure in setupact.log, then remove that package and its provisioning entry as appropriate.
Is the file supposed to be in SysWOW64?
Do not use folder copying to decide that. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native system files, and 32-bit processes can be redirected automatically. Repair the installed Windows component instead.
What if the file exists but Sysprep still fails?
The file may only be reporting the underlying failure. Recheck setupact.log for the first package-specific error, stale user profile, pending update, locked repository, or migration problem.
Can I fix it by reinstalling the program that displays the error?
Only if that program is incorrectly trying to load a Windows component. When Sysprep names AppxSysprep.dll, the definitive fix is usually AppX package-state repair or Windows servicing, not reinstalling an unrelated application.
