In ARC Raiders, hold the emote-wheel button, select Don’t Shoot, and release: press and hold G on PC, or hold D-pad Up on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. This plays a prerecorded voice line—not proximity chat—and it does not prevent another Raider from attacking.
How to use “Don’t Shoot”
- Hold the platform’s Emote input.
- Move the mouse or right stick over Don’t Shoot.
- Release the input to play the line.
The emote is a default option on the Raider emote wheel. It is available in the current live version; the latest located emote-specific official change was Live Update 1.36.0, which made wheel availability update while the wheel was open. See the official 1.36.0 notes.

Default controls
| Platform | Emote-wheel input | Selection |
|---|---|---|
| PC | G | Hold G, aim with the mouse, release |
| PS5 | D-pad Up | Hold D-pad Up, aim with the right stick, release |
| Xbox Series X|S | D-pad Up | Hold D-pad Up, aim with the right stick, release |
On consoles, tapping D-pad Up is the common mistake. Keep it held while selecting the emote.
Do not confuse the emote and ping wheels
ARC Raiders has separate communication controls:
| Function | PC | PS5 | Xbox |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raider emote wheel, including “Don’t Shoot” | G | D-pad Up | D-pad Up |
| Ping or squad-communication wheel | Middle mouse button | R1 | RB |
If “Don’t Shoot” is not visible, you have probably opened the ping or squad wheel. In particular, R1 on PS5 and RB on Xbox do not open the default Raider emote wheel. The distinction is also documented in this control and etiquette guide.

Change the emote wheel
From the lobby, open Raider → Customization → Emotes. There you can configure the contents and slots of the radial emote menu. Update 1.26.0 added a reset-to-default option, while Update 1.22.0 added wheel-slot indicators to emote tiles.
Changing the loadout does not change the button used to open the wheel. To verify or remap keyboard controls, use Settings → Controls; Embark’s button-remapping support documentation covers keyboard mappings.

“Don’t Shoot” is not proximity chat
The line is a prerecorded Raider voice-line emote. It does not require an active microphone. Proximity chat is a separate feature for speaking with Raiders outside your squad.

| Proximity voice chat | Hold B | Hold D-pad Down | Hold D-pad Down |
| Squad-only push-to-talk | Z | L1 + D-pad Down | LB + D-pad Down |
Other useful defaults include H for unarmed and K for the emote-loudness or ping-heard-by toggle. Going unarmed can make your peaceful intent easier to read, but it is not protection.

What the emote actually means
“Don’t Shoot” is best understood as a request: “I am asking not to fight.” It is not an enforced truce, alliance, safe state, or gameplay contract. The other player can still shoot immediately after hearing it.
The game’s design supports both spontaneous cooperation and PvP. Embark has described proximity chat and unexpected player-created interactions as central to the experience in developer comments reported by PC Gamer.

Practical etiquette for a peaceful encounter
- Signal early. Use the emote while there is still distance or cover between you and the other Raider.
- Make your posture readable. Holster your weapon or switch to unarmed, and avoid aiming at them.
- Do not rush their position. Sprinting directly into someone’s space can look hostile even if you have played the emote.
- Wait for confirmation. A reciprocal “Don’t Shoot” or a friendly voice response is a stronger signal than your emote alone.
- Clarify the arrangement. If you intend to share a room, loot area, or boss reward, communicate that before taking anything.
- Assume uncertainty if they do not respond. Lack of a reply is not consent to cooperate.
The most reliable nonverbal peace signal combines “Don’t Shoot,” an unarmed or holstered posture, movement away rather than toward the other player, and respect for their loot and space. Even then, treat the encounter as a judgment call rather than a guarantee.

Live Update 1.39.0, dated July 28, 2026, described a test in which only fights a squad starts affect its playstyle estimate. During that test, defending against a squad that damaged, downed, or knocked out a squadmate did not affect the estimate; third-partying an existing fight counted as starting one. The official 1.39.0 notes describe the matchmaking-telemetry change.
Best Value
- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
This does not make “Don’t Shoot” binding. It does not stop damage, protect an emoting player, or create an etiquette rule. It only concerns how certain PvP actions are counted for matchmaking.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes
- Using R1 or RB: those are the default ping or squad-communication controls, not the emote-wheel controls.
- Tapping D-pad Up: hold it, select the line, then release.
- Looking for a microphone command: “Don’t Shoot” is an emote voice line, not spoken proximity chat.
- Expecting immunity: the other Raider remains free to attack.
- Assuming the line was removed: check that you opened the Raider emote wheel and that “Don’t Shoot” is assigned in Raider → Customization → Emotes.
