Those are historical 2024 settings, not the game’s latest stated configuration: the later v1.2 update changed long games to 9,999 turns. The official site also lists a v2.1 update announcement dated June 11, 2026, so the 1.0.5 change is best understood as one step in the game’s update history.
What did Ara: History Untold patch 1.0.5 change?
The patch notes, reproduced by the Ara community wiki, list these changes to game length:
| Setting | Before patch 1.0.5 | After patch 1.0.5 | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medium game | 750 turns | 800 turns | 50 turns |
| Long game | 1,250 turns | 1,500 turns | 250 turns |
These are turn limits from the patch notes, not estimates of how many hours a game takes. The notes described the update as part of ongoing responses to player feedback about pacing, balance, stability, and performance; they do not quantify a change in match duration or demonstrate a measured balance improvement.
How many turns is a medium game now?
The 800-turn medium setting was the value introduced in v1.0.5, not a confirmed current setting. The later v1.2 patch notes say the long-game setting became 9,999 turns, but the cited notes do not provide a revised medium-game limit. The available official update listings also do not establish platform-by-platform settings or live build numbers as of October 8, 2026. Check the game’s current in-game options for the setting available in your version.

What else came with patch 1.0.5?
The same patch notes describe changes to resources, city development, and starting conditions:
- More resource types would be visible at the start of a game, giving players additional strategic options.
- Smaller cities would generate less tax income and production, encouraging taller play.
- Larger cities would consume slightly more food, offsetting lower food maintenance on improvements.
- Starting cities and regions would be more likely to have fertile land or interesting nearby resources.
Together, these notes show that 1.0.5 was broader than a turn-count extension. They describe intended adjustments, rather than independently measured outcomes.
How the later updates changed the picture
| Update | Date or timing | Relevant changes |
|---|---|---|
| v1.0.5 | October 22, 2024 | Medium changed from 750 to 800 turns; long changed from 1,250 to 1,500, alongside city, resource, and starting-condition adjustments. The exact figures are reproduced in the community wiki’s patch notes. |
| v1.2, “Modder’s Paradise” | December 19, 2024 | The official v1.2 notes set the long-game option to 9,999 turns and also list mod.io integration, accelerated starts in Act II or Act III, performance work, and AI updates. |
| v2.1 | June 11, 2026 | The official announcement describes National Crafting Policies, 27 Culture Traits across six domains, seven religious verses, gameplay refinements, and stability and performance work. |
The official site lists the v2.1 announcement among its latest update news and says the free update is available on Steam. That announcement is evidence of the update’s stated availability, not proof of the current live build on every platform.
What v2.1 changed for managing a large empire
In the v2.1 announcement, Stardock CEO Brad Wardell said, “The biggest piece of feedback we got from Ara players was that managing crafting across a large empire took too long.” The announcement presents National Crafting Policies as a response: players can set crafting priorities for their nation and still override a policy for an individual city or crafter. The quote is Wardell’s description of player feedback, not an independently reported survey statistic.

Does the 1.0.5 change apply to an existing save?
The cited sources establish the new turn limits in the v1.0.5 notes, but do not say whether those limits applied to games already in progress. They do not establish save compatibility for that specific change, so they are not enough to answer yes or no.
