apreg.dll is a legacy Ahead/Nero application file, not a Windows component, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the exact Nero program that requests it. An apreg.dll error can also come from antivirus quarantine, an interrupted installation, or a leftover startup reference after Nero was removed.
What this file actually does
apreg.dll is associated with the Ahead AutoStart Module, historically published by Ahead Software AG, the company behind older Nero products. Nero applications used shared Ahead components, commonly in a directory like:

On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit Nero installation may instead use:

C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAheadLibapreg.dll
The exact path depends on the Nero release and how it was installed. Public records identify the file as a 32-bit Win32 DLL, but different historical records report different versions and sizes. Do not treat one online file listing as a universal version, checksum, or replacement for every Nero installation.

apreg.dll is not:
- A Windows system file
- A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A hardware driver
- A file that should normally be copied into
C:WindowsSystem32 - A DLL that should automatically be registered with
regsvr32
Older Nero applications may request the file while launching, during disc insertion, through AutoPlay, or during Windows startup. Current Nero releases do not necessarily use this legacy module.
Causes and symptoms
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when opening Nero | Damaged or incomplete Nero installation | Repair or reinstall that Nero product |
| The message started after antivirus activity | The file was quarantined or removed | Inspect Protection History and verify its origin |
| Several Nero versions have been installed | Conflicting shared files or registry entries | Use Nero FirstAidKit, then reinstall the required version |
| The warning appears at every startup, but Nero is gone | Stale startup, AutoPlay, or registry reference | Identify and remove the obsolete entry |
| The problem began during a failed setup | Interrupted installation | Uninstall, restart, and reinstall from legitimate media |
| The file is in System32 or a random folder | Incorrect replacement or suspicious software | Do not trust it; scan and reinstall Nero |
| Other Windows components are also failing | Possible broader Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| A 32-bit Nero program fails on 64-bit Windows | Architecture or compatibility issue | Use the correct Nero installer and compatibility settings |
Before changing anything, note the exact wording and the program name shown in the error. Common messages include:
This application failed to start because apreg.dll was not found.
The file apreg.dll is missing or corrupted.
apreg.dll was not found.
Cannot find apreg.dll.
Cannot register apreg.dll.
These messages are generic loader-style errors. They do not by themselves identify which Nero product is responsible.

Do not begin by downloading the DLL. First determine whether a current program still needs it.
Check the error window
Look at the title bar and the text around the error. It may name Nero, Ahead, an executable, or a shortcut. Write down the executable name if one appears.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Nero and Ahead.
- Expand any matching entry and note its product name and version information if shown.
You can also check the older Control Panel list:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for Nero or Ahead entries.
If Nero is installed and the error occurs while starting it, that installation is the primary suspect. If no Nero product remains installed, the message may be caused by an obsolete startup or AutoPlay reference rather than a missing file that current software needs.
Check the shortcut target
If the error appears after clicking an icon:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, inspect Target.
- Note the executable path and product name.
- Select Cancel when finished.
A target pointing to an old Nero executable indicates which installation should be repaired or removed.
Check the expected Ahead directory
In File Explorer, inspect these locations:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAheadLib
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAheadLib
Do not create the folders or copy a downloaded file into them. The purpose of this check is only to determine whether a legitimate Nero installation has related files in the expected location.
Fix 2: Repair the installed Nero program
Repair is the least disruptive solution when Nero is still installed and you still need it.
Try Windows application repair
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Nero entry.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
Not every older desktop program exposes the Windows Repair button. If the repair completes, restart Windows and launch Nero again.
A successful repair should restore the program’s own missing files and related components. It should not require you to place apreg.dll in a Windows system directory.

Try Repair or Change in Control Panel
If the Settings option is unavailable:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Nero entry.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows when it finishes.
If the wizard reports that the original installation source is unavailable, locate the original Nero installer, OEM recovery media, or the legitimate installer associated with the product account. Do not substitute a DLL from a different Nero release.
Fix 3: Uninstall and reinstall the exact Nero product
Use this method when repair fails, the installation is incomplete, or several Nero components are damaged.
Preserve what you need first
Before uninstalling, save any personal projects, disc-label data, profiles, presets, or activation information that you still need. Removing Nero can remove program settings even when personal documents remain elsewhere.
If you do not know which Nero product was installed, record its name from Installed apps or Programs and Features before removing it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUninstall Nero
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Nero entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the removal wizard.
Alternatively:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select Nero.
- Select Uninstall or Change.
- Follow the prompts.
Restart Windows after the uninstall, even if the wizard does not request it.
Reinstall from a legitimate source
Use the original OEM installer, installation media, or a legitimate Nero account and download channel. If the product is old, the currently available Nero installer may not be compatible with it, and a current product may not contain apreg.dll.
Choose the installer that matches the product you actually need. On 64-bit Windows, an older Nero application may still be a 32-bit program. That is normal, but its dependencies must come from the matching installation package.
After reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Nero from its installed shortcut.
- Try the action that previously produced the message.
- Check whether the Ahead library directory was recreated by the installer.
- Confirm that the error does not return during startup or disc insertion.
If the error remains, the wrong Nero generation may have been installed, or an old startup reference may still be present.
Fix 4: Clean up multiple Nero installations
Several Nero generations can leave shared Ahead files and registry references behind. This is especially relevant if you have installed, upgraded, partially removed, or restored more than one old Nero product.
Nero provides Nero FirstAidKit for removing traces of previous Nero programs after failed installations or failed uninstalls. Use it only after preserving personal Nero data and activation details. A clean-removal utility can remove Nero-related files and registry entries, so it may also remove information needed by an existing installation.
The general process is:
- Back up personal Nero projects and settings.
- Record your product name and activation information.
- Uninstall Nero through Windows.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Nero FirstAidKit according to its instructions.
- Restart Windows again.
- Install only the Nero version you intend to use.
Do not use FirstAidKit casually if you have several Nero products that must remain installed. A clean removal is most appropriate when the installation is already unusable or conflicting.

Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may remove or quarantine an old application file. That does not prove the file was safe or malicious. Verify its source and location before restoring anything.
Inspect Protection History
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Inspect any detection involving
apreg.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, source, and available signature information.
Restore or allow the file only when you can establish that it came from your legitimate Nero installer and was located in the expected Ahead directory. If the file came from a random download, modified installer, crack, or unknown folder, do not restore it.
Run a full Microsoft Defender scan before reinstalling Nero:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If the detection returns after reinstalling, stop using that installer until its provenance has been verified.
Fix 6: Remove a stale startup or AutoPlay reference
If Nero was intentionally removed but Windows still displays an apreg.dll warning, the missing file may no longer be needed. Windows or an old Nero component may still be trying to launch a removed executable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
First check startup entries:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Nero, Ahead, or an entry whose location points to a removed folder.
- Right-click the clearly obsolete entry.
- Choose Disable.
Disabling a startup entry prevents it from launching automatically, but it does not remove the underlying configuration. If the entry is clearly tied to a program you no longer use, uninstall that program properly or use a trusted Windows administration method to remove its orphaned entry.
Also check Settings > Apps > Startup for the same type of entry.
If the warning appears only when inserting a disc, AutoPlay may be invoking a removed Nero handler. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay and review the action assigned to removable drives. Select a neutral Windows action, such as asking what to do, if the old Nero handler is no longer installed.
Do not manually recreate Nero registry values. If you still need Nero, reinstall it. If you do not need it, remove the obsolete reference instead of restoring a DLL that no current program uses.

Fix 7: Do not copy apreg.dll into System32
Copying a DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 is generally the wrong solution here. It can cause several problems:
- The file may be the wrong version.
- A 32-bit file may be placed where a 64-bit component is expected.
- Windows may continue loading the wrong copy.
- The real Nero installation may remain damaged.
- A malicious DLL may gain a trusted search location.
- The error may come from a stale reference rather than a missing dependency.
The same warning applies to C:WindowsSysWOW64. That folder is used for 32-bit Windows components on 64-bit Windows; it is not a general-purpose storage location for old application DLLs.

Never download apreg.dll from a random DLL website. The file may contain malware, belong to another Nero release, have the wrong architecture, or fail to fix the underlying installation. Use the original Nero media, a legitimate Nero account or installer, or a verified OEM recovery source instead.
Fix 8: Do not run regsvr32 blindly
A .dll extension does not mean that a file should be registered. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide the appropriate registration entry point, commonly DllRegisterServer.
Do not run:
regsvr32 apreg.dll
unless documentation for the exact Nero release explicitly requires it. For this file, restoring the owning Nero installation is the appropriate path. Registration will not repair a missing file, replace a wrong build, or correct a stale startup reference.
If you already ran regsvr32 and received an error, undoing that command is not usually necessary. Continue with Nero repair or removal instead.
Fix 9: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
apreg.dll is not normally a protected Windows component, so Windows system repair tools will not usually recreate it. Use these commands when other Windows files or features are also malfunctioning, not as the primary way to restore Nero.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, and SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both commands complete successfully but Nero still reports apreg.dll, return to the Nero repair or reinstall steps.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Check compatibility and architecture
Public records identify apreg.dll as a 32-bit Win32 module. A 32-bit Nero application can therefore require 32-bit files even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Do not replace it with a 64-bit DLL. Instead:
- Right-click the Nero shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Try Run this program as an administrator only if Nero requires elevated access.
- If the program is very old, select Run this program in compatibility mode for and test an appropriate older Windows mode.
- Select Apply, then OK.
Compatibility mode cannot create a missing DLL. It is useful only after the correct Nero installation is present.
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables are also not a verified direct fix for apreg.dll. They provide Microsoft runtime libraries, not arbitrary Ahead/Nero-owned modules.

apreg.dll is not a hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally restore it.
If Nero also fails to detect a drive, burns discs incorrectly, or Windows shows device errors, inspect drivers separately:

- Right-click the affected drive.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
You can also expand Storage controllers and check for warning icons. Do not remove a device driver simply because apreg.dll is missing.
Manually hunting through many hardware-driver versions can be time-consuming when the separate issue is driver-related rather than Nero-related. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling Nero for an apreg.dll error.
Fix 12: Use System Restore only when the timing is clear
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after a failed Nero installation, system change, or update. It can affect applications, drivers, updates, and settings, so review the consequences before proceeding.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the listed changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore is not a substitute for a clean Nero installer. If the restore does not solve the issue, reinstall the affected Nero product instead.
When to stop restoring this old component
If you no longer use the Nero program that requested apreg.dll, removing the obsolete startup or AutoPlay reference is safer than rebuilding the old installation. If the application is incompatible with current Windows versions, consider moving your files to a supported disc-burning or media-management application.
If a clean reinstall still produces the message, identify the exact executable with Task Manager, the shortcut target, Startup apps, or Event Viewer. The message may belong to an abandoned Nero component rather than the Nero application you currently use.
FAQ
Is apreg.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with the Ahead AutoStart Module and older Ahead/Nero software.
Is apreg.dll a driver?
No. It is an application DLL. Historical listings may group installed Nero components under broad diagnostic categories, but that does not make this file a Windows hardware driver.
Should I download apreg.dll separately?
No. A separate download may be malicious, incompatible, or the wrong architecture. Repair or reinstall the Nero product that owns the file.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Keep application files with the application that installed them. Copying the file to a Windows directory can create search-path and version problems.
Will SFC restore apreg.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while apreg.dll belongs to legacy third-party software.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling Nero?
A startup, AutoPlay, shortcut, or registry reference may still point to the removed program. Remove the obsolete reference or reinstall Nero if you still need it.
Is the file 32-bit or 64-bit?
Public records identify it as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. The correct solution still depends on the exact Nero application and installer.
Why did regsvr32 fail?
The file may not be designed for COM-style registration. A DLL is not automatically suitable for regsvr32; reinstall the owning application instead.
