The Last Stand, a community-created update for Left 4 Dead 2, was officially released by Valve on September 24, 2020. The update itself was free for owners of the game; Valve also offered the base game for a limited free-play weekend at launch. That weekend was a 2020 promotion, not evidence that the game is currently free.
What was The Last Stand?
The Last Stand was a community-created update distributed as part of Left 4 Dead 2. Valve’s official update page credits members of the L4D2 Community Update Team, and the L4D Team described it as made “by the community, for the community” in its August 26, 2020 announcement: Coming Soon: The Last Stand.

Valve announced on September 17 that the update would ship on September 24, then recorded its release in the Steam announcement archive on September 24, 2020. The release announcement characterized it as more than 1,000 changes across the game; that figure is Valve’s own patch-note summary, not an independently measured count. What did the update add?
Valve’s official The Last Stand page lists new playable content alongside game-wide additions and fixes:

- Other additions: new animations, formerly unused dialogue, Counter-Strike: Source weapons officially implemented on all servers, Versus Survival on the main menu, L4D1 Common Infected models with gore, and the Rocketdude and Tank Run mutations.
- Refinements: PvP enhancements, UI improvements, and bug and exploit fixes.
The September 24 Steam notes also describe fixes involving gameplay, servers, animations, bugs, and exploits. They present the release as a broad update to the existing game, rather than a separate paid expansion.

Not permanently, based on the cited announcements. Valve’s September 17, 2020 post said the release would be accompanied by a free weekend, and the Steam release announcement said the game could be played free “this entire weekend.” That was a temporary promotion around the update’s launch, not a statement that the base game became permanently free.
