The Grappling Hook gives ARC Raiders players another way to manage vertical movement: a recent hands-on report describes using its line to climb toward an attachment point, descend from it, or swing against it. But no reviewed source confirms that the hook cancels fall damage, or establishes a safe activation time or recovery window. Treat it as a traversal tool—not a guaranteed way to survive a fall—and practice on forgiving drops before relying on it in a dangerous situation.
What the Grappling Hook can—and cannot—be said to do
Embark Studios added the Grappling Hook in its Frozen Trail 2.0 update, which also introduced Pendola Pass. Those notes establish that the item is part of the update, but do not provide a grapple-specific procedure for avoiding fall damage or a sequence of controls to activate it. The official ARC Raiders site describes the game’s mechanics broadly; it does not establish a fall-damage technique for this gadget.

PC Gamer’s October 7, 2026 hands-on report, based on a preview session, describes the hook as a simulated rope. In that session, the attachment point mattered: the player could climb toward it, descend from it, or swing against it. The report also says the hook could be redeployed while airborne without a cooldown or use limit in the preview version covered. Those are useful observations about how the item behaved in that session, not official technical specifications or a guarantee about every live build.

The important distinction is between controlling movement and preventing damage. Being able to descend on a line does not prove that the game will treat a landing as safe. Neither the official update notes nor the hands-on report establishes a height threshold, timing window, particular anchor type, or repeat-use maneuver that reliably prevents damage. Until those details are confirmed for the current version, don’t treat any grapple maneuver as a fall-damage safeguard.

Choose an anchor for the route you want
Think about the attachment point first, then the movement you want from the line. The reported mechanics make the anchor central: depending on where it is and how you use the line, it may support movement toward the point, away from it, or in a swing. The sources do not specify which surfaces or objects accept the hook, so do not assume every visible ledge, beam, or structure is a valid anchor.
- To gain height: Look for a visible point that appears to support a route upward, then use the line to move toward it. The report describes climbing toward an attachment point; it does not document a universal rule for which points work.
- To descend: Consider whether the attachment point gives you a route down rather than requiring a direct drop. The report supports descending from an attachment, but does not say that this removes the damage associated with reaching the ground.
- To swing across: An attachment may let you swing against the line rather than simply travel straight toward it. Treat the landing area and your remaining route as part of the decision; the report does not promise a particular distance, trajectory, or landing outcome.
Before committing, ask whether the point helps with the next part of the route, not just the first few seconds of movement. A line that pulls you toward an awkward position may not be useful even if it gets you off the ground. The available sources do not identify specific routes on Pendola Pass or confirm anchor locations there, so use what you can see in your own match rather than relying on a named landmark as a guaranteed grapple point.

Plan a descent instead of improvising at the last moment
A controlled descent begins before you are already close to impact. From a position where you can still assess the route, identify a useful attachment point and consider where the line would take you. If you wait until a fall is nearly over, you may have too little time or clearance to judge whether the hook can help. That is conservative advice, not a claim about a confirmed minimum activation time: the reviewed sources establish no such timing window.

Notice the height change and the area where you expect to end up. Look for an attachment point that appears to support a route down or across, rather than assuming a direct drop is safe.
- Check the next landing or movement area. Consider whether the line would leave you with somewhere practical to continue. The available reporting does not specify landing rules or how terrain affects damage, so avoid treating an apparently manageable route as proven safe.
- Use the hook while you still have room to react. The preview report describes midair redeployment, but does not say how late it works. Preserve time and clearance rather than testing the limit near a lethal fall.
- Watch what actually happens in your current build. Note whether the point attaches and how the line changes your movement. Don’t infer from a successful attachment that the eventual landing will be damage-free.
Do not turn “I can descend on the rope” into “I can safely drop any distance.” Those are different claims. The first is supported by a hands-on observation; the second is not established by the sources covered here.

Keep a recovery option, but do not count on a last-second rescue
PC Gamer reported that the hook could be redeployed in midair without a cooldown or use limit in the preview session it covered. That behavior could make another attempt available after an initial movement, but it does not establish how much fall remains recoverable, whether every attempt will find an attachment, or whether a successful reattachment prevents damage. It also should not be assumed to describe the current live version without qualification.
If you want to learn how repeat use behaves, test it somewhere the consequences of failure are manageable. Pay attention to whether the hook actually attaches, how your movement changes, and whether you have room to continue reacting. Avoid deliberately testing the edge of a high fall in a situation where failure would cost you a run. A reported lack of cooldown is not the same thing as a guarantee that a second deployment will be available or useful in every circumstance.

When the route is uncertain, favor a plan that does not depend on a last-second input. A grapple may help manage movement, but the sources do not verify that a late redeployment can save a falling player. Keep enough space and time to respond, and be prepared for the possibility that the hook will not produce the outcome you want.
Practice in stages before trusting the hook near a dangerous drop
Because the reviewed sources do not give a safe height, timing threshold, or damage-cancellation method, practice should be about learning the current in-game behavior—not proving a universal trick. Choose a forgiving situation first, where a failed attempt is not likely to end your run. Then vary one thing at a time so you can tell what changed.

- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).

- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
- Confirm your current binding. The Frozen Trail 2.0 update notes mention updated default gamepad mapping, but do not give a Grappling Hook button sequence. Check the game’s current control settings and bindings for your platform and input device instead of relying on an assumed button.
- Try an attachment from a safe position. Use a visible point and observe whether it accepts the hook. The sources do not establish anchor compatibility rules, so regard what happens in your current build as the useful evidence for that point.
- Explore the reported movement options separately. Test movement toward an attachment, a descent, and a swing one at a time where conditions are forgiving. This helps you distinguish what the line is doing from what you hoped it would do.
- Observe the landing without treating it as a rule. If you take a fall, note the conditions and result, but don’t assume one outcome proves that the same height, timing, or anchor will always work. No verified fall-damage threshold is available here.
- Try midair redeployment cautiously. The preview account reports it, but the current version and the remaining recovery window are not established. Leave enough room to react and stop if the situation becomes risky.
This practice can help you understand the tool in your own version and settings. It cannot turn an undocumented interaction into a guaranteed safety procedure.
Use the game’s current controls rather than a guessed button
Embark’s update notes mention updated default gamepad mapping, but the reviewed material does not specify the Grappling Hook’s input sequence. Controls may also depend on your platform, device, or customized bindings. Open the game’s current settings and check your active controls before testing the item. If you changed bindings, verify the one assigned to the hook rather than assuming the default is still active.
This matters most when experimenting in motion: an incorrect button assumption can make it look as though the grapple failed or was unavailable. The update notes do not establish a universal input to publish as a reliable instruction, so consult the controls shown in your own game.
What the available evidence leaves unresolved
As of the October 7–8, 2026 reports discussed here, the practical picture is limited to the hook’s reported movement behavior and its addition in Frozen Trail 2.0. The reviewed sources do not settle the specific questions that matter most if you are trying to survive a fall:
- Whether the hook mitigates or prevents fall damage at all, and under what circumstances.
- How much fall distance, if any, must remain for a grapple or redeployment to help.
- Whether a particular anchor, movement direction, or landing condition changes the damage outcome.
- Which exact controls activate the hook across platforms and customized bindings.
- Which locations on Pendola Pass or elsewhere reliably accept an attachment.
That uncertainty does not make the hook useless: the hands-on report describes it as a flexible way to climb toward, descend from, or swing against an attachment. It does mean that players should separate traversal advice from claims about guaranteed survival. If a current update or clearly documented in-game test later establishes a specific fall-damage interaction, it can be evaluated on those terms; the sources available for this guide do not establish one.
