drvinterface.dll: Repair VIA RAID Errors Without Random DLLs

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

drvinterface.dll is a VIA RAID utility file, not a Windows component. If drvinterface.dll is missing, the safest fix is to repair the original VIA V-RAID package rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The file is associated with VIA’s drvInterface program and has historically been described as “Interface dll for 98/Me.” It belongs with the VIA RAID management software, commonly installed under a path such as:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

C:Program FilesVIARAID

The folder may also contain raid_tool.exe, vialogsv.exe, RaidUtl.dll and other RAID utility files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not normally copy drvinterface.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The correct file depends on the VIA controller, the original package and the Windows generation for which that package was built.

GLOTRENDS SA3026C 6 Port PCIe SATA Expansion Card, SATA III 6Gbps, ASM1166
  • 6-PORT SATA EXPANSION CARD: Adds 6 SATA III (6Gbps) drives to your desktop at once, turning one PCIe x4 slot into a 6-bay storage pool for unRAID, TrueNAS, ZFS, Proxmox or Windows Storage Spaces software RAID. Hardware RAID is not supported.
  • 277MB/S ON EVERY PORT: PCIe 3.0 X2 upstream runs at 16GT/s, and each of the 6 SATA ports delivers up to 277MB/s, so large multi-drive transfers, media libraries and backup jobs finish fast with no bottleneck.
  • NO DRIVER, WIDE COMPATIBILITY: Plug and play on Windows (except XP), Mac OS, Linux and NAS systems. Set SATA mode to AHCI in BIOS or UEFI before first install. This is a data storage HBA and does not boot an operating system.
  • 6 BUILT-IN LED INDICATORS: A steady red LED means the drive is powered, a flashing LED means it is reading or writing, so you can check every SATA drive at a glance without opening the case.
  • FITS X4/X8/X16 SLOTS, FULL KIT INCLUDED: Ships with 6 x SATA III cables (350mm/13.5in), a 1:5 SATA power splitter cable, and both a 12cm regular and an 8cm low-profile bracket for any PC or NAS case.

What the drvinterface.dll error means

You may see one of these messages:

  • “The program can’t start because drvinterface.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “This application has failed to start because drvinterface.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading drvinterface.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Failed to load drvinterface.dll.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because drvinterface.dll was not found.”
  • “The file drvinterface.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

These messages usually appear when an old VIA RAID management utility starts. They do not necessarily mean that Windows itself is missing a system file.

The wording “specified module could not be found” needs special attention. Windows may be unable to find drvinterface.dll, or it may have found that file but be unable to load one of its dependent files. Restoring only the named DLL may therefore fail.

Fix 1: Identify the VIA program that is calling the file

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes

Before changing anything, identify the program that produces the error. This prevents you from repairing the wrong application or removing a storage component that the computer still needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the error dialog

Look at the title bar and the text in the error window. The calling program may be named there. Write down the executable name if one appears, especially if it is raid_tool.exe or another VIA-related program.

Search for the VIA RAID installation

  1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC.
  3. In the search box, type:

text
raid_tool.exe

  1. Allow the search to finish.
  2. If it finds the file, right-click it and select Open file location.

You can also search for:

drvinterface.dll

If the file exists, note its complete path. A file inside the VIA RAID application directory is more relevant than an identically named file found in an unrelated folder.

Check startup entries

A damaged or obsolete VIA utility may be configured to start with Windows.

  1. Right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Look for an entry mentioning VIA, RAID or V-RAID.
  4. Right-click the entry and choose Open file location, if that option is available.
  5. Record the folder before disabling anything.

You can disable a management utility startup entry if you have confirmed that it is not needed. Do not disable or delete a storage driver merely because the RAID management window is old.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check Reliability Monitor or Event Viewer

Reliability Monitor often identifies the executable that failed.

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type reliability.
  3. Open View reliability history.
  4. Select the day on which the error occurred.
  5. Expand Application failures and inspect the affected program.

You can also inspect Event Viewer:

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Event Viewer.
  3. Open Windows Logs and select Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time of the failure.
  5. Check the Faulting application name and Faulting module name fields.

Inspect the file’s properties

If you find an existing copy of the file:

  1. Right-click drvinterface.dll.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab.
  4. Check the description and company information.
  5. Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is present.

The historical description may identify it as “Interface dll for 98/Me,” and the company information may identify VIA. Do not treat a matching filename alone as proof that a file is safe.

Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the complete VIA RAID package

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes, plus a restart

This is the most likely successful repair when the error appears while launching raid_tool.exe or another VIA RAID utility.

RAIDTOOLUTILITYWIN98-ME
RAIDTOOLUTILITYWin2000-xp
RAIDTOOLUTILITYWINNT40

That means a Windows 98/Me copy is not automatically interchangeable with a Windows 2000/XP copy. A 32-bit utility may also need a 32-bit DLL even when it is running on 64-bit Windows.

Obtain the correct package

Use the VIA driver portal or the support page for the motherboard or RAID card. Search using the exact motherboard model, controller model and Windows version.

Do not choose a package merely because its archive contains a file named drvinterface.dll. Match the package to the hardware and operating-system generation.

Reinstall the utility

  1. Download the package from the hardware manufacturer or VIA source.
  2. If it is a compressed archive, right-click it and select Extract All.
  3. Open the extracted folder.
  4. Look for Setup.exe, Install.exe or the documented RAID utility installer.
  5. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
  6. Follow the installation prompts.
  7. Restart Windows when prompted.
  8. Launch the VIA RAID utility again.

Prefer reinstalling the complete RAID-tool directory instead of copying a single DLL. The utility may need companion files, language files or dependent libraries that were also removed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If no installer is included

Some older packages contain folders rather than a modern setup program.

  1. Extract the complete package to a temporary folder.
  2. Locate the utility directory that matches the target Windows generation.
  3. Do not mix files from different utility directories.
  4. If the original installation directory still exists, back it up.
  5. Restore the complete utility directory from the exact package.
  6. Start the utility from its original installation path.
  7. Restart Windows and test again.

Manual copying is appropriate only when the source is the exact original installer or package. Do not copy the file to a Windows system folder.

How to tell whether this worked

The repair succeeded if the VIA RAID utility opens without the missing-file message and displays its normal interface. If the same error remains, check whether Windows is starting a second copy of the program from another folder.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and restore the package safely

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

An antivirus product, cleanup utility or incomplete uninstall may have removed the file.

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.

4 Ports PCI SATA Raid Controller Internal Expansion Card Adapter
  • Plug the SATA RAID PCI card into the PCI slot on your motherboard, and connect SATA devices to the ports on the PCI card using the cables provided, or standard SATA cables of adequate length
  • Add four independent SATA-I ports to your PCI equipped computer and enjoy the beneApplicable for of the optional software RAID configuration for added speed and/or data security with this adapter card.
  • The card comes with an optional RAID utility which lets you configure a RAID 0 RAID 1 or RAID 0+1 setup on two or more of the SATA ports
  • SIL3114 chipset and supports two modes: 32-bit at66MHZ and 64-bit at 133MHZ
  • Package includes: 1 x 4-Port SATA PCI Expansion Card , 2 x SATA Cable , 1 x Software CD (It is PCI card,NOT PCIE card)
  • The file came from the verified VIA RAID package.
  • The path belongs to the VIA RAID installation.
  • The package matches the controller and Windows version.
  • The antivirus record does not identify the file as malware.

Do not disable antivirus protection just to restore an unknown DLL. If the file was removed, reinstall the complete VIA package after reviewing the detection. A clean package installation is safer than forcing one isolated file back into place.

After restoring or reinstalling, test the application. If antivirus immediately quarantines the file again, stop and investigate the detection instead of repeatedly restoring it.

Fix 4: Verify that the correct Windows-era build is installed

Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes

Historical VIA RAID packages contained separate builds for Windows 98/Me, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000/XP. The file described as “Interface dll for 98/Me” identifies one variant, not every build of the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A mismatch can produce errors such as:

  • The file is missing even though it exists.
  • The file is not designed to run on Windows.
  • The application closes immediately.
  • Windows reports that a dependent module cannot be found.

Check the following:

  1. Open the VIA package’s readme file.
  2. Confirm the target operating system.
  3. Confirm the controller or motherboard model.
  4. Use the utility directory intended for that Windows generation.
  5. Keep the DLL beside the VIA executable that uses it.
  6. Do not replace a file in the application directory with one from a different package.

On 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, an old 32-bit VIA utility may still require 32-bit application files. That does not mean the file belongs in SysWOW64. The correct location remains the application’s own directory unless the original installer specifies otherwise.

Current Windows 10 and Windows 11 compatibility is uncertain for software designed for much older VIA hardware. If the RAID utility is no longer needed, removing it may be safer than forcing the old program to run.

Fix 5: Update or reinstall the related driver package carefully

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

drvinterface.dll belongs to the user-mode RAID management utility. It is separate from the actual storage driver.

For example, files such as:

viamraid.sys
viamrx64.sys

are storage drivers, not replacements for drvinterface.dll.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not remove storage drivers or change BIOS RAID settings while troubleshooting the utility. If Windows boots from a VIA RAID volume, the storage driver may be essential even if the management interface is obsolete.

Check the device in Device Manager

  1. Press Windows key + X.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Storage controllers.
  4. Also inspect IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and Other devices.
  5. Look for VIA RAID, V-RAID or an unknown controller.
  6. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  7. Open the Driver tab.
  8. Record the provider, date and version shown there.

Do not use Uninstall device unless you have the correct replacement package and understand whether the controller contains the boot volume. If you only need to repair the management application, reinstall the VIA RAID utility instead.

When driver files are old, manually identifying the correct package can involve checking several motherboard and controller pages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, but its full-version driver installation is optional and reinstalling the original VIA package remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.

After installing a verified driver package, restart Windows and test both the storage controller and the RAID utility. Confirm that the disks and volumes remain visible before considering the repair complete.

Fix 6: Run DISM and System File Checker for broader Windows damage

Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes

DISM and SFC are useful when several Windows components are failing, the disk may be corrupt or the DLL error appeared alongside wider system problems. They are unlikely to recreate a missing third-party VIA application DLL.

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  3. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for the command to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.

If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the application again. If it reports that no integrity violations were found, the missing VIA DLL still needs to be repaired from the VIA package.

Repeating SFC will not substitute for reinstalling a third-party application. Outbyte PC Repair can show a scan of broader Windows issues, but its full-version repair is optional and the original VIA installer remains the correct source for drvinterface.dll.

Fix 7: Use System Restore only after a known change

Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes

System Restore is reasonable if the error began immediately after a driver removal, software cleanup or update and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type restore point.
  3. Select Create a restore point.
  4. Open the System Protection tab.
  5. Select System Restore.
  6. Choose a restore point created before the failure.
  7. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  8. Review the changes.
  9. Continue only if the restore point is appropriate.
  10. Restart Windows when the process finishes.

System Restore is not the primary fix for an obsolete VIA utility. It may also change other installed programs or drivers, so use it only when the timing clearly points to a recent system change.

Fix 8: Remove the obsolete utility instead of restoring it

Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes

If the computer no longer uses VIA RAID hardware, the error may be caused by an orphaned startup entry. In that case, restoring the utility only preserves software that is no longer needed.

Uninstall the program

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Installed apps.
  4. Search for VIA, V-RAID or RAID Utility.
  5. Select the three-dot menu beside the program.
  6. Choose Uninstall.
  7. Restart Windows.

On older Windows installations:

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs and Features.
  3. Select the VIA RAID utility.
  4. Choose Uninstall.

Disable only the obsolete startup entry

If there is no uninstall entry:

  1. Open Task Manager.
  2. Select Startup apps.
  3. Select the VIA RAID management entry.
  4. Choose Disable.
  5. Restart Windows.

Do not remove a driver from Device Manager simply because the graphical utility is unnecessary. If the computer uses VIA RAID for its boot volume, leave the storage driver in place unless you have a verified migration or recovery plan.

Why Visual C++, DirectX and .NET are usually not the answer

There is no verified evidence that drvinterface.dll is a Microsoft runtime component or that it belongs to Visual C++, DirectX or .NET.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install or repair one of those runtimes only when a separate error explicitly names a runtime file or identifies that runtime as the cause. Installing unrelated redistributables will not normally restore a missing VIA application DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components.

There is no verified evidence that drvinterface.dll is a COM or ActiveX DLL requiring registration. A “module not found” error is therefore not normally repaired with:

regsvr32 drvinterface.dll

Running that command may produce another error and distract from the actual problem. Use registration only if the original VIA documentation specifically requires it or a separate error explicitly concerns DLL registration.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common causes and the matching repair

Likely cause What to do
Incomplete VIA RAID installation Reinstall the complete matching VIA package
Antivirus quarantine Verify the path and restore only from a trusted VIA package
Wrong Windows-era build Use the package directory for the correct Windows generation
Missing dependency Restore the complete utility directory, not one DLL
Orphaned startup entry Uninstall or disable the obsolete utility
General Windows corruption Run DISM, then SFC
Unneeded old RAID utility Remove the utility while preserving required storage drivers

Avoid random DLL download sites

Do not download drvinterface.dll from an unknown DLL repository. A standalone file may contain malware, belong to the wrong VIA package, use the wrong architecture or lack the dependent files required by raid_tool.exe. It may also hide the fact that the installation is damaged or that the utility should have been removed.

The safe sources are the original VIA RAID package, the motherboard manufacturer’s support package and the official VIA driver portal. Restore the complete matching installation whenever possible.

FAQ

Is drvinterface.dll a Windows file?

No. It is associated with VIA’s drvInterface and V-RAID management software. It is not normally a Windows system component.

Should I copy it to System32?

No. Keep it with the VIA RAID utility that calls it. Copying it to System32 or SysWOW64 can create version conflicts and usually does not repair the application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is drvinterface.dll the RAID driver?

No. It is a user-mode utility component. VIA storage drivers, including files with names such as viamraid.sys or viamrx64.sys, are separate components.

Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix the error?

Usually not. Nothing verified ties this file to Visual C++, DirectX or .NET. Repair the VIA RAID package first.

Why does Windows say the module is missing when the file exists?

The file may be the wrong build, or one of its dependent files may be absent or incompatible. Reinstall the complete matching package rather than replacing only the named DLL.

Can I delete the VIA RAID utility?

If the computer no longer uses the VIA RAID hardware, uninstalling the orphaned utility may be the best solution. If the boot volume uses VIA RAID, do not remove storage drivers or change RAID settings casually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the correct final decision?

If you still use the VIA RAID utility, restore the complete package that matches the controller and Windows generation. If the utility is needed but damaged, repair or reinstall it. If it is obsolete, remove it or disable its startup entry instead of downloading an isolated DLL.
