Windows or the affected application may display messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll was not found.”
  • “There was a problem starting icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll.”
  • “The file ‘icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll’ could not be loaded or is corrupt.”
  • “icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The exact wording depends on the application, Windows version, and .NET loading process.

The 60-second answer

icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll is the case-insensitive Windows spelling of ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll, a managed .NET assembly used for ZIP, GZip, BZip2, TAR, and related archive operations. It is normally installed privately by a game, utility, installer, developer tool, or business application.

It is not a Windows system DLL. Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website, copy it into System32, or register it with regsvr32. Close the affected program, use its repair or file-verification option, and reinstall it from the original vendor or legitimate launcher if repair is unavailable.

Why this error occurs

The most common causes are:

  1. The application’s copy was deleted, quarantined, or never installed.
  2. A launcher update was interrupted.
  3. The application contains the wrong SharpZipLib version.
  4. The required .NET Framework runtime is disabled or damaged.
  5. The installation or disk has become corrupted.
  6. Antivirus or Windows security controls removed the file.
  7. A dependency is missing even though the message names SharpZipLib.

The filename alone cannot identify the program that owns it. Several unrelated applications can bundle different SharpZipLib versions, and multiple versions can legitimately exist in separate application folders.

What the file does

SharpZipLib is an open-source compression library written in C# for .NET. Applications use it to create, read, extract, or update archive files. Some versions also support encryption-related archive features.

The old package commonly associated with this filename is version 0.85.4.369, targeting .NET Framework 2.0. Newer applications may use the separately packaged SharpZipLib library instead. The version required by your program depends on that program’s installer and assembly references.

This is an application assembly, not a component supplied by Windows, DirectX, or the Visual C++ Redistributable.

Fix 1: Repair or verify the affected application

This is the safest and most likely solution.

Identify the owning program

  1. Read the full error window and note the program name.
  2. If no program is named, open the application or game that you launched immediately before the error appeared.
  3. Look at the error path if one is shown. A path under a game, launcher, utility, or business application folder identifies the owner.
  4. Do not assume that a copy found elsewhere on the computer is suitable.

Use the program’s repair option

Open the application’s settings, launcher, or installed-app management page and look for Repair, Verify, Scan and repair, or Check files.

For a Microsoft Store application:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Find the affected application.
  5. Select the three-dot menu.
  6. Choose Advanced options.
  7. Select Repair.
  8. Start the application again.

If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset only if you are prepared for the application to remove local settings or cached data.

For a game launcher, use its equivalent file-verification command. In Steam, the usual route is Library, right-click the game, select Properties, open Installed Files, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Labels can change, so look for the launcher’s current Verify or Repair option.

A successful verification normally downloads or restores the missing assembly. Start the program again after the process completes.

Reinstall from the original source

If no repair feature exists:

  1. Close the application and its launcher.
  2. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Select the affected program and choose Uninstall.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Download or reinstall the program from its original vendor, Microsoft Store, Steam, or another legitimate distribution source.
  6. Run the installer normally and allow it to complete.
  7. Start the application before adding modifications or third-party files.

If the error returns immediately after reinstalling, check antivirus history before repeating the installation.

Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine

A missing file that appeared after a security scan may have been quarantined.

  1. Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Expand the detection that mentions the affected application or DLL.
  5. Review the file path and detection details.
  6. If the file clearly belongs to a trusted, correctly installed application, check the vendor’s guidance before restoring it.
  7. If there is any doubt, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source.

Do not disable antivirus protection merely to obtain a DLL from an unknown download page. A quarantined file may be a false positive, but that cannot be established from the filename alone. Its origin, hash, signature, and security-vendor analysis matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After restoring a confirmed-safe file, launch the program. If the security product removes it again, do not keep restoring it. Update the application, contact its vendor, and investigate the security detection.

Fix 3: Enable .NET Framework 3.5 for older applications

The legacy SharpZipLib package targets .NET Framework 2.0. On supported Windows versions, .NET Framework 3.5 includes .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0 compatibility features.

Use this step when the application specifically reports a .NET runtime problem or is clearly an older program.

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Search for Windows Features.
  3. Open Turn Windows features on or off.
  4. Select .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
  5. Select OK.
  6. Allow Windows to download or install the required components.
  7. Restart Windows if prompted.
  8. Test the application again.

Microsoft documents this process on its .NET Framework 3.5 installation page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installing .NET Framework does not recreate a missing ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll. It only supplies the runtime compatibility that an older application may need. If the DLL itself is absent, repair or reinstall the owning application.

Fix 4: Do not substitute a random DLL

The old 0.85.4.369 package is not automatically correct for every program. A newer or older application may require a different assembly identity, API, or target framework.

Replacing an old 0.x assembly with a 1.x build can produce a new loading or binding error. Copying a DLL from another application can also create conflicts because the application may expect a particular version in a particular folder.

Do not choose a file based only on whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. SharpZipLib is managed .NET code, so the important compatibility factors are the application’s runtime, assembly version, and deployment layout. A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit game containing a managed SharpZipLib assembly.

The commonly listed legacy file is described by third-party metadata as 32-bit and approximately 0.19 MB. That description is not a universal architecture or size specification for every SharpZipLib release.

Fix 5: Check the installation folder and permissions

If the application is installed in a protected location, permissions or security controls may prevent it from reading its own files.

  1. Open the application’s installation folder.
  2. Confirm that the folder belongs to the program named in the error.
  3. Do not copy a DLL from another program into it.
  4. Right-click the program’s executable.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Compatibility tab.
  7. Select Run this program as an administrator only for testing.
  8. Select Apply, then OK.
  9. Start the application.

If running as administrator makes no difference, turn the setting off unless the vendor specifically requires it. Reinstalling the application is still the correct way to restore a missing assembly.

Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption

System File Checker and DISM repair protected Windows components. They are not normal sources for a third-party SharpZipLib file, so use them when Windows has other corruption symptoms, such as broken system features, repeated servicing failures, or several unrelated system errors.

  4. Run:

  1. Wait for DISM to finish.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Repair or verify the affected application again.

Microsoft’s procedures are documented for DISM image repair and System File Checker.

The result may state that Windows found and repaired corrupted files. That does not prove that icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll was restored. Test the owning application after the restart.

Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for reported system issues, while repairs are performed by the full version; for this application-owned DLL, repairing or reinstalling the original program remains the definitive fix.

Fix 7: Check drivers only when other symptoms point to them

A missing SharpZipLib assembly is not normally a driver problem. Do not update drivers as the first response unless the application also crashes with graphics, audio, storage, or device errors.

To check a relevant device:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category related to the separate problem.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab.
  7. Review the provider and driver status.
  8. Use Update Driver only when an appropriate update is available from the device or computer manufacturer.

Updating drivers will not supply SharpZipLib. If several devices have stale or conflicting drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for reported driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; reinstalling the affected application remains the correct fix for this DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually does not work

Do not run this as a routine solution:

regsvr32 ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll

regsvr32 is intended for native DLLs that expose the required DllRegisterServer registration entry point. SharpZipLib is a managed .NET assembly, not a normal COM registration DLL. The command commonly produces an entry-point or registration error and does not repair .NET assembly binding.

Microsoft explains the command’s intended behavior in its regsvr32 documentation.

If the error says “specified module could not be found”

That wording does not always mean SharpZipLib itself is absent. The application may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, the file may be corrupt, or the loader may be unable to use the assembly because of a version or runtime mismatch.

Repair the application first. If the error survives a clean reinstall, check:

  • Antivirus protection history
  • Installer logs
  • Controlled folder access events
  • Disk health
  • Whether the installer download completed correctly
  • The application’s documented .NET requirements

Run an updated security scan if the file disappeared unexpectedly. System Restore can help only when a known-good restore point exists and should not replace a clean application reinstall.

Frequently asked questions

Is icsharpcode.sharpziplib.dll part of Windows?

No. It is normally a private third-party .NET assembly installed by the application that uses it. It should generally be beside that application’s executable or in its managed assembly folder, not in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which program installed it?

The filename alone cannot identify the owner. Games, installers, utilities, developer tools, and enterprise applications can bundle SharpZipLib. Use the error path, launcher, or application executable to identify the program.

Should I download the DLL?

No. Random DLL download pages can provide malware, a wrong version, or an incompatible file, and they often leave the damaged installation unresolved. Use the owning application’s repair or verification feature, then reinstall from the original vendor or legitimate launcher.

Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?

The legacy 0.85.4.369 listing is commonly described as 32-bit, but that does not define every SharpZipLib release. Because it is managed .NET code, match the application’s required assembly and runtime rather than selecting a file based only on Windows architecture.

Does installing DirectX or Visual C++ fix it?

No. Those packages do not provide SharpZipLib. Install them only when the application separately reports a missing DirectX or Visual C++ component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I copy the file into System32?

No. Copying an application-owned assembly into a Windows system folder is not a reliable repair and can create conflicts. Restore it inside the application’s own installation directory by repairing or reinstalling that program.

Why does the error return after reinstalling?

Antivirus quarantine, controlled-folder access, a damaged installer, disk errors, or an application update can remove the file again. Review security history and installer logs, then reinstall from a verified legitimate source.
