ar.dll Missing on Windows: Trace the App Before Repairing It

By VGSources Team 8 min read

“ The program can’t start because ar.dll is missing from your computer.” Other messages include “The code execution cannot proceed because ar.dll was not found,” “Error loading ar.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.”

The important point is that ar.dll is not one universal Windows file. It is a generic filename used by different applications, so the correct fix is to identify the program requesting it and repair that program’s own installation.

The 60-second fix

  1. Read the complete error and note the application name.
  2. Find the executable that is failing.
  3. Check where the program expects ar.dll.
  4. Repair or reinstall that exact application using its official installer or launcher.
  5. Do not download a replacement ar.dll and copy it into System32.

Some historical Chromium and Chrome builds used localesar.dll as an Arabic language resource. NVIDIA Omniverse applications have also logged an ar.dll inside versioned application bin directories. These are separate files that happen to share a filename and are not interchangeable.

Why ar.dll errors happen

The most common causes are:

  • An application update was interrupted.
  • The program was incompletely installed.
  • Antivirus software quarantined or deleted the file.
  • A DLL from another program or release was copied into the application folder.
  • The application and DLL have incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit architectures.
  • A dependency required by ar.dll is missing.
  • The application installation or user profile is corrupted.
  • Windows system files are damaged, although this is not the usual cause of an application-private DLL error.

Metadata showing a publisher such as “Other,” version 0.0.0.0, or an isolated file size does not identify the original software. The filename alone is not proof that two copies are compatible.

Step 1: Identify the application that owns ar.dll

Read the full error window

Look for the program name in the title bar or message. Also note whether the error appears when launching:

  • A browser
  • An Omniverse application
  • A game
  • A creative or engineering program
  • A utility that starts with Windows

If the error appears before any visible application opens, the file may be requested by a startup item, scheduled task, service, or background launcher.

Find the failing executable

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

  1. Select Processes or Details.
  2. Look for the program that was starting when the message appeared.
  3. Right-click it and choose Open file location.
  4. Record the executable name and its folder.

For startup errors:

  1. Select Startup apps in Task Manager.
  2. Disable only the item you recognize as related to the error.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. If the message disappears, re-enable the item after repairing its parent application.

You can also check Event Viewer:

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter eventvwr.msc.
  3. Open Windows Logs and select Application.
  4. Look for an error at the time the message appeared.
  5. Record the application name and faulting path.

The folder matters. A path containing localesar.dll points toward a browser or Chromium-based application. A path containing an NVIDIA Omniverse package’s bin directory points toward that particular Omniverse installation. A different path requires investigation rather than a guessed download.

Step 2: Repair the owning application

Microsoft Store applications

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Apps → Installed apps.
  3. Find the affected application.
  4. Select the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Advanced options.
  6. Select Repair.
  7. Test the application.

If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset. Reset can remove application data and settings, so back up important settings first.

Traditional desktop programs

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter appwiz.cpl.
  3. Find the affected program in Programs and Features.
  4. Right-click it.
  5. Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
  6. Complete the repair wizard and restart Windows.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart the computer, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer or launcher. Do not reinstall only a loose DLL. The installer needs to restore the correct file, its dependencies, registry entries where applicable, and the matching application build.

If the error continues after reinstalling, check whether old folders remain in the application’s installation directory or user profile. Back up settings first, remove leftover folders only when the publisher’s instructions support doing so, and then install again.

If the affected program is Chrome or Chromium-based

A missing localesar.dll belongs to the matching browser build, not to Windows. Update the browser through its built-in updater or reinstall it using the official browser distribution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not copy ar.dll from another Chrome or Chromium version. A browser update can change the expected files and folder structure, and a same-named file from another build may be incompatible.

If the affected program is NVIDIA Omniverse

Repair or reinstall the exact Omniverse application or package that reports the error. Use its official launcher or installer and restore the matching Kit components if the launcher provides a repair or verification option.

Do not copy ar.dll from another Omniverse release. NVIDIA application packages use versioned directories, so a file from a different release may not match the executable or its dependencies.

Step 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may remove an application DLL after an update or false detection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows Security

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security → Windows Security.
  3. Choose Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Open any detection associated with the affected application.
  6. Check the original file path, detection name, and publisher information.

Restore the file only when all of these are true:

  • The application came from its official publisher or launcher.
  • The original path belongs to that application.
  • The file’s digital signature matches the expected publisher where a signature is available.
  • You have checked that the detection is a false positive or the publisher has confirmed it.

After restoring it, update the application and run a security scan. Add an exclusion only when the publisher confirms the detection is false. Never restore an unknown DLL merely because its filename matches.

Step 4: Check architecture and dependencies

A 32-bit application needs compatible 32-bit components. A 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit components. Do not infer the architecture from the name ar.dll.

Use the application’s official installer to restore the correct architecture. If the program offers separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions, install the version that matches the executable and the rest of the application.

“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that ar.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. In that situation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that ar.dll is in the application folder or expected subfolder.
  2. Check the application’s repair or diagnostic tool.
  3. Review the publisher’s prerequisites.
  4. Install only runtimes explicitly required by that application.
  5. Restart the program.

There is no reliable evidence that ar.dll is a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or Windows component. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application’s documentation or error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency.

Step 5: Update Windows and relevant drivers

First install pending Windows updates:

  1. Open Start → Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart and test the application.

A graphics or hardware driver is relevant only when the failing application is tied to that device and the error began after a driver change.

To update through Device Manager:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Choose Device Manager.
  3. Expand the relevant category, often Display adapters.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  7. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and choose Roll Back Driver when available. For a clean replacement, obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer rather than copying DLLs between applications.

Step 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows damage

Do not begin with SFC because an application-private ar.dll is missing. Windows cannot reliably restore a third-party application file that is not part of Windows.

Use these commands when several Windows components are failing, Windows features are damaged, or there are other signs of component-store corruption.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt.
  4. Select Run as administrator.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Wait for it to complete, then run:

sfc /scannow

Restart Windows and test the application. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.

If both commands complete without finding relevant corruption and only one application still reports ar.dll, return to that application’s repair or reinstall process.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of checking Windows components less repetitive by showing what its free scan detects; repairs are performed by the full version. If ar.dll belongs to a specific game or application, repairing or reinstalling that program remains the definitive fix.

Why regsvr32 usually does not help

Do not run:

regsvr32 ar.dll

regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that provide registration entry points, including DllRegisterServer. A normal application library or language resource usually does not need registration. The command may produce a message that the entry point was not found, and it will not restore missing dependencies or repair a damaged installation.

Use regsvr32 only when the software publisher explicitly instructs you to register that specific DLL.

Avoid random DLL downloads

Downloading ar.dll from an arbitrary DLL site can introduce malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched build, or a file that lacks the dependencies your program needs. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or multiple application folders can also create DLL search-order problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe source is the official installer or launcher for the application that requested the file. For Windows components, use Windows Update, Microsoft’s repair tools, or the built-in recovery options.

When to use Windows Features or recovery

Windows Features are not a general source for ar.dll, but they can repair a missing Windows feature that the application explicitly requires.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Select Programs → Turn Windows features on or off.
  3. Enable the feature named in the application’s official requirements.
  4. Select OK and restart if prompted.

Do not enable random features to solve an unidentified DLL error.

System Restore, Reset, or a Windows reinstall should be reserved for broader system damage affecting multiple applications. Back up personal data first. These actions are not first-line repairs for an application-private ar.dll.

Frequently asked questions

Is ar.dll a Windows system file?

It is not established as a standard Windows component. It is a reused filename shipped by different applications.

Can I download ar.dll and paste it into System32?

No. Restore it through the application that installed it. Same-named DLLs are not automatically interchangeable.

Does ar.dll belong to Visual C++?

No reliable evidence establishes that identity. Install a Visual C++ package only when the affected application specifically requires it.

What if ar.dll exists but still will not load?

Check for a missing dependency, corrupted file, incompatible architecture, mismatched application release, or malware. Repair the owning application rather than replacing the file manually.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I run SFC and DISM first?

Only when multiple Windows components show problems. For an isolated application error, repair or reinstall the application first.

What information should I provide when asking for help?

Include the complete error text, executable name, full path where ar.dll was expected, application version, whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit, and whether antivirus quarantined the file.
